Turned on the truck after getting out of a store and 4lo light is blinking and car would go into drive seems like it's in neutral even when it's in park had to engage emergency brake to stop it from rolling. Is my transmission done? 2007 tundra trd 5.7

Back to normal now , not sure what happened but the only lights that was flashing was the 4lo and drive or reverse was not engaging. Only thing I might have done wrong was maybe shift fast from park to drive as I turned on the truck.

So I’m having this problem but it’s getting more consistent. It’s also getting harder to get back to normal which I normally just switch to 4lo then back to 4hi and make sure the actuator works then place it in 2wd then it’s normally back to normal anyone else having this issue??? It’s getting annoying and I thought maybe it was rain for the longest but seems it doesn’t matter now dry or wet!!

Yes always go to neutral first never do it in any other gear. It happens as soon as the truck is cranked. It’s acting like it’s in 4lo and then I switch the gear to neutral and move the switch to 4lo then 4hi then 2wd! It normally just goes right through them but it’s like something is causing it to see it’s in 4lo when it’s cranked. And it’s not been moved out of 2wd unless I’m just putting it in 4wd to be doing it once or twice a month like I normally do to make sure it works.

Most likely a actuator going out the problem is figuring out which one since the problem only occurs when cranked

It's your brake stroke sensor going bad. Have same issue on mine. Just haven't gotten around to replacing it. Usually have to put it in neutral, turn to 4lo and back to 2wd, then back into park. Have a friend whose a GM certified mechanic and he's replaced a number of these in Tundras.

Brake stroke sensor never thought of it and yes exactly what you have to do was your truck doing anything else??

Nope. It does it very intermittently, which is why I haven't done anything about it. 4hi and lo still work just fine. Don't ask me why Toyota finds it necessary to measure your "brake stroke." o_O I'm sure they have their reasons.

And also is that just the abs brake sensor on each caliper?? Cause that’s the only thing I see as far as brake sensors!

Yeah, that's a good question. Not sure to be honest. My friend made it sound like it was 1 sensor. Check that. I assumed it was 1 sensor, and you know about assumptions. I'll see if I can find out. Oh, and I just remembered that my emergency brake light will come on while I'm driving, and it goes away if I turn off the truck. Thinking that might be related?

If I remember right the stroke sensor is part of the brake booster

And is only found in the electronic brake booster and not on the vacuum type

The sensors by the calipers are speed sensors not stroke sensors. And if you're vs. And or abs light is coming on you probably will have a history code stored

Did you ever figure this out? I had a 2008 Toyota Sequoia Limited 5.7L with 230k miles and only the 4Lo light flashes! Nothing else or nothing more. I can drive it all fine but when that 4Lo is flashing, I noticed just recently that I cannot put it into 4wd at all. Then I turn off the Sequoia and restart it a few seconds later and the 4Lo light no longer flashes! Like WTH! Help please... Thanks.

No I have not. But I've been noticing that this problem occurs more often when it's a colder morning out like 45°F or below so I don't know really what's going wrong and when this issue happens I drive the truck for a few miles and turn off the truck and restart it immediately and the problem seems to be resolved at that time and everything seems back to normal. But I've been trying to research this particular issue but no luck yet. By the way, it's only the 4Lo that flashes and nothing else.

It’s been a intermittent issue for about a year now for us but most recently happened on a warm day about 70F. Mine is also only 4lo blinking no ce light and no other drivability issues(drove for 20mins with it flashing). It also does go away after restarting vehicle but I noticed it will not shift in 4h when 4lo is blinking. I just changed transfer case oil last month and it shifted fine after ??

I had 4lo flashing, check engine and trac off.
Didn’t effect performance at all. Finally after a week or 2 I realized radiator was damn near empty. After topping off lights went away and didn’t return.

I had a similar problem when trying to go from 4hi to 4low. Would flash and not engage. Or, not come out of 4lo to 4high. My mechanic finally figured it out. There is a calibration for your 4wd to engage. If that calibration is not correct, then it will not engage or disengage. He adjusted the calibration and have had no problems since.

I know this is an old post but this just started happening to me more frequently and it's exactly like Krich1988 described.
It started as a one-off a few years ago. It might happen ever year at random times. Now, it's nearly every morning.

On cold mornings, I start it and 4Lo is flashing immediately. It's a rapid flash - quicker than while shifting.
Just the light is flashing. It is in 2Hi. It drives normally in 2Hi. I drive to work and everything is normal (except for the flashing).
After work (it's warmer), I crank it up and 4Lo is not flashing.
NOTE: Immediately turning off the engine and restarting does not change anything. If 4Lo is flashing, it's going to flash for a while (guessing until the engine & drivetrain are up to temp or until it's off for a longer period).

WHILE 4Lo IS flashing (cold morning), it is in 2Hi. It will not shift to 4Hi or 4Lo. I move the switch but nothing mechanical happens - it does not even try to shift.

WHILE 4Lo IS NOT flashing (warm afternoon), everything works as expected. It shifts to 4Hi, 4Lo normal. 4x4 engages and disengages smoothly. I can verify the front axle is engaged (it's easy to tell if it's in 4Lo). No strange sounds or behavior. Everything just like new.

There are NO other symptoms when 4Lo is flashing except that 4x4 does not engage. No other lights, no other abnormal behavior. Just the 4Lo light.

    What should I look at?
