Anybody annoyed by their exhaust?

Hello all, in the market for a 2020/21 Tundra Crew Max Limited TRD or TRD Pro. Prefer the TRD Pro but I’ve heard the exhaust can drone and get annoying on trips. We’re planning on using the truck to tow with, and for road trips so naturally that’s a concern. Wife wouldn’t be too pumped about it. Anybody get the drone? Anybody get annoyed by the sound after a while in the truck? Lastly, anyone add/trade an aftermarket exhaust/Factory standard exhaust to quiet things down a bit?

    Thank you

I’m only annoyed that I can’t hear the melodious TRD burble as I close my eyes to sleep at night. :) I’m truly never annoyed by my TRD exhaust, and I tow heavy for hours at a time over the summer and I can’t get enough of hearing it. It does not interfere with conversation or listening to music etc. and no drone issues. In the past I had a Carven catback, flowmasters, magnaflow etc and those droned and were annoying. Only other system I liked with no drone was my Corsa sport.

    Welcome!

@Green Thunder swapped out his Pro exhaust for the standard Tundra exhaust. I think he said the drone was getting to him while towing, he could probably explain it a little more.

My Pro’s exhaust is way quieter than the aftermarket I had on my previous non pro tundra - inside…. Outside the Pro’s exhaust is mild but amazing sounding at the same time.

    Curse you Perry the Platypus!
I got the TRD "Pro" exhaust on my 2010 and have zero regrets. Of all the aftermarket exhausts I've owned, it is my favorite and I would say it has no drone. Not to be rude but people that say it drones and find it annoying should probably stick with stock. It livens up the driving experience and I bet your wife will like it as well.

Another option is the Dirty Deeds exhaust. I've had their 10" exhaust for years and absolutely love it. It's similar in sound to the TRD Pro. There is a resonator that is provided to eliminate any drone there may be while towing, but I haven't used it the last couple years I've been towing. Our family of 5 loves the sound! They are extremely popular on this forum and Keith is very helpful in matching an exhaust to your needs. @dirtydeeds

I've had several exhausts on my Tundras over the years, and TRD pro was my favorite sound by far. I towed often and it never bothered my wife at all. I loved it. I currently don't have it on my new Tundra, but look on marketplace daily for a good deal, because for sure I will put it on again on my 21.

For all the times you hate the drone, you have just as many times you wish it was straight pipe to blow by driver in your way. Can’t have both but you learn to appreciate whatever system you pick. I went stainless works legend series and it’s a nice note and look. Just find a good installer that knows how to do it

Yes, I yanked my exhaust after getting sick of the drone. The resonance was horrible in the cab, especially when I was towing. It wasn’t a problem for everyday driving. I did love the sound, especially thru tunnels. It became irritating on long drives without our trailer but was especially bad when I was hauling a mountain pass and needed more throttle.

I picked up a stock system off OfferUp for cheap and have never looked back. Truck pulls a bit better in the lower RPMs too. Think I’m getting more umph from the increased back pressure.

As you can see, we all have different experiences. I wouldn’t let the exhaust detract you from the Pro. Give it a try and see how it goes.

I love the sound of my TRD dual exhaust! I have towed twice with trips over 5,000 miles each and totally enjoy the sound.

People report the “helicopter drone” a lot with the TRD which to me is just the sound waves hitting unequally since they’re true separate duals. It’s been said adding an equalizer pipe (H or X) gets rid of the helicopter sound. I’ve had drone before, and really don’t feel that the TRD drones. It’s all subjective for sure!

Mine had a drone to it for about the first 10-15,000 miles. Especially around 50 mph, now I can hardly hear it unless I step on it. When I am towing, it is louder, but I wouldn't call it annoying. Towing my boat up hills, you will hear it, but my wife has never complained about it.

    ^ This is the answer..
Bolts right into existing OEM pipes.

    I've had 3 @dirtydeeds BAM systems, 8", 10", 12"..
I'll say the 10" with the resonator is the sweet spot..
Although if you tow a lot Keith would probably recommend the 12".

    I currently have a 12 but I'm going back to a 10.
I don't tow and I found I prefer the sound of the 10".
It arrived yesterday and I'll swap them Sunday, I hope.

