    Happy long weekend everyone.

I've watched a ton of videos as well as read many a thread here on changing the trans fluid in my 2016 TSS 5.7 liter. I drained the pan via the drain plug and it was a solid, on the line 4 quarts. I pulled the pan off saving everything in it and the filter (not much came out of the filter) and it produced another 2 quarts. So, 6 quarts total in the pan alone. This seems really odd to me given everything I've watched and read. I was expecting 3.5 - 4 but 6? Should I really go back with 6 when I refill?

Full disclosure....I have a case of Amsoil ATF and was going to run a few quarts at a time through it to help dilute the remaining fluid in the tranny.

    I appreciate the feedback.

Most dont pull the pan for a drain and fill. Most, myself included, just drain and fill. You got out 4 quarts which is right at the norm.

OK...that makes sense. I'm overanalyzing with a dusting of paranoia. I'll go back with 6 and then the subsequent drain and fills will be 4 or whatever I get out of it each time.

Put 6 back, and do the fluid level check procedure with the trans at correct temp for the check.

I wouldn't even question whether to put 4 or 6. Replace what you took out.

I've dropped the pan and replaced the filter as well and your spot on with getting about 6 quarts. 4 quarts is if you dont drop the pan. I refilled with 7qts and then did the check procedure and got about 3/4 of a quart back out. If you have a level and an OBD tool the check procedure is actually very easy to do. Id definitely recommend doing it after dropping the pan. I've also done drain and fills without dropping the pan and just done the 4qt method without checking but now that I've done the check procedure a few times I just always do it since I'm pretty confident with it now. I just use a magnetic level on the transmission pan. Having a Bluetooth OBD2 tool like an OBDLink MX+ you can just lay under the truck and watch the temp on your phone and take out the check bolt when it hits 99° and just let it go til the stream is weak enough that it starts going down the side of the pan, then close it up. Obviously if you get nothing out, then add a qt and start over.

Drains 2 qt. Screw the plug back, wait couple of hours, it drains 2 more quarts.
