If I let my truck sit overnight, the next day when I turn on the AC I hear an awful grinding noise for 2-3 seconds then it goes away.

    AC still blows cold.

it doesn’t do it after I have it on and then turn the truck off to go into the store then come back out. The truck has to sit overnight for it to do it.

Hard to reproduce for the dealer to get it fixed under warranty.

Any ideas what this might be?

This has been a gripe here on the forum for a bit, but I haven't seen any problems arise from the noise we all get sometimes. If you leave the fan on low before you start it, it usually won't make the noise. I personally try not to worry about it. ;)

Whew, OK. I had the same problem develop on my 2016 Tacoma after 4 years.

    Glad to hear it’s expected.

Ya it's a thing across different makes and models. My old ranger did it too. My tundra did it last week again. Having ac on before cranking truck solves it like mentioned above.

    Is this the noise?

Just started this a few days ago. Ac takes a minute to start up as well. Wondering what this noise is. Seems to be somewhere in dash behind radio.

Pull your cabin air filter (in your glove box), and reach in and spin the blower motor by hand and check for debris. Rats love to get in there.

Ok. Will try. Nothing in there. I did replace cabin air filter the other day, and it was very dirty.
The sound seems to be coming from the center of the console right behind the radio/cd player (which also has some issues, occasionally it will turn itself on or off-this can get a bit nerve wracking if it went off a a loud volume the day before and then suddenly comes on!).
We bought this truck used 3 years ago. Now has 147000 miles on it.
Other issue is that heater only works on passenger side. Cold air comes out on driver's side. AC does blow cold on both sides. Noise happens 2 out of 3 times whether AC is turned on or off.

No it’s not that noise. I’ll try and find an example of it.

@Ldmill22 that definitely sounds like something has gotten stuck in your HVAC system.

That sounds horrible. The sound I'm talking about is a split second but milder version of that

Just spoke with my neighbor. He said yeah, that's a Blend Door actuator noise. His Ford Flex started doing that, they had it fixed, it started again and they've had it like that for about 10 years...just stays on for a couple seconds and never comes on while driving, so it doesn't really bother them that much. We may do the same, rather than pay $$$ to fix it at this point.

Mine does the same thing after sitting for a few days. Sounds like a grinding noise for just a second or 2. Never hear it again for the rest of the day.

If it continues you might check the cabin air filter to make sure that no rodents haven't set up house in your filter housing. It doesn't take long to do. It's about a three minute job.

Good thinking. I didn’t think about that.

That stupid noise and the popping seat have driven me crazy since not long after I purchased my 21. Dealer says he can never duplicate either issue. I to leave the fan on one notch when I shut her down and there is no noise on start up.

I have started doing that as we are in warm months now however I can still hear it over the roar of my engine when I start up my truck. It’s hard to hear but it’s still there.
