Hey, everyone. Bought my new Tundra in March, and I'm just at 5,000 miles. I know this topic is beaten to death, but I see most answers from 2-3 years ago.

Toyota swears the 10,000 mile oil change is fine with zero problems... but I'm kinda freaking out over this. I'm not a gear head, but most I know that I trust say they would never go 10,000 miles, even if it is a great full synthetic oil.

Welcome from NC! It’s fine, check out Blackstone lab reports from members here if you are still unsure.

No reason to freak out, just change it every 5000mi if you're worried.

i just go by the rule: if using synthetic 10k if non-synth every 5k or if i'm not racking up miles change somewhere between 9-12 months.

Folks on here have sent their used oil off to independent labs for testing and it has come back fine. Since it’s synthetic, 10k miles is an ok interval. I’m not a huge fan of going that many miles between, but it is what it is.

I agree. 10k seems excessive. I just got a 2020 and will change my own oil at 5k intervals.

    I did every 5k.
If you’re towing, I would do it more frequently than 10k

I’ve heard tell that some of the Tacomaworld guys had luck telling the dealer they tow frequently and had their oil done at each 5k Toyota Care appointment.

How much did you just pay for that truck? Why not just change it at 5k for peace of mind. It doesn’t cost much

Thanks, guys. I appreciate it... don’t do any towing, and don’t anticipate much of it down the line. And don’t put a lot of miles on it, either. Took a 1200 mile trip to the Panhandle for stupid-hot hiking in July, so that’s the only reason I’m ready for service at the 5 month mark.
-Bought another Toyota because it’ll last forever, but still want to treat it right.

I did my oil change at 5,000 miles - the same day as my 5,000 mi service - after finding out oil change wasn't on their list of things to do.
I agree that 10,000 mi is excessive. I'd rather be safe than sorry and just do it more often.

My old schedule was every 5k, but I am now changing the oil and filter every 4k.

Oil changes are cheap... engines are expensive.

Why wait? Change it early and often, as it doesn’t hurt. Waiting for the magical moment does.

Search severe service oil change intervals and make sure you don’t fall in that category.

I watched that Blackstone Video someone put up last month, and Blackstone Guy was asked in the video interview about intervals. He said 5k miles is best! Irregardless of synthetic or not.

I run Schaeffers full synthetic, I do a change once a year right before winter or 10k miles, whatever happens first. I’m at 8k miles on the oil now and will change in late September/ early October. I do about 10k a year give or take

On my old Titan, as soon as the warranty was gone I started 10k mile intervals for oil changes. I only used Royal Purple or Mobile1 full synthetic, and never had any issues. I sold it after I got my Tundra after 14 years and 235k miles. Never had a single engine problem. The guy who bought it from me has reached 250k and continues to have zero problems. The only time I deviated from that interval was after towing something significant. I did all this based on research and lots of oil tests that others did on the Titan forum I followed.

I thought it was a great interview as well. I took from it that a new lower quality oil is probably Better than a premium oil on extended intervals

I can tell you that 10K is too long (IMO) for a synthetic oil and filter change on my Alfa Romeo Gulia, which I drive too hard.

Personally, even though the Tundra is leased, I will change the oil every 7500 miles. It strikes me as the "right thing to do" here in the heat of South Florida, even though I don't drive it hard or tow regularly.

My issue is that due to the 'VID and working from home, I'm barely at 2400 miles since the beginning of the year. At this rate it'll be well over a year before I reach my typical 5K OCI.

And the Blackstone guy uses conventional oil! Whatever is on sale at Walmart. All 0w-20 oils are synthetic...I use a 5w-30 synthetic manufactured by Shell (Quaker State brand) that was $2.95 a quart at Walmart. You cannot possibly go wrong at 5,000 mile intervals.

I'm planning to change mine once a year as long as that continues to be about 5000 miles or less.

Oil changes every 5,000 miles for me. Service guy said oh you don't need an oil change yet I said yes I do, end of story.

It's the cheapest insuance for a long running engine.

Sounds like you are Texas. If so you probably have a FFV which should be changed every 5k per Toyota

Put some Amsoil Signature or Mobil 1 Annual Protection in there with a good filter and you can run 25k

Light driving style and I bet you’d get another 3-5k miles on that oil. They put special stuff in it.

That may be what the "labs" say, but in the environment I live in, and they way I drive the vehicle, I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving oil in a vehicle for 25K miles. Maybe I am wrong, and If that's the case so be it. A small price for peace of mind.

If your environment or driving style is considered “severe” then of course you should adjust accordingly

I have 250k on my tundra. Previous owner followed 10k intervals and several that were closer to 12k
