I am a first time tundra owner with recently purchasing a 2018 trd sport. I tested out the 4wd low this past weekend and noticed on the dash that the 4wd high was lit up and the 4wd low just kept blinking and beeping the whole time. The beeping was extremely annoying so I was wondering if this is normal?

It means you weren't in 4lo. Did you put the truck into 4hi first, then put the transmission into neutral then into 4lo?

No, I didn’t. Is this what is needed to be in 4wd low? If so, why all the hoops to jump through just get there?

I'm not sure but if I had to guess (from the way 4lo works), it keeps people from wrecking their drivetrain by switching into it while going too fast (more than a mile or two per hour).

Shifting from 4hi you need to stop, shift into neutral, select 4 low and wait 3 seconds. The dash will then indicate 4low. Same operation to shift back into 4hi.
As a rule I do not operate 4 low above 20mph, if even that fast.

Yes, that's what the manual states. page 27

Yes, must be a Toyota thing.. my previous 16 Chevy Silverado was quite easy, didn't need to go to neutral but much easier to go to 4 Low.

When I bought mine it did the sam . Make sure your in neutral when you switch to 4l. You may hear some notching noise but it will go into gear. Also if it doesnt, roll forward and try it again. Hope this helps.

There’s a card on your sun visor with steps on how to engage 4wd.

Last night my 2018 wouldn’t shift from 2wd to 4hi. It beeped for a couple minutes then stopped beeping but the 4hi light kept flashing. I was in a position where I couldn’t stop (unless I was SURE I was going to be able to employ 4wd) so I had to drive like that for about 5 minutes before I could stop. I turned back to 2wd and tried switching back to 4hi and finally it went. I was then able to switch from 2 to 4 hi at will. I think my truck wanted me to get stuck!

How fast were you driving when you tried to engage 4hi?

I’d have to guess between 15 and 20 mph.

Toyota is very conservative with 4hi at 62. I shifted in and out on my 09 Taco and 07 Tundra well over 70 mph with no issues many, many times. All depends on road conditions and experience. Especially on my way up to AK with my Taco. Easy peasy....:burnrubber:

Keep in mind, 3rd Gen Tundras have something called a "brake stroke sensor" that can also cause the 4lo and 4hi to malfunction intermittently. Mine beeps at me and flashes 4lo sometimes when I start it. Can usually make it stop by shifting to neutral, quickly engaging and disengaging 4hi. Been doing it off and on for over a year. Doesn't appear to cause any other issues, but I do plan on fixing. Don't ask me why Toyota finds it necessary to measure brake stroke(??) I only know about it because my friend is a GM certified mechanic and he's replaced quite a few of them on Tundras. Hope this helps. And please, no stroke jokes. Well, maybe a few would be ok.

Dude! Don’t break it when you stroke it! That would be very bad!
