About 2 weeks ago the laptop (which I own) @ our church went belly up. Wife told me "Well, we can use my old one @ church; I'll take your old one; and you can go buy that MacBook you've been wanting."

Just like being told "You can leave early" in the military, you don't hang around when your significant other says something like that. So I went on post (where I work) and picked up a MacBook Air M2. Previous laptop (which I still own) is a Lenovo Thinkpad T480s with a Core i5, 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD. I didn't think it was slow.

UNTIL I completed the same tasks on the new MBA M2. It's so fast it's almost stupid. And that's considering it's only got 8GB of RAM.

    Any other Mac fanboys/fangirls?

I bought a MacBook Air M1 this summer and maxed out the RAM on it. It's my first Mac since 2005 and I'm digging it. I went back to an iPhone earlier this year so I was looking forward to being able to air drop files back and forth.

I bought my previous MacBook Pro in 2015 and just upgraded a month ago to a 16" M1 MacBook Pro. It hauls ass and I love that they put the camera card port back on them.

Looking at upgrading our old 27" iMac next.

I am a huge mac fan myself, I use mac for editing my photos and videos. First macbook pro was bought in 2012 and still rocking it now, I did buy another MAC MINI M1 chip last year.
Thing for me is MACs doesn't slow down over time where PC just starts to take a dump in two or three years I can't explain why.

11 years on mac...and I'll never go back. The Apple silicone is just silly with battery life and performance. Small videos I produce for work use to take 40ish minutes to export. Last night it took about 2 minutes. And that's switching from a macbook pro with an i7 and 32gbs of ram to an M1 macbook pro.

Yeah, I didn't realize how much I'd appreciate that feature.

I actually did not max out the RAM on mine. Honestly, I 'just' use mine for surfing, research, some very basic video editing and desktop publishing, etc. Bought the 8GB RAM/512GB SSD version and was a bit concerned it might be slow...and I was wrong. It beats the living crap out of my 'old' laptop. LOL

I bought the M2 version, honestly, for one main reason - MagSafe. I LOVE that they brought it back.

Yeah, both the speed and the battery life are insane. I've been tracking my battery life off charger; so far I've used it for about 14 hours, and I still have like 32% left. With my old laptop I'd be ecstatic if I got 4 hours, and it was an ultrabook.

My 2015 Mac has served me well through school and I haven't dabbled into the newer lineup of Macs yet. It would seem I'm due for an upgrade.

I mean, it's not like older Macs are crap. They're not at all. It's just that the new Apple silicon chips are *THAT* much faster.

My work laptop has 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD, with a Core i7. GeekBench says the score is about 1300 single-core, 4796 multi-core.

MacBook Air M2 has a score of about 2000 single-core, 8900 multi-core - AND battery life of between 14-18 hours, depending on what I'm doing.

This thread peaked my curiosity so I went ahead and watched some reviews and they seem to surpass my current model in every way. The battery life on my current mac book has gotten so bad it essentially stays plugged into my charger.

    Vista..... Me anyone? lol
I custom build my own PC, and laptops are whatever I used at work and have at home, plenty in the past life, not necessary a Mac fan, but just have a MBP 16 M1 because, eh, my dad got one and didn't like it so he dumped on me.....
Work: T480 (can't complain, it is what it is)
Home: Custom build PC (AMD Threadripper, 64G RAM, can't remember how much storage but I maxed out on the SATA connectors and M.2 as well, but I think around 17T with another 15T external and 20T backup) Surface Pro 3 (sitting on the shelf due to MBP in the picture), two kids Chromebook for school and MBP 2012? There are more that got destroyed and I can't remember what it is.....lol
I will agree, the M silicone are real good and works wonderfully with the Apple system, as they should.

Yea - it’s one of those things that once you get the green light - just do it and don’t look back (even if it means your probably only getting the ok because your SO has a potential motive - i/e they have a big purchase of their own already lined up or sitting in the closet).

I’m not a “fan boy” so much as a fan of things that just work. Owned Max booked since the 2400 came out - loved having a lightweight laptop (for the time) and wound up buying a 3400 as my primary user in place of a desktop. Aside from a blue g3 tower - I’ve been using laptops ever since.

My 2011 MacBook Pro (a gift from insurance - someone stole my old MacBook G3 and insurance paid to replace in 2011) finally crapped out early this year - so I bought a new low end MacBook - still 100x better than what I had and I think it was like $899 as a refurbished unit. It will probably serve me well until retirement. Figure I’m due a new one then - as well as a new truck.

Con has always been Mac , from the "Johny 5" version desk top to the newer lap top....

