Hi all, hoping someone might be able to shed some light on the locking, alarm, and transponder key system for the first gen tundra. I bought my 06 AC over the summer off craigslist from California and drove it back to Colorado (possibly very risky but it was too nice to pass up and has been good so far). Long story short, the guy only gave me one key and remote with the truck. The key is just the bare metal "valet" key so my first question is should I bother getting a "master" transponder key cut from the stealership and is that something I can reprogram myself? Or, does my truck even have the immobilizer or whatever that the transponder key would talk with? Since I've been driving it for this long without any issues is this something even worth looking into? My only real concern with that is what seems to be a dealer installed "Karr" alarm system.

My truck has under 60k original miles and came with the window sticker and all the Toyota papers plus a bunch of "Karr" alarm stuff. Got me to start looking for it, I always saw a blinking blue LED when the truck was locked but thought nothing of it until I saw those papers. Eventually found the light and a blue plastic Karr shock sensor box under the steering wheel interior panels near the parking break (I'll attach pictures below). Curious if anyone knows much about these systems. You would think that with an "advanced" security system you would need the master transponder key to make it not freak out but maybe this is only a remote unlock/lock issue? I have one keyless remote and haven't had any issues with it but will I run into issues if I try to add another remote to the system?

TL;DR: is the master transponder key necessary/worth it? and what is the proper way to program a new master key, and new key fob remote?

@ZAR did you ever figure out what is happening? I'm in a similar situation, no chipped key, just a pair if metal ones and now my immobilizer has kicked in.

Even my 2006 Toyota key isn't chipped. I don't think any of them are? I just got a key blank online and got a friend who runs an Ace Hardware in town cut it in their machine.

That said, for programming the factory security system and other functions like the immobilizer stuff, check reply # 20 over here: https://www.tundras.com/threads/need-help-disabling-automatic-door-locks.33158/#post-1931311

That PDF attached to the post talks through the security system and whatnot.

@ZAR has some weird aftermarket system in the truck. Probably not the right person to ask about issues with your factory system.

Shifty is right, I did a bunch more research way back when I posted this. I don't believe any of the first gen Tundras have chipped keys. Your immobilizer probably kicked in from unlocking just your door with the metal key and not the key fob. The fob is what disables the immobilizer from what I understand. I ended up getting another key cut at the dealership, got the plastic headed one, and it was only a few bucks. Still would like another fob though.

As for figuring out my system, I still haven't and there's been no issues. I'm pretty sure the Karr system was one of those dealer installed 'upgrades' they try to offer you when you're purchasing new. Seems like mostly a scam, just a blue box wired into the ignition system or whatever so they can make some money and people think it's more safe.

I can tell you with high confidence, my '06 AC definitely does not have this feature.

When you said bloody mary, it was my 1st thought. I love those damn things, like a bloody mary beer. Cheaper, milder beer, the better.

I know what I'm gonna be drinking tonight!

Turns out I had a whire that was routed in the wrong place (not severed, just wrong location), issue came up after getting my timing belt changed. Toyota service dept. eventually figured it out and I got my 06 back on the road.
