Hey all! I've been reading for days about different brake set ups for towing. Slotted/ drilled/ dimpled/ cryo/ magical/ cursed/ etc. And it's really overwhelming. I tow a 6k camper and would like to upgrade my brakes. The truck has 187k on it with original rotors, still in good condition of you can believe it. I just put new oem pads on it about 5k miles ago. I've been looking at the powerstop z36 kit. But all the horror stories about drilled rotors kinda has me worried. I'm not hard on my brakes, but definitely want to be able to stop when needed without warping. I've been pricing cryo rotors, and I can get all 4 stoptech slotted cryo rotors for $530 from buy brakes.com with the -$50 off coupon.

    https://www.buybrakes.com/toyota-tu...ed-rotors-slotted-brake-rotor-high-carbon-126

It's still more expensive than the z36 kit. And I would still have to buy the ebc yellow pads unless there are other pads that are recommended, but I wanted some advice on whether or not this was overkill for what I'm doing, I'll also be upgrading to SS braided lines in the future. I appreciate everyone here greatly!

Not trying to talk you out of the expensive stuff, but I tow regularly and use 50 dollar pads from Napa. No issues, And that's only cause they were the closest to my house ! Lol

They used to drill rotors in the old days. Do you know why? The pads "gassed" and the holes were needed. Happened to me a Bridgehampton. Luckily the chain link fence stopped me.

New pad material is MUCH better. Yes the expensive cars have them. I spoke to a friend who knows a Corvette engineer. Know why they drill their rotors? Voice of the customer (it looks cool).

If you want more stopping power, consider a pad with more "bite". If you contact major brake pad companies, they should be able to make a recommendation. Hawk was very helpful in my pad selection.

https://www.hawkperformance.com/ Just tell them what issue you are having and what you would like it to do (or problem to correct) and they may be able to help. Any good brake company will do the same for you.

I just put the power stop z36 pads and rotors on my truck and immediately noticed a difference. My stock pads were only 26k old and had plenty of life left, but I got a good deal on the power stop kit. My stock rotors would wobble under a lot of heat/pressure. The truck has a lot more stopping power. I have towed yet, but I have a lot of weight in the bed.

I'll have to give them a call, still kinda leaning towards the powerstop kit because it will leave room in my budget for the SS brake lines. But if I don't need drilled or slotted rotors I may look into regular cryo rotors as well. I planned on running the ebc yellow pads, people seem to prefer them over hawk just from my research. I'm not sure if I wanna deal with all that brake dust though.

How is the dust with the pads that come with the kit?

EBC is a good pad. Call them instead and tell them all your needs. Aggressive bite to stop better and low dust, etc. They should be able to help.

It’s only been about a week and maybe 150 miles, but so far not much dust. Not as bad as others I’ve had where the wheel was covered.

New brake fluid with a higher wet and dry broiling point than OEM will dramatically help your chances to keep from brake fade while towing. Boiling brake fluid will kill any pad/rotor setup. I've had good luck with this as many of my friends who race on weekends.

When I did my brakes recently, I flushed mine with motul 5.1. It has higher heat max temp than dot 3. Only thing I noticed is the pedal seems mushy when cold, but as soon as the truck warms up it stops really good. Mushy pedal could be in my head though.

Pick your brand yet I've got to say I did Not like drilled rotors, you will be able to "feel" the holes when braking.

I think slotted is good enough but if you can find Angled vanes you will achieve better cooling than "straight" vaned designs - the angles point forward grabbing air and channeling it inward. Luck deciding, its tough....

Not to my knowledge, when I talked to the original owner he said he never had them resurfaced. And I have all the maintenance records from the dealership.

I appreciate all the feedback guys, I'll do some research in the products mentioned and do some more digging on rotors to buy

I'm putting the Power Stop Z36 setup on tomorrow. Including the braided SS lines. I tow a 6x12 enclosed trailer for work. Weighs between 5500 and 6000 depending on the day and materials aboard. I'm also doing the calipers, not really an upgrade...cosmetic. I'll let you know how they go.

Ten four. Picked it up earlier and felt good. I'll update Saturday after hauling the trailer. The red calipers and lines look GREAT.

    JMEVIS...
So...it isnt quite that simple...I ordered the brake set up from Auto Anything. I could NOT find the kit with red calipers on Amazon so I called PowerStop and they informed me they didnt have it for the Tundra..it wouldn't fit. HOWEVER...I called AutoAnything and was able to order the kit, WITH red calipers,(they guarentee fitment)and it worked perfectly. Im not sure why the hassle, or why PowerStop says it doesnt fit. The ONLY mod required was one of the bolts with the caliper wasn't right...my mechanic said it was not an issue had an OE Toyota bolt from a previous brake job that was perfect. I didnt do the brakes so I'm not exactly sure what the issue was but he acted like it was nothing didn't upcharge (and you know if it was a hassle they would have) .AutoAnything did NOT have the Red SS brake lines so that I got from Amazon.

    Summation:
AutoAnything for the brake kit with Red calipers
    Amazon for red brake lines
Have noticed a difference in braking. ABSOLUTELY stopping shorter and NO MORE brake fad. Good luck!

Did you tackle this job yet? Getting ready to do my brakes and went from replacing pads to replacing pads and rotors to replacing pads rotors calipers. The more I dig the more I think I should replace.

Yes I did front only. Hawk LTS pads and power stop cryo slotted rotors. I had to beat the old rotors off with a sledge they were rusted on. At this time I did not replace the calipers.

I had these https://brakeperformance.com/ on my 03 v8 4Runner and they were the best brakes I've ever had. Buy the slotted and dimpled rotors with their ceramic pads and you will love them. Super smooth stopping. The 03 SR5 4Runners had small rotors. Always warped. Brake Performance guarantees no warping. I tried to warp mine and they never warped. I will put them on my Tunda in time.

I’m a little over 160k right now and trying to determine if I should swap my original calipers. I found a full set of Power stop z36 calipers, rotor and pads for $665 at carid.com (front only is $400 or $250 for pads rotors only). Seems like a fun upgrade and good deal. At the same time I’m cheap and will probably do the minimum. Haha
