I’m now 400 miles in on my 500 mile break in period for the Nitro 5.29s recently installed on my CM. I’m running Nitto 37s with heavy front and rear Exp1 bumpers and a 160lb iKamper RTT. It’s a heavy truck even with some gear removed for the winter, but the new gearing provides better power and smoother transmission changes. The “no more hunting” claim is definitely true. I will say that the new gearing hasn’t created a night and day experience, probably bcs of weight and tire size. I had dual ARB lockers installed as well. Nitro advises the last 50 miles be done in 4WD to help break in the front diff. I’m excited to get this first 500 behind me and push the truck back to it’s full capabilities.

This is silly to be honest.
Think about it: we break in gears so we don't heat them up too much and break down the oil too quick. But, your LF axle, diff, and driveshaft is spinning as you drive down the road. So they already get some sort of heat up/ cool down as you DD normally. I would only worry about a break in process on the front end if you plan on doing 80+ mph through the desert in 4WD tomorrow or the day after. Just my 2 cents.

I get it. Just following the manufacturer’s recommendations as I want my investment to be in line with their specs for warranty, etc.

I understand the tires but is 160lbs that impactful? I’d guess my cover/toolbox combo is ~400lbs when loaded and after this holiday season I wouldn’t be surprised if my truck was lugging around 700+ lbs on the daily. Guess I better shoot Santa’s workshop a last minute request for gears under the tree on Christmas Day!

It's not just the weight but it's also a giant brick for wind resistance on the worst part of the truck.

Great thing is it’s a hard shell that doesn’t cut a huge profile like a square CVT or similar.

I'd wager you're probably close to 8,000 pounds, @Wildtrout; stock is just under 6k.

Yeah, definitely better than the soft cover tents but that's still about 5' wide and 8" tall of a flat area at the front of the shell.

Any size other than stock tire size is very impactful, having the truck stock is what works best for MPG's and performance, of course if you want bigger tires you need gears to have it perform close to stock but every modification is a compromise or at least most of them. I'm on 32" tires and it hurt MPG's but not a lot, can't imagine 37's.

Also true! I'm eventually going to 285/75/18's which is a skinny 35, regeared to 4.88's.

Yup. Front of the truck can handle the weight as opposed to my ARE shell which isn’t weight rated.

    Nitto makes a 35 in 11.5 btw. My 37s are also 11.5. I was coming from 295/70/18s.

You see the part about EXP1 front and rear bumpers? Rear is dual swingout with 37” spare. Also, steel sliders from White Knuckle, Decked system, and RCI steel skids. Point is it’s a heavy truck.

    Aren't they load range C?

Kendal makes a Klever RT in a 35x11.5x17 load range D IIRC.

Scratch that, maybe there is more than one 35x11.5x17 that Nitto makes cause the MT is a C. I don't see any other 35x11.5x17 on their site, maybe an older model?

The drivers side CV will turn the spider gears and bearing drag can cause the ring and pinion to spin.

@Wildtrout are you still liking the gears? I'm going to be moving to the same tires as you in a couple months and just curious what your thoughts were on the 5.29's.
