Took my truck in for it's 5k service. Was told by the techs there that the synthetic oil lasts 10k miles and doesn't get changed before then. I have never once heard of waiting 10k before every oil change. I'm no super star tech so tell me if I'm wrong, it should be changed?

I don't trust the extended oil intervals. I buy oil that claims it is good for 7500 miles or what have you, I still change it between 3k and 5k miles.

If the dealer is covering the cost of oil changes I don't blame them for saying its too soon.

That is the normal service interval. Toyota covers the service for first 24k miles. But if you read the info in the manual there are certain circumstances (heavy tow, dusty roads, extended idle etc) that recommend a 5k oil change interval.

    Do it yourself every 10K.

Use a high quality full synthetic oil and factory filter.

    Don't overthink this one.

Wasn't really over thinking it. Just never heard of waiting so long between oil changes and was curious. Done them between 3-5k my whole life. You guys wait every 10k miles?

    And yes, it's dealer covered.

Just took my truck in for the 5000 mile service and asked them to also change the oil..they said no problem. You basically get two oil changes for free so they will start to charge me for oil changes at 15,000 miles.
No way was I going to wait till 10,000 miles for my first change.!!

You’ve never had a modern car before. BMWs have 15k OCI! I too use to remember 3k OCI on older cars. I sent my used oil for analysis and at 10k OCI, the oil was still pretty good.

they say the best oil is clean oil so it really doesn’t matter what oil you want to use.

I change my own engine oil. I won't do it one mile less than 10,000 miles. Blackstone Laboratories slaps me for not going 13,000 miles on the engine oil.

And for those of you that care. And for those of you that don't care. I've been using Mobil 1 0W20 for all of my 77,000 miles. At 80,000 miles I'm switching to 5W30.

EDIT: I don't tow with my Tundra.

I tow daily in my work truck so I put a drain valve in and ill drain oil at 5k and replace and then change filter at 10k. No issues yet and it's on 220k+.

Have a couple modern vehicles that I change at 5k lol. Maybe I don't need to.
I don't see myself waiting for 10k once I start doing it myself. Thanks for the feedback everyone! At least made me feel a little better about the 10k lol

I change mine every 5k with synthetic. This equates to about two oil changes a year, which is well worth the peace of mind.

I change mine every 5k with Mobil synthetic. The last oil change was at the dealer because my truck happened to be there. They left the filter drain bolt snug; never again.

I change oil and filter every 5k which is about 5-6 months driving. Oil is cheap - engines are not.

And let's combine it with the future. **cough cough** Tap tap. "Can you hear me in the back of the room? O.K. Good. The 2022 Tundra is gonna use 0W0 engine oil."

I believe it's one year. I had oil on my Sequoia for 15 months before going 10,500 miles and the analysis showed the oil still doing its job and the engine did not mind it.

The suspended particulates is what worries me. With 4 timing chains and 4 cams, we have a lot going on upstairs.

I drain my oil when it is hotter than hell with the hopes that the suspended particles are still in suspension. I even let it drain for a full afternoon if it is not windy out. haha, I wonder if it will even make a difference. I might never know, but I feel better about it at least.

The fleet trucks at work get 5 minute oil changes with no attention to detail and they get miled-out before anything wears out on the engine (200K+). I try to remember that when I start to get neurotic about oil changes.

I tow almost 5 days a week...so not every day but...

Oil changes are inexpensive in my opinion so I'm sticking with it.

Since I change my own and it's so easy and cheap I do it at 5K intervals, which works out to once a year for me. I wouldn't leave oil in more than a year if you experience 4 season weather. I've watched carwizard videos on youtube and he has shown what lax oil changes do to modern valve trains so IMO it's not even worth the risk. Frequent oil changes > fancy oil brands

I follow exactly what is in the service manual, not because I've done my own independent analysis, but because I want there to be NO ISSUES if I ever need to make a warranty claim. It is also for this reason that I take it to a Toyota dealership for all services, so that there are clear records of my service history. I also feel like this will be appreciated by the next owner whenever I sell the truck (though I have no plans to sell it anytime soon). I hit 12 months before I hit 10K miles, so I had the dealership change it at the 12 month mark.
