I just replaced my rear passenger door actuator. Now it unlocks and locks great. Problem is, I failed to connect the rod from the door handle to the actuator. So, my door is closed and I can't get it open. Has anyone made this nincompoop mistake? How can I get my door open?

I think you’ll have to try to pry the door panel off and reach it from the inside. No way to do it from the outside or else it’d be that easy to break in to the truck. Since it’s closed you won’t be able to get the whole panel off but might be able to pull it back and reach it.

I took these bolts off so I could pry open the door enough to be able to pull the panel open and get my hand in there. However, when I was able to reach the lever to open. Since the door was unbolted, it came crashing down.

This is the other part that broke. It keeps the door from swinging open too far.

On the bright side, if anyone ever runs into this problem, I can give advise on a couple things not to do. A 20 minute actuator replacement turned into 3 hour debacle. :(:boom:

Glad you got it back together. What a disaster! I suggest anyone reading this, to actuate the lock/latch with a screwdriver and trying the handle “before” closing the door. after doing any type of work in the doorpanel.

I worked professionally in car audio and have removed door panels than I can remember. ALWAYS check your door handle function before you close the door.

I didn't take the time to watch any. With the front door open, the hinge bolts for the back door are exposed. I decided to unbolt the door from the frame so I could pry it open at the bottom enough to get the panel clips out. Then I was able to remove the panel enough to reach in and push the lever to open it. Once I had the panel off I should have bolted the door back to the frame. I didn't. So, it came crashing down when I pushed the lever to open it. The door check held it from getting banged up. But that door check is dead now. I had to remove the door check to be able to put the door back on.

The good news at least it's do-able if you forgot to hook the actuator! :) just be more prepared.

Mine is a first gen but On the rear I just did the same thing except I can open the door from the inside. Can’t figure out why the handle won’t work. It seems as if there is a white piece of plastic that just hangs down and sits above the latch on the actuator. Does anything else hold it in place?? I just replaced my actuator from supposedly another 04-06 tundra but there are some differences. The part shown is fatter on the one that came out rather than the one I installed.

Ok, I did the same thing. Anymore extensive instructions? Should I order a replacement mechanism before I attempt to take it off at the hinges? I only have one vehicle and would rather not have to drive around without a door.

I would open the door thats the same as the one thats stuck take the door panel off , roll down the window and practice fishing the latch release while you can see and associate feel an angle. After a couple good practices. Roll down the window on the stuck door and repeat your fishing for latch but now blind since the doors shut.

that would be my non evasive suggestion to anyone.

if you have a nylon wedge and mechanics mirror and a light that would help the going in blind part.

Good idea NT, I will try that today, I think I have a steel ruler I might be able to modify into a slim jim of some kind. I have the nylon wedge. I wonder if there is a small camera I can connect to my phone??? I'm gonna look around. Thanks Nueve Tundra.
