Good morning Tundra family. i was just wondering if anyone has put in aftermarket head units into there tundra before and how that went for you. what brand did you get? did it have navi? did you lose factory aux? i just got a sony xav-av100 with apple car play no navi from crutchfield.com. they have great deals, payment plans and just about everything electronic wise you wold need from car stereo systems and head units and back up cams to tvs and appliances and great customer service on the chat when you ask questions about the product fitting your needs/car. cant wait to get my head unit and install it and see how it looks

I have a Kenwood DNS-893S. I lost the Factory aux, but that unit has its own aux input (as most do). I suppose you could put a USB port in place of the Factory Aux slot and you'd be golden.

The Kenwood has built in Nav, CarPlay, XM, Bluetooth, all the bells and whistles. It also connects up to your data port, so you can display gauges, tire pressure, trouble codes, etc. right on the unit.

They can be had for < $800 if you shop around. I usually use Crutchfield for accessories and technical info, and then buy the unit from places that have more reasonable prices.

The CD Player broke on my Stock 2008 SR5 Headunit so I just had a Stereo place Install the New 2017 Kenwood DNX-994S which comes with Garmin Navigation.
I Love it !!! Sounds Great even with the Crappy SR5 Stock Speakers & the Garmin works perfect.
Plus, right now Kenwood is offering a $ 100 mail in Rebate.

How does that work with video back up? Does it still have same Toyota look when backing up? The blue and red lines ?

Yes, the Unit has that ability.
I didn't have the Toyota Tailgate back-up camera so I bought an Aftermarket Back-up camera and it works Great with the Unit. The Unit allows you to Tailor the "Back-up Lines" with Blue/Red Lines & configure them to your Preference or NOT use them.

The "Look" / view may vary depending on the Brand of Camera because there are many different Lens & Chip QUALITY levels in the Camera Products.

Not to mention that Kenwood is the only head unit that is licensed to use Garmin for their gps nav. I am thinking of switching to that unit, I have a 17 CM Platinum and the head unit has already been swapped out at the dealership, the xm radio is screwing up, still is, the usb port constantly greys out. Dealership isn't being very helpful. I am leaning towards the Kenwood and ripping out the crappy JBL speakers and putting in Bose.

Another cool trick with the Kenwood, is if you press and hold the Home button, it will display your backup camera at any speed/gear until you press and hold again.

I just had alpine ilx CarPlay installed and now use Siri Spotify and Google Maps to manage the cockpit. The dash kit eliminates all the knobs and buttons. Took me a minute to get used to using wheel controls exclusively but now I wouldn’t go back. Got harnesses to maintain camera and aux and whatnot. I love having the truck operate like iOS 80E0A157-A9F8-4615-BA42-5B6C99FD7A07.jpg

What kind of rear view cams did you guys put in? I want to get the one that is inside the tailgate handle that comes on tundras with a factory backup cam. Make it look factory. Found one for 129 and it’s 150 to install it at Best Buy. My head unit comes ready for a backup cam. Anyone know where to get it cheaper or would that be my best bet?

I put all alpine R 6.5” in front and back with Amp and 8” sub and the truck fucking bumps. If ur a real bass head you might want more sub but the 8 fits anywhere and doesn’t over do it.

There is one on Amazon for $30, They provide you with a drill bit to make a hole in the existing tailgate handle. Coolint is the manufacturer. I just installed mine this week but don't have the new head unit in yet to see the quality. It was rated good on Amazon. It took about 15 minutes to measure, tape up, and then drill through the plastic on the handle. Fits great!

Was it easy to take out the handle? What about the camera and wiring? Does that come with the kit?

I think I will go 8 or 10. I just want a quality sound. I know the best brand recommended to me by a bass head was a 10 inch soundstream sub but I need to find someone to do a custome enclosure because trucks are tough with space especially with double cab trucks

I went with JBL GTO 609C speakers in the front. They are component speakers - about $95 on Amazon now. The tweeters were installed in the sails. I removed the dash speakers as they are low quality.

For the rear, I went with Image Dynamics ID 65 coax ones - $89. Easy install.

Both front and rear speakers will need adapters to fit on the doors.

Let me know if you have questions.

No need to remove the handle. Do it on the truck. The kit comes with the camera, wiring, and drill bit.

The screen size on my Kenwood DNX-994S is 6.95".
It also has both Apple & Android Car Play. I haven't used / needed to use those yet so No Report on how well they work on the Kenwood.

CarPlay is great, but I don't rely on the Maps app for navigation (does anyone?). I use the built in Garmin nav and just use CarPlay for the other stuff it does. I really wish Waze would come to CarPlay. That would make it so much more useful.

I use google maps if I use any navigation but I don’t usually need navi. I like car play because of the Siri, and Apple Music. I love Apple Music

Yeah. I use it mostly for Siri and Phone. Unfortunately Google Maps doesn't run on CarPlay, or it might be a contender.

That would be so cool if google maps did it. I just got a kit for a back up cam from a1 auto that is in the handle of the tailgate. Can’t wait until it gets here and we can hook it up to my sony head unit.
