So for the past two years, my air conditioner has froze up during the few weeks of high humidity that we have here in northern Arizona during monsoon season. I’ve been trying to ignore it, but I know it’s something I need to replace. Fast forward to a few nights ago, the furnace stops blowing hot air. I had a buddy come out and help me rig up the furnace to pump some hot air for the next few nights, as we are in a bit of a cold spell. I just had my first son a few weeks ago and I want to make sure the house stays comfortable for him. I would rather not try and replace parts here and there to limp it by for a few years.

So as far as I can tell:
The unit came with the house; Built in 2007
It is a 5 ton Goodman
I believe it would be called a package system? The AC and furnace is all in one unit and is roof mounted.
The system has two zones. I have a two story house and one zone is for the upstairs and one for the downstairs.

Does anyone have any insight on the price I should expect to spend on a new system?

5 ton is on the larger end, I'd say for both condensor, evaporator and labor to remove/install units depending on EER efficiency choice, region of USA, $8-14K. Could be a lot less to let a professional give it a good look over. Goodman's in 07 used low quality copper that developed holes and leaks. If condensor, compressor or evap units are toast, it may be better to replace all. Luck.

Get 3-4 quotes and you'll have your price.

It will vary greatly, as posted above.

Your going to be looking at 7-9k easy. Also goodman is craaaaap!
I just bought and installed a 4 ton split system 17 seer dual stage heat, dual stage cooling, I got the unit at cost and did all the work myself(American standard, Tranes little brother) I spent about 5.5k total I think. Any other company is going to bend you over and not be gentle; usually double what the unit costs them; markup and labor.
Is your unit a heat pump or a gas pack? I’m guessing it’s 410a, which needs the coils really clean to work properly. If you haven’t changed a filter or even ran a filter, or have never had coils cleaned, that could be your issue.
The unit I pulled from my house was 19 years old and still cranking out the snowflakes and heat, but it sucked energy. My mom has a 21 year old Trane that still rocks out too. Buy a quality unit and maintain it

You should stick with Goodman for best $$$ for what you get. Comments from people who say Goodman is crap have not opened these units up next to a carrier, trane, rheem etc... Goodman is owned by Daikin and backed by a 10 year warranty. They have copeland compressors and are fantastic units for the money.

    Replace condenser, furnace/air handler.

Can you still buy Goodman’s on Scamazon and have handy Randy install them?

Do you change the furnace filter often or use the very restrictive high end filters?
I doubt that’s it but, my whole unit froze up in the summer all due to a dirty and restrictive filter. My HVAC buddy said they are really hard on units and to use the cheap HD or Lowe’s brand and change often.
Good luck. I hope it’s nothing major.

Twelve to 15 years is about typical life on the condensor and AC coil in the air handler. Both of mine developed simultaneous refrigerant leaks at 15-16 years.

New technology with variable speed compressors and variable speed air handlers can now provide incredible efficiency and energy savings both heating and cooling, and the efficiencies continue to improve. Problem is that if the furnace is in good shape, it will probably last twice as long as the AC. I replaced my condenser and coil 20 months ago with the highest efficiency Carrier I could get without going into features that couldn't be used with my existing Carrier furnace. Kept the same thermostat. Four ton Carrier 24ABC648 condenser and compatible coil, 16 SEER, installed and running: $5151.20

If I'm still in this house in 15 years, maybe I'll replace both AC and furnace as a combination unit.
