Any consensus on AGM batteries for our non-hybrid Start/Stop Trucks?

    I off road and camp often and previously on my Tacoma I ran a Group 31 X2 AGM with 110ah and 220 minutes of reserve power. It worked great to power lights and my fridge, plus a cost/weight savings vs a dual battery set up. I ran my Tacoma for years with it and never once ran the battery down.

    Scanning the 3rd Gen threads it doesn’t seem anyone has a group size figured out yet, just curious if anyone knows and has dropped in some sort of AGM like Optima or an X2?

    Do start/stop engines require a particular battery?

    Also keeping an eye out for AGM battery replacement options. https://www.tundras.com/threads/replace-battery-for-agm-odyssey-part.117505/#post-3020931 In the past with other Toyotas I have used Sears Diehard Platinum (old school); Optima red and yellow top deep cycle, past several trucks I have used Odyssey very happy with them. I have not yet heard about X2 looks good in the pic. Keep us posted OP when you find a new AGM with the right size to fit our trucks!

    I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
    Why is figuring out the right size so hard?

    I determined this on my 2007 with a tape measure….

    The battery is: L” X W” X H” . Find one that matches and has the correct terminal orientation and equal or more cranking and cold cranking amps.

    Or take the same measurements of how much room you have in the battery area and match that up with the biggest battery you can cram in that space. This is the correct way. No one has ever complained about “too many” cold cranking amps and deep cycle capacity on a -30F morning when they need the truck to start.

    I have a 12 year old AGM in my 2007 and it still fires on the first attempt in -30 temps. I put the biggest AGM I could readily find on the battery tray, got some extensions for the terminal clamps and so far have lived happily ever after.

    Very true, which is part of my question. The other part is auto start. In the other thread they talk about the battery tech and what I don’t know is if it’s anything special or something just fine for a deep cycle AGM to handle.

    Most if not all stop/starts utilize enhanced flooded batteries. EFBs. Not as good as AGM but not bad at all. EFBs are designed to withstand frequent load demand with start/stop. Definitely worth considering.

    So then, in theory, an AGM should be fine? For my use case I want tons of reserve power which a larger battery provides, and and AGM can withstand frequent larger withdrawals of power and bounce back better than standard lead acid batteries.

    Here we are again @PapaDave418 , Ive also been researching this for a while and last time I called the dealership they had no clue what I was talking about or what group/size the stock battery is "Its not in the system".
    The only info I have found to date is that XOverland was able to fit a group 31 in their Tundra.

    I did have an X2 27f for years in my 4runner and it never let me down, it powered my fridge for 4 days with no charge.

    Not a cheap alternative. That battery is about 1k and then the controller.

    Haha, well I didn’t want to call it out. Hopefully it’s secured or off road it will hop around like a Mexican jumping bean. Have you ever seen a Mexican jumping bean in person, it’s real and kinda cool!

    Its in the build video and its on their website "build sheet" stating they used a group 31 but no other details. Looks like they used a ratchet strap to secure it

    I tend to do alot of research. For gen 2.5, i went with the Odysssey 31 AGM battery.

    It had a special fuse/fuse structure that went with it to make sure the battery fully charged.

    For Gen 3...I'd assume the same. Its a matter of what fits and seeing if that fuse works with it.

    Now onto the Hybrid scenario.

    In the meantime, anyone in the market for a Brand New Odyssey Extreme AGM31 battery? Still new in the box...

    The LiFePO4’s i put in my travel trailer have been far better than the lead acid batteries ever were. Their voltage curve is very flat and so they tend to maintain output much better. You could tell the LA batteries being run down through the weekend because the heater would sound weaker and weaker. The LiFePO4 runs the same all weekend. Also the ability to store it inside out of the cold helps a lot

    Most LiFeP04 batteries are not used as a starter battery but some companies, like Dakota Lithium , make dual purpose Lithium batteries.

    No, although I think maybe Battleborn is making a line of starter LiFePO4's now.

    Still, the LFP's are so light compared to a comparable AGM/Lead Acid that you could probably keep a standard size battery for starting and run a small LiFe and get the same useable power. I switched from dual group 24 deep cycle's which game me about 100 ah(probably generous) usable capacity to a single 170 ah renogy LFP that gives me 120 ah(keeping it between 20 and 90% state of charge) and its 1/2 the weight. I think it was 90 lbs for the 24's and 45 lbs for the 170 ah LFP. Since then I found two more of the 170 ah batteries for cheap on ebay and am running 510 ah total. I can run the air conditioner in my trailer off a 3000 watt inverter :rofl:

    A group 31 AGM is like 80 lbs for 100 ah, but I believe thats really about 50 or 60 ah usable if you are trying to prevent overdischarging the battery.

    X2 Power FTW!! The X2 battery for hybrid and non hybrid is the 12V 94R AGM DUAL X2 48 SLI94RAGMDP. I couldn't believe my Hybrid came with a liquid filled battery and not AGM???!!!

    Local service advisor was telling me that if you want to cram more power in, you can also go with the 27F. The 27F runs about 100 more CCA for those that need it. Same footprint, but the 27F is ~1" taller because it doesn't have recessed terminals like the 94R.
    I'll be on 2 years with my OE battery this fall. I'll probably preemptively swap it out for a X2 before our winter road trip.
