Anybody here skate? Or used to skate? Or collects skateboards?

I've seen a lot of action in the bmx thread. Figured there must be a few out there.

Used to skateboard 20+ years ago but gave it up to play guitar more. Didn’t get hurt as much when I was a teenager skating vs playing.

I was like "I'm Canuckistani. Of course I skate." Then I read your post. I skateboarded for about a year until I rolled my ankle really bad. Ended up on a mountain bike and never looked back. My brother was pretty into skateboarding though. He got pretty good.

Ray Barbee deck (I skated with him a dozen times when I was in high school, hometown hero)
    Hollow Independent trucks
    Bones Swiss bearings
    Santori cruiser wheels

Gotta slap the grip tape on and bolt through trucks up. This will be a sweet cruiser. If I can shake the clumsy old man feeling I might hit the park by my house.

A little bit, way back mid 80's. Early 80's dad ran a rink, did a lot of cool roller skate stuff back then. Damn epoxy floor was hard as hell! Still rock his skates to this day every now and then, then takes about two days to recover.Lol.

I skated in the 90s. I need to find some of my old boards to post pics of them. I have a cruiser here that I hop on from time to time and keep in my GTI just in case.

    20220108_163332.jpg

About 5 years ago I got into snowboarding and that kept making me itch to skate. This year I surfed for the first time, definitely going to do that again this Summer. The itch to skate is still there.

I mostly skated street. Ledges, gaps in parking lots, stairs, the occasional tree root made sidewalk bumps. There weren't many parks around until I got out of high school and by then I had very little interest in skating. Now I want to get my feet wet and maybe cruise the snake run of my local park once in a while.

Those are some of the wall boards. My gf hates them. Couple of those will be worth big bucks one day I do believe.

I used to actually be ok....now I'm old and worry about breaking my weak ass ankles (due to years of skateboarding/snowboarding)

My dad was a wood worker, so I had access to all the tools to make my own boards. I did a few pressed boards and dabbled in fibre glass. I’ll take a picture of my “fish” when I get home. Swiss bones ceramic bearings and Randal 180 downhill trucks

This is probably worth nothing but I hide it away like it is. It's a 50's Hawaiian surf skateboard. They made it in conjunction with union roller skates.....or at least that's what the writing has me believing. Found it on a construction site when I was a wee lad around 17. Had to fight my boss for it as he seen the joy it brought to my eyes when I found it and he stated "my construction site, my property"

It was more of a sidewalk surfer, so the trucks may be a tad loose haha learn how to carve! My son recently wanted to try it, so I kinda put him on there how I used to “teach” girls how to ride it. Our streets suck and to many wankers speeding, so I’ll have to find somewhere better to take him one day.

learn to carve, or else! I've always wanted to try a long board out but I'm old now. The loose truck thing is scary af. Speed wobble is the devil.

I used to skate when I was a kid. Actually skated for many years. Rode everywhere and everything we could find to grind, rail slide, or jump. My brother and I were like the kings of street ramps in our neighborhood. We were constantly building new ones and tweaking them to try to find that perfect transition. There was a group of about 10-15 of us in our neighborhood or close by our neighborhood that would ride together. Such good times. My first “real” board was a Simms Staab. Still have a Santa Cruz in my basement that I get out from time to time. I’m 45 now though- no more ramps for me!

I used to skate many many years ago, mainly just street/transportation (never had ramps or half pipe available) I just recently found my old Gullwing trucks (they're still intact) Currently I have a cab repro board that pick-up occasionally and a onewheel I take off road, my old man body isn't as limber as it used to be. I'm getting my son into it. As for collecting boards I have an old Powell board with with the skeleton half terminator, A Tony Hawk from one of the pro sater video games and a numbered Santa Cruz with the Avengers carving. Just last night I was looking at the Cutwater spirits site and they have a Devil's share whiskey board that I'm tempted on getting.

I skated and worked in a skateboard shop back in high school ('76-'79). We skated whatever pool we could find, some park in Modesto, Sierra Wave park in Sacramento, Lake Berryessa outflow pipe, bunch of pipes up in Arbuckle, pretty much anywhere we could find. Bunch of us even made a trip down to Upland once. Gave it all up when I graduated HS and got a "real" job. Lot's of good times back then.

Here's our shop business card. I drew the little skater guy.

I can’t and won’t bitch about gas prices, to busy running errands and shreddin!
I went and set a squirrel trap at the boys school, collected some eggs, got a killer samich and a interesting raspberry hibiscus ale from the samich joint close by, zero gallons per mile!!! 013ABD8F-DBDB-48F8-84D5-42FD6AE784E4.jpgCC9FFC28-EF87-4493-9399-A720D7815A0C.jpgA42B5EBB-65CB-41D7-B0FD-0A54E7003B3D.jpg

Was a skater for a long time... first board was a "Black Knight" with the clay wheels of death. The tiniest little pebble would send you flying.

    upload_2022-10-21_8-5-5.jpg

Urethane wheels came out about a year, and 45 layers of skin from my knees and elbows later... Cadillac wheels couldn't have had a better name, they felt so smooth!

Right when I started getting a little better was the first boom of the skatepark era so it was on!

Parks, drainage ditches, ramps... my buddy and I built the sketchiest ramp ever up against the garage door at my house, it was a sheet of plywood @ about a 35º angle, to a door at about 60º, to the garage door. We didn't know how to do transitions so there was no curve to it... "Clack, clack, clack" going up... "clunk, clunk, clunk" going down. If you managed to get up on the vertical garage door you had to duck your head as you made your kick turn to deep from hitting the eaves. Oh, did I mention the whole thing moved around when you hit it?

Started getting into pools a little, we had the Soul Bowl here, and used to see some of the rock stars there whose posters were on my wall. (I had a Logan Earth Ski just like that!)

I backed off the pools and stuff a little when I started surfing at 13, 'cuz the water is so much less painful when you fall, still skated just not as consumed by it. It was all about waves then.

Here's a cool story for ya'...

We used to skate the halls in my high school a lot - nice smooth concrete, ramps from level to level, no cars.
Me and a friend were skating there one night, stopped for a breather overlooking the pool, and suddenly noticed the fucking pool is EMPTY!! :goingcrazy::woot::yes::bananadance:

Went down and jumped the fence and in we went!

Now this is a pool for swim meets, water polo, and diving, so it's about as square, boring, and non-skateable as a pool could possibly be... except for the corner where the diving boards are.
The one wall under the high dive was like 18' deep and had the smoothest, most gradual and predictable transition I'd ever felt, going up to more vert than I'd ever seen!!
The transition was so smooth you couldn't even really tell when you hit the vert except for the weightless feeling when you went to kick turn. Higher than I'd ever been before and it was just so easy.
It was kinda' surreal, like in a dream when you're doing things you can't normally do. Came back a couple nights later and it was full again.

The diving board you can see in this picture is the low board, and just to the right of that is the high dive, so this is the wall we were hitting.

I still skate a little, but just kinda' surfy cruising on a carve board. I don't bounce like I used to, and I figure skating ramps and ditches at 60 years old is probably not very smart.