Keith at Dirty Deeds offers some of the best customer service I've ever encountered..

If one already had TRD duals, he makes BAMs for that as well.
Or you could get a single-out BAM and buy a new single-out OEM tailpipe..

Give Keith a call, he is easy to talk to and deal with..

I’ll keep you posted if it comes to
Great info. Thanks man. Really like the TRD Pro, wish it had the foo foo straight nonsense parking censors. But the interior and other additions are attractive.

Pretty straight forward replacing the exhaust or did you have a shop do it?

It looks pretty easy. Depending on the state of the bolts, it might be difficult to remove in your driveway. I paid a local shop to install it for me instead of wasting a weekend afternoon under the truck smashing my knuckles.

I just put my Pro exhaust on a month ago and love it. It's certainly louder than the stock exhaust, but I like that. I'm not the only one that has the stock/single exhaust sitting in the garage, waiting to sell, you can find them relatively cheap on FB marketplace. I'll be happy to get $100 for mine, w/ only 14k miles on it.

It's going to take me less than 10 minutes to swap my BAM..
Pull 4 bolts, remove the tail clamp, work the hangers off the rubber and replace..

But as @Green Thunder stated, might want to put some WD40 or penetrating oil on the bolts couple of days before if they've been on a while..

It's going to sound awesome when you're in the mood, but yes it will drone. I have the standard exhaust and even it droned at 1200-1500 rpm, you could feel it vibrate the cab. I put the dirt deeds resonator on it and it went away. It annoyed me but I'm sensitive.

Exhaust on the Pros is throaty. Seems like people either like it or they don't. My '21 Pro doesn't bother me at all, and the wife said it doesn't bother her either. With that being said, the exhaust note on a Limited or SR5 is much quieter and definitely not as throaty. Unless you're looking for the off road capabilities, suspension upgrade, more articulation, increased ride height, etc. of the Pro you may lean more toward a Limited; otherwise your gonna spend money changing things on the Pro to make it more pleasant and stable while towing.

    I'm sensitive as well..

I had a Magnaflow that had the drone from hell before I knew about @dirtydeeds
I then found this forum and Keith.
I called Keith and he suggested trying his resonator with the Magnaflow so I purchased one.
It killed the drone but made the Magnaflow sound stock.

I then bought his 8 and ran it for 2 years, it was a tad raspy and loud for this old man.
Keith swapped it for a 10 and it was sweet.
Thieves cut my 10 when they stole my cats 2 years ago, so I swapped the damaged 10 for 12.
I miss the 10, which has a deeper tone (to me) and a little less 1.5K to 2K drone.
The drone isn't that bad, probably no more than stock, but I did prefer the sound of the 10".

If one does tow a lot, I'd recommend Keith's 12 with the longer resonator.
We tried that on mine, it did reduce the small amount of midrange drone I had, but it made the exhaust sound stock.
Even that drone was minimal, only heard it around 45 to 55mph, slower or faster didn't hear any drone at all.
I'd dare say most of y'all wouldn't even notice it, my wife didn't but I did.
So I put the shorter resonator back on and ordered the 10".

He makes custom systems to whatever one wants and needs, 8, 10, 12 ,14 ,18, etc.
That's why the best way to see what that is, is to give him a call..

Did you tow at all when you had the 12"? I have the 10" and it's great around town, but I somewhat-frequently tow and it gets a little overbearing on longer trips under load. I feel like an old man, but I'm considering finding someone with a 12" to swap if they want something a bit louder. What ultimately made you change from the 12"?

Edit: Looks like you already answered this question, I just needed to read a little further!

    see sig for mods.....
The PRO exhaust can be a bit annoying with the helicopter like drone early on. By 5-10K it had lessened, and 20 had mellowed and felt more balanced. At 78K miles it now seems almost too quiet. So NO I don't find it annoying, not after 5-10K

Borla pro xs muffler and X-pipe and no rear cats (voluntarily). Droned like crazy with a stock exhaust exhaust and tip. Put on a bit longer tip and cut the drone in half. Put on a dirty deeds resonator and it stopped the rest to the point I’m debating getting a different muffler it’s so quiet inside. Sounds so nice outside though.
