I'm still trying to get used to the gates on the console shifter. Why should it be necessary to row the shifter back and forth and down just to put the transmission in drive? This is my first Tundra (I came from a Duramax) and I love the truck so far. I have to look down at the shifter every time I put it in drive to make sure the selector is in the right position.Small gripe, maybe I'll get used to it.

I'm with you. I drove a console shift then a column shift. I find the column shift much more natural feeling. I have no desire for a console shift.

I have no issues putting my truck in drive. You came from a column shift to a console shift, there will be a learning curve.

No issues here with stick shifter. I've been driving mine now for 4 years. Can do it with my eyes closed.

I actually think it's better on console when you put it in sequential mode

I've driven manual transmissions all my life so I still stab at the nonexistent clutch pedal every once I awhile. You'll get used to it.

The shifter in the Tundra is like a beefed-up version of the one in my Camry, which I commuted in for the last 11 years. It’s very second-nature to me, but I think I remember having to get used to it back in the day.

I like it better than my Wife's Durango R/T. It has a little rotary knob for shifting the Trans, just like our 4H, 4L selector knob. That Jacks with me every time I get in there.

It also has the paddles on the back of the steering wheel if you want to "manually" select your gears. Goodness gracious, dont accidentally hit one of those while your driving. I couldn't figure out how to turn the manual off while I was driving, people behind me probably thought I was drunk.

Traveling for a living presents the opportunity to drive rentals of all kinds and I don't have any issues swapping car to car but, a Buick Lacrosse, that one was irritating for the first day.

I do actually prefer a console shift over a column shift. It's just the zig zag back and forth that annoys me.I don't understand why it just couldn't have been designed in a straight line. That seems more intuitive to me. Personal preference I guess.

This is my first console shift. Pulled the wiper switch down a few times, lol.

    I prefer column shifters.

Your wiper switch is down near the center console shifter?

It's close to where a column shift would be.

I was just joking. So you have the console now? You said you accidentally pulled on the wiper switch which of course would be located next to the column shift location.

    Ya, I figured.

Yes, console shift now (my first ever). Only had column shift before so was used to putting into gear by grabbing a lever on the right side of column.

I used to drive manual trans so console shifter is natural for me. It's right there where your arm is resting so it's right at your finger tips. It's like having your TV remote next to you rather than having to reach for it on the coffee table when you want to change the channel. Additionally, have you ever seen a sports car with column shifter? With that said I would never buy a column shifter vehicle.

I agree with you completely. It's one of the few things I don't care for about the truck. I don't necessarily mind the console shift, just don't really like how it's such a maze to get it from P to D. I'd rather just be able to slap it straight back into drive from park or reverse. Granted, every other truck I've ever had has been column shift, so I don't know any better. I do miss the column shift sometimes.

I drove manual sticks for decades. Nothing more natural than the auto console stick compared to the manual. To me the column shift is what came in base trucks back in the day with smaller V-8's. Nothing has changed in that regard I think as far as paired with smaller V-8's I can shift the hell out of it just like an old manual stick. Good ole days. That's natural IMHO.

Grew up on column shifter, I let my duramax go which also had the column shifter- I agree, it was so easy to throw it down 3 clicks and go. Looking down doesn't bother me, although I'm still learning that movement and I'll get it. The thing I really like is the downshifting engine brake action to the side, when you need to pay attention in the moment and know you're not going to drop an extra gear in err.