She has her own Graphic Design company and that Mac is our only other employee :hattip:

Now for her full time "Gig" she needs our PC and the two screens but we only use HP products for that and my lap top...:anonymous:

If I couldn't cuss and walk away from a PC , I would never get anything done :p:p:p:p

Yeah, we're pretty much on the same page. That's why I own an iPhone - it's not because I don't like Android, because I do. But I like *KNOWING* my phone will just f'n work, time and time again, above all else.

I'd have spent as much $ as I could on what I *wanted* - which as a nerd is a fully spec'd out laptop - but honestly? I browse, do very light editing of photos/videos, listen to music, etc. This'll be good for that for literally a decade if I wanted it to be.

My guess is that I'll gift this to my son once he heads off to the military/college, and then I'll buy *the big one.*. LOL

Damn - MacBook Pro with an M1 Max and 64GB RAM? That must have been some serious $.

I'll admit I 'cheated' out on this one because it's my first MacBook though not my first Mac...but whenever I buy my next one? I'll likely spec it out with as much RAM/storage as I can, and hold on to it for as long as I can.

ME was a steaming pile of crap - and I say that in relation to Vista (which was also.)

Although from what I understand, ME had an obvious reason - if I'm not mistaken, they wanted to sort of rush a 'consumer' OS to market as a successor to 98SE, and they rushed it *so* fast that it sort of didn't go through the normal QA/QC processes.

Only OS I've ever installed that BSOD'd literally the very first time it booted to the desktop after a clean install. LOL

My macs remain usable for 6 years. I still run after that but do not depend on them. I do a lot of video. Storage I don’t care much about. Its all about speed. I do mostly cloud based storage.

Well yeah - again, I'm not trying to say old(er) Macs are crap, not at all....but it is somewhat hard to overstate what a paradigm shift the ARM processor technology underpinning Apple silicon is. I'm not being hyperbolic at all when I say it's entirely possible and probable that the shift to Apple ARM silicon may do for laptops in general what the iPhone originally did for smart phones back in 2007 or so.

Understood; I don't need tons of storage - just enough for my purposes - but speed is a lot more important.

And agreed on the 6 years; I was once told - and it's held true for the 30 or so years I've used PCs/Macs - that 7-8 years is about the usable lifetime of a computer.

LOL! Yeah, Vista drove a ton of people towards Macs - I was one of them. It's not like I've not owned any PCs after that, but I've owned 3 Macs in my life - a Core 2 Duo Mac mini from 2006, a 27" Core i7 iMac from 2011 or so, and this MBA M2.

They all still work just fine. Mac mini is quite slow, but the hell of it is that it's STILL faster than some computers that are a decade faster. LOL

I wish I could say the same. Believe me, I've tried any # of them - Samsung Captivate, HTC One M8, Samsung S8, Samsung S10, Samsung S10e, Samsung S20 (I think it was), Google Pixel (5, I think?), and a few others.

Every one of them have had both software *and* hardware issues - and I'm super easy on my stuff. And even then, it's not the biggest deal; that's what warranty support is for. Hardware support hasn't been a big deal.

Software, on the other hand, has been a sh*tshow. The carrier, the manufacturer of the hardware, and the manufacturer of the OS essentially send me on a goose chase EVERY time.

At least with Apple, you call the same company for everything but obvious carrier issues (e.g., unlock the phone, change carrier plan, etc.)

The arguments that Apple users always repeat are silly to me.
Crazy. I've owned a very long line of Google and Samsung phones and have never had a single issue to speak of. Wonder how our experiences could be so polarizingly different.

Believe me, I know them - all of them. LOL. In my case, it's much more pragmatic, as outlined above. Had I had the same issues with iPhones/Macs, I'd stay far the hell away from them, like I do with Dells in general.

And for the record, I'm not a sole 'Apple user.' (Not that I think you were saying that.) I own and will continue to own Windows laptops for various things. I'm also a big fan of Linux.

I've wondered that myself. I know people who have had nothing but problems with every single iPhone they've owned. I know - or used to know - a girl with an *actual* magnetic personality. I told her husband (who I worked with in the Navy) he was full of sh*t - until he demonstrated it. Literally anything electronic she stood near would go haywire within 10 minutes or so. Monitor? It'd start to do that degaussing thing. Cell phones/computers? They'd BSOD or reboot. Microwaves? They'd shut off/shut down and flat not work, or circuit boards would blow up. I'm not kidding in the least. It was the single weirdest thing I've ever seen.

In my case I think it's just sh*t luck, as my Dad used to say. *shrug*
