I have several passions in life...besides my Tundra. I hunt and fish, and I love scuba diving! I help teach scuba at my local dive shop, and also go on some awesome trips! We are going to Fiji in November for 13 days. I will be doing one of the premier shark dives in the world there. 14' Tiger and Bull sharks are common.
My favorite place to go is Roatan...I have a trip planned for April 21-28, with a few openings left in our group. Anyone care to join us? We have one over water room left.
I also dive in SC, in the Cooper River...murky, dark, strong current, log jams, and gators! Why would anyone want to do this...Megaladon shark teeth on the bottom...there for the taking! Last trip, I got a 6 1/4" tooth, as well as a 6000 year old carving of a flounder. I brought up well over 100 teeth in a week. I also had a gator bump into me in the current on the bottom. All worth the 10 hour drive and all the bad conditions we endure.

Yes. Used to be an instructor for both NAUI and SDI/TDI. Also certified on closed circuit rebreathers. Super fun.

We’ve done Roatan. Amazing island. The drift dives were epic. Favorite spot is South Pacific. Fiji, Truk, Marshall Islands, Yap. All amazing.

I am PADI certified but have not got wet in years. I preferred fresh water and just hanging out in shallower water checking out the bass, bluegill, pike, etc and looking for crap (never found any Megaladon teeth or anything cool like that however :)) . Did Lake Michigan a couple of times.

Not yet, but I really want to get my certification. A friend of mine on the west coast of BC has been bugging me to join him on some dives. I'd really prefer to do my course in a tropical location. Mainly because I'd need a reason to go to a tropical location. LOL.

Any suggestions on the best place to do that? Thinking DR, Bermuda, Bahama come on pretty mamma...?

I actually first certified in 1975 with the long defunct NASDS. PADI absorbed NASDS certs.

Seriously though I would love to learn to scuba. Been interested for years but never followed through for some reason.

I used to occasionally train with the sheriff’s dive team. Owner of the shop where I taught volunteered with the LA County guys. Thanks for doing what you do since, it’s been my experience, you’re not usually going out to rescue...

If you learn to dive in cold, dark BC, you’ll be able to dive anywhere in the world without issue.

I learned in the quarries here in PA....cold, dark, not much to see...but still better than going to the mall!

Generally, the good islands for diving are not known for beaches. The best places to dive are walls and reefs...which usually translates to rocky shores and beaches loaded with coral rubble.
Some of my favorites are Roatan, Utila, Curacao, Cozumel, and Cayman Brac. You can do your classroom and pool stuff at home before you go, and do your open water dives when you get to the island.

Thanks for your service! I know the training that goes into this. I did it for a while, but the team in my area was loaded with politics and drama...not my thing. Everyone wanted to be in charge and there was a lot of whining.
I have helped to certify a lot of rescue/recovery divers.

I took diving as an elective at Umpqua Comm College in Oregon. Our open water quals were in late fall. One in the Umpqua River near campus. The other was in a lake over on the coast. Cold, dreary, rainy day. As part of the qual we all had to hit 30 ft and a couple other things. The lake bed was 33 ft. Not dark but very poor visibility. Freaking cold. Diving in 80* water in the Philippines was a lot more fun.

I haven't been diving lately but i started at 10 years old. I love spearfishing and catching lobsters. I have done countless dives off the east coast of florida out of Sebastian Inlet spearing fish and catching lobsters. I have also dove in the florida keys, Bahamas, and spent a week in Roatan off Honduras.

I used to dive every Thursday night with a group of nuts like myself. The worst was an evening where the air was 17 and the water was 38. Our gloves froze fast to the handrail as soon as we grabbed it. Drysuits were frozen stiff by the time we walked to our vehicles to remove our gear! My body doesn't do well in those water temps any more.

I love spearing Lionfish...helps the reef, plus they are one of the best eating fish I've had. Just stay away from those spines!

Yeah, that sounds pretty cold. Real cold....Our instructor at UCC was kind of hard corps. Name was Mike Maynard. Owned a dive shop in Roseburg, Oregon for a while. Ex Navy underwater demolitions diver. Pretty cool guy. Sold the store, bought a big boat and went to Belize to do dive tours. I haven't gone diving in years but highly recommend it. Lots of fun and you meet adventurous folks.

I learned while I was stationed in Guam back in the '80's. Great place to dive. Did a fair amount of diving up until I moved to AZ. I should start back up again since CA is just down the road.

There is a little of politics in our company too. Mainly the guys that want to end the dive team because they think it is not "needed" but we have a really good Dive Captain and he gets us grants and such. We still have a few that need to go threw rescue diver. It seems hard to find a good reliable instructor.

When we have to do our deep dives we go to Lake Rawlings in VA. Have you been there?

Good to know. I can't stand beaches anyways. Fuckin' sand everywhere... I'll look into some of those places you mentioned and see if I can convince my woman to make a trip. Thanks! :)

Never been there. We can get to 100' in one of the quarries we dive. It is the main dive quarry around our area, so it does get to be a bit crowded.
