I was about to pull the trigger on the 4.88’s and noticed nitro plans to release the 5.29 gears around April. Currently on a 3.5” lift running 35’s. I’m having constant gear hunting when below 40mph. I’m in the process of building an overland rig and plan to tow a Jeep JK to jamboree’s across the US. I think it would be worth while to hold off and wait for the 5.29’s it would bring the truck back to 100% stock Peformance from the charts I have found online. Thoughts? Concerns? Looking for input.

    I kinda thought 4:88 was for 35s and 5:29 for 37s?

I would wait and see how the 5:29 gears work out. They get weaker as the numeric ratio increases, and there is potential for some noise as well.

Not sure how to read the chart cause 32in and 4.30 is stock but it shows -8%
    35 with 4.88 is -5%

My rule of thumb for the past 20 years: choose the ratio that brings it back to stock, then go the next more aggressive to make up for the extra weight of the bigger tires.

Generally, 4.88 brings 35’s back ronstock. So 5.29 is the natural choice.

32/4.30 = X/4.88. X is the equal ratio new tire size for new gears. Here X = 36.3”. So you’ve more than made up for moving to 35’s. 5.29 gears = 39.4” tire. I agree with Keith, you still have to make up for the larger, heavier tire so it’s not really a 1:1 ratio except RPM. If you never plan to go bigger than 35’s then 4.88 should be enough. The 5.29 of course gives you room to grow.

What most people don’t realize. Mpg is more affected by load than rpm.

    The shorter gears reduces load.

Less load means more ignition timing more of the time. And it means less fuel more of the time. It keeps you in closed loop more of the time. And it keeps the torque converter locked up more of the time.

Plus, the truck is just way more fun overall;)

I'm going to have to wait and go 5.29's then. I've got 8" lift on 37's and I tow a camper during the summer and already struggle to tow it before the lift and tires/wheels. Sounds like 5.29's should correct the tire/wheel/lift work then.

Keith is correct on MPG, RPM is not all.

I hesitated to change to lower gears on my truck because the motor would run a few hundred RPM higher than stock at freeway speeds. I went for it anyway and was surprised to find better MPG on the same old work commute. Plus a quicker truck.

That doesn't mean get 5.29 and stock tires and expect a miracle, but the optimal arrangement is slightly lower gears than the OEM equivalent.

On my 4Runner, I once did a 200 mile highway trip in OD, then the same 200 miles trip with OD off, turning about 3100 rpm at 75mph! Got the same mileage either way, except the transmission wasnt unlocking the converter every minute (literally), or downshifting on every small hill with it in OD.

I am seriously considering 37s on a Tundra, and 5.29s would be awesome for all the reasons posted above.

I have 4.88's. Now im gonna have to buy the 5.29's. I have 38" tires and I think it will help that much more. I would have waited but, I blew my rear end out about 6 months ago.

Has anyone out 5.29 gears in their 4.7 liter 2nd gen? I called nitro and they said 4.88s are the way to go on the 4.7. But why not the 5.29?

I own the Nitro Gear SEMA truck with 4.88 and 37" Nittos. Granted, I also have a SC, but the gearing feels spot on to me.

I would go 5:29. I have 34s on a 18 inch wheel and have the 5.7. I am running 4:88s and it feels perfect.

I was just curious if this is possible because on their website they specifically sell the 4.88 for the smaller engine and then on the 5.7 you have the option of either 4.88 or 5.29

Just to answer this question in case anyone was still wondering, the reason they don't sell 5.29s for the 4.7 and 4.6 is because those trucks have the 9.5" diff in the rear vs the 10.5" on the 5.7

At what tire size do you want to start thinking of rehearing? A true 35 inch and up?

Give Keith Carty from Dirty Deeds Industries a call on gears. His pricing is beyond amazing, and he will get you set up with what your truck needs.
