After reading through all the MPG threads prior to my purchase I wasn't quite sure what to expect. This was the first real test for me here this morning, non-hybrid DC truck with OR packages has 120 miles on the ODO.

This for a drive of about 30 miles, unloaded, with some interstate, some country back roads, some suburbs. Normal drive mode, gentle driving. Speeds up to 70 on the interstate, then 50s on country roads and 30s in the burbs. Only a few stop signs and traffic lights. Temp in mid 30s, rainy, engine dead cold at the beginning. Being brand new and running on winter gas I was prepared for the worst. It took maybe 5 miles to get out of single digits as the engine warmed up but by the end the result was better than I expected. This is already better than my 2nd Gen Tacoma. I know, this is just the guess-o-meter and will need to be hand calculated over a full tank. But this was reassuring to me at least that I did not make a colossal mistake and buy a 13 MPG gasoline disappearing machine.

That would have been a 20 something with temps in 60's.

Indeed. I think it would have even been 20 something today if the drive were 5 or 10 miles longer to amortize the warm up penalty.

I've got 23k miles on mine and it seems mine is still breaking in. In the last month or so, I'm starting to see highway MPG hitting 22-23, something I hadn't see prior. Overall mpg went from low 17's to low 18's in the last couple tanks. What you're seeing on yours is a great start.

In the dozens of hand calculated mpg's that I've done, the '22 computer has been within 0.2 of it (sometimes right on the money), which is what has surprised me the most. My '14 was never this consistently accurate. Stock sized tires for both.

I am now about half way through my first tank and the overall computer avg is showing 17.5 MPG. Some highway, some grocery store runs, etc. I am pleased to see that on a first tank and on winter gas.

Honestly this is not “class leading” like the Toyota claims stated. Suprisingly, I recent took a 500 mile trip with a F-150 with the Police Package 3.5 twin turbo Ecoboost. Admittedly, I HATE anything FORD and I’m a huge Toyota fanboy. But I will admit I was suprised after the trip was all said and done. Mileage was a 60/40 split (Highway/ City) mix, and it averaged 22.7 MPG. And it hauled some serious ashe (minus the normal turbo lag). Mileage might have been better, but I was gassing it alot trying to gauge how quick it was off the line.

Seeing stuff like this makes me wonder/ realize why so many 2022 Tundra models are coming up on the used market with less than 1,000 miles (Given the faulty turbo issues). I think Toyota missed the mark on this one, which pains me to say cause I love me some yoda. Granted this Yoda hasn’t been broken in yet. But to be fair, that F-150 I drove was a 4WD with only 3,000 miles; so it wasn’t broken in either.

But I would rather be caught dead in a Yoda, then ever be seen alive driving a Ford. Which makes making these statements/ obervations even more painful to say.

Flippers are a lot of that

Turbo issues are very minimal at this point

My metric on this is not relative to the class as I will never have a chance to thoroughly evaluate all of them. And like IRQ I wouldn't be caught dead driving most of them anyway. But for the Tundra to achieve similar or better MPG than my 4th Gen Tacoma while having so much more comfort, capability and safety makes it worthwhile. And Toyota stuff is so much better quality. I am close to selling my beloved 2009 Tacoma and I am actually having some buyer's remorse for the Tundra. I love that thing so much.

I know this may not be a popular opinion in truck circles but I really wish Yota would make a plug-in hybrid platform, maybe in the next Tacoma using something like the RAV 4 prime drivetrain (that has like 305 combined HP) but maybe with the next Tacoma's turbo engine instead of the NA RAV 4 banger, alongside the motors and battery. That would be sweet, and make a lot more sense than making 1 mile grocery runs in our ICE vehicles where the warm up penalty just destroys MPG. The RAV will go 40 miles on battery, then operate as a normal full hybrid. I would love to have my truck do that. And get maybe close to 30 MPG in the process.

The flipping is about over or will be soon. Dealers are letting these go at MSRP now. I believe that I probably could have bargained mine down a bit from there if I had really wanted to be a pain. They came down from a $2500 markup to MSRP without any resistance. And the turbo/wastegate issue seems to be resolved, I would guess. That is one thing that had put me off for a year.

I don't, but when you can have only one vehicle, it has to do everything.

But I may supplement my "fleet" with an EV or hybrid SUV for the light duty stuff when the time is right. But for now, the Tundra also gets groceries.

Is something wrong with my 2023 limited? I bought mine new with dealer installed 35’s and a leveling kit. The best MPG I managed to achieve by resetting trip meter at fill up and then dividing at the next fill up was 15.7 or so. That was all highway miles. When I do mix city and highway, I’m around 14mpg.

3” lift kit, 35’s, WW flares, tonneau etc.
Toyo’s? 12.5 wide? Yeah, I’m around 16.5 average after the 1.08 conversion factor, gauge reads 15.5 for most tanks of fuel.

Big heavy wide tires and wheels are a mileage killer.
I actually get better MPG’s in the city at 40 mph with no stops than highway cruising in any drive mode.
But it doesn’t bother me as it is the price of admission for the lift, wheels and tires.

glad my city is considered living out in boonies compared to big city folks.

town of 50k roughly and the nearest big city 50k+ is like 106 miles away.

    dont have to worry about

    1. turning radius, we slow pokes in parking
    2. getting groceries in a truck is normal (easier in the winter time compared to suv/cars)
    3. parking spots out in the back 40, still have to walk whether its 70F or -20F
    4. park a$$ end into the parking spot
    5. plenty of parking when you dont have to worry about lines in winter time (you cant see them anyway)

I've gotten as high as 24 mpg on a 650 mile trip driving between 65 and 70, seemed anything over 70 dropped it dramatically. Driving style will affect it as well as in any vehicle, aggressive acceleration will drop it as fast as anything. The mpg figures the truck spits out is about as accurate as I've ever seen in a vehicle. I did put larger load range E all terrain tires (33" 275/70-18) on it so I could get higher mpg's I'm sure but he size of the tire is a good balance between mpg and functionality for me. 35's may look good but there is a price to pay for that in the mpg dept.
