aside from the obvious, what are some of the pros and cons of each? I’m deciding if I should move up to 4WD on my next Tunsra.

You're gonna get almost 100% votes for 4x4 > 2WD. Main argument-- and it's a good argument-- is 'it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it'. Also, only about 4K more to buy, and better resale.

On the flip side, my 2WD TRD is very capable, even with the stock tires. And zippy and responsive. Allegedly it has better mpg's, but I'm not certain it's enough to make a difference.

A little of this and a little of that.
I couldn't imagine having a 2-wheel drive truck. It just doesn't make sense to me. I don't know why either....:confused::confused::confused:

    Where do you live?
Over the last few days the snow really hit the Seattle area. At one point I was behind a Tacoma Prerunner (2wd) with a similar lift and tires as my Tundra. Let’s just say he couldn’t even attempt the hill and had zero control.
Should get your 4wd premium cost back when you sell it. The first time 4wd low gets you out of a jam you will never consider 2wd again.

cheaper to spindle lift a 2wd. no cutting the crossmember with certain kits. If its just gonna be a streetqueen you might as well spend the extra money you would have spent on 4x4 on wheels/tires/lift/ etc

My first Tundra was a new 2010 DC, 5.7 2WD and had a cheap 3" spacer and block lift! It was an awesome truck and didn't weigh the pro's and con's between 2wd vs 4wd when I was looking!

So fast forward to 2016after trading it in on a 2016 Tacoma 2wd which I felt was a complete turd, I then went looking for getting back into a Tundra! I was going to get a 2wd but said, what if I needed the 4wd in a pinch, what about the resale value, what about the extra room in a CM, I then saw the scales tipped to the 4WD!

Then I asked myself do I really need it, should I spend the extra money on a 4WD do I need a CM, all the answers were, NO!

Then I read this and other Tundra forums in and out in regards to the 4WD's, I asked myself do I want it?

YES, I love the ability to have that option incase I ever needed it for myself or to help others in a bind is a blessing!

I will never go back to a 2wd Tundra or a own a Tacoma again, unless they put a diesel or bigger gas engine in a Tacoma!

    Good luck!

    Not nearly enough room here!
Hey Mike, another Mike here, welcome to the bunch:wave: Your uses/wants will determine whether you should buy a 4X4 or not. List all your reasons pro and con, only you and yours know them for sure. We're in Maryland and can get ice/snow every year. For us, if we'd "somehow" get caught in the truck when snow or ice hits,(rarely will my garage queen see such horrors) we don't get up our driveway without at least AWD, been there done that, got the tee shirt:D On vacation in Canada in the past, now in NY, some of the "Launching Ramps" are just bare-spots along the shore and as the signs all say, "Launch At Your Own Risk" If you get stuck, have a hundred dollar bill handy:eek2: As others have said, it won't take long for 4wheel drive to pay for itself if it's really needed. These days with everything so 'free wheeling' in the drive train, 4X4 doesn't cost as much to own, like it did in the past.

Hi Mike. Welcome to the forum. I had a 2WD prior to my current 4WD. Would never go back. I don’t do any off-roading but it’s nice having 4WD when the snow hits. I like knowing that I’ll be able to get where I want/have to in any weather.

If you never off road and live in a southern clime then 2wd. Even if above is true and you tow a heavy boat and use steep ramps then 4wd.

I’m in Atlanta and we got bad weather once every few years. I was 2wd and went 4wd after one time needing it in sunny weather after the ground was wet after a rain and I had to get on the grass and almost couldn’t get out. If you can do it, I would say go for it. As others have said, better to have and not need then to need and not have.

This is easy....Write down 4X4 and 2X4 on a piece of paper. Draw a line thru 2X4 and then.....buy a four wheel drive...

Similiar story here. We had 8” of snow. Next door neighbor and I both have 1Gen Tundras except his is 2WD. He couldn’t get out of the driveway into the street. Meanwhilst, I’m floating like butterfly and stinging like bee through the snow.

I say 4×4. I've owned a four wheel drive for the last 20 odd years. My first was a Jeep Wrangler and then my 05 tundra. I don't do any off roading anymore but it's nice to know that you have the four wheel drive there just incase. I have to get to work when it snows.

I have one of each, the 4X4 is my work Tundra and the 2X4 is my general purpose daily driver.

The 2X4 is more fun & economical to live with day in, and day out.

If you're in FL & don't launch boats 2wd will be fine. It will get the job done & be cheaper to own.
But 4WD just makes a rough situation easier. Say you drive onto a wet lawn & wheels start spinning. You can winch out (get out, shoes now soaked, unhook cable, find something to hook onto or ask someone to hook onto their truck, winch out, thank other person, clean cables, change shoes... or you could push a button & drive out with dry shoes & no embarrassment.
And, resale. 4wd sells for more, trades in for more, has more buyers interested. I live in an area that gets ice (+), I would NEVER consider buying a 2WD truck, there's just no weight on the drive wheels.

If you do happen to make a mistake and get stuck in your 2X4, there is a good chance there will be a 4X4 nearby that can help get you unstuck.
