I have read a hundred threads about regearing and revisiting the idea again. I have 21 TRD Pro with no lift, narrow and heavy 35's. Truck has 2650 Magnuson on a conservative tune.

6-12 months ago when I was reading heavily on regearing, I remember the consensus was 5.29's or bust. Even the forum famous Dirty Deeds was saying I should run 5.29's with my setup. Now I'm seeing some info suggesting 4.88 because of the supercharger. Apparently Dirty Deeds was suggesting this at one point.

i drive primarily on the road. Mountain Roads and Highway. Not really any offroad and some snow driving when we go up to Lake Tahoe.

Sorry to bring this topic up again, but I am just wondering if 4.30 to 4.88 is really going to make a huge difference in feel. I'm not drag racing but I just want better response and less of that "towing a whale" feeling during daily driving.

Even the local trusted gear shop is suggesting 4.88 for my application. Also going to do a Grip Pro diff while in there.

    What say the brain trust?

There’s zero reason to run 4.88 when 5.29 exists and you have 35’s. I don’t ever remember saying you’d want 4.88 because of a supercharger, if I did I was dead wrong.

drag racing or not, the biggest difference is felt when cruising at steady speed. Literally 99.9% of the time they’re giving you maximum benefit. When drag racing they’re benefiting you the least amount.

if your gear shop gives you any kinda attitude about you not wasting your money on 4.88, but instead running the correct gear: 5.29…. You should find another gear shop.

Thanks for the clarification. The information I gleaned was admittedly second hand, but certainly threw me for a loop. I remember you being a very strong advocate for 5.29's.

Shame you are so far away. I do not have a dedicated gear shop, as it has been decades since I had a need to regear anything. They all seem to have their own loyalties to specific brands and often contradict each other with such conviction. For instance, I spoke with 3 shops and they claim the gear sets they choose to install are because the other brands all have failures. This is why it is so difficult for me to choose any shop to work on any vehicle I own. For that reason, no one but me works on any of the cars, trucks, and motorcycles in my household.

That said, I have no interest taking on that project and I would most likely screw it up, lol. It's also why I keep putting this off. Trust issues...

If a shop has a trusted gear set that would make me feel better than a shop that is agnostic. Tells me they like that gear, trust that gear, and knows how to set that gear up.

    And absolutely do 5.29’s.
