Hello fellow members i have a 2008 tundra 5.7 and i have 305/50/20 tire which is 32in tall and 12 wide. They are nittos 420s. They are Alittle bit heavier than stock tire but anyway i have 4.10 gears and i was wondering is it ok to step it up to 4.88 or is that to much. I mean i could go to 4.30 which is stock for everyone but when i bought the truck a year ago the owner didnt have tow package from the factory. 4.88 gearing with my tire setup would put me at 2080rpm at 70mph does that sound about right because our 6th gear is like 0.58 which is very tall gear. If i go to 4.88 will ill be hurting the engine because its revving more. I do run fully synthetic and change oil every 5000 miles. I get around 21mpg on highway with minimal wind. So mpg i know im going to lose but i care about reliability more than anything thanks...

If I remember correct, all 5.7 came with 4.30 rear gear, tow package or not and it was the 4.6 that had 4.10.
Go with the 4.88, you will not be overreving your engine.

When the tundra came out in 2007 through 2009 they offer a sport package. Which comes with 4.10 no tow package.

I wouldn't regear. Your 4.10\4.30 is already set up for towing and a sacrifice of fuel efficiency. A 32 isn't going to present a weight problem. If you regear you'll simply be at a higher rpm on the highway, especially when you are doing 75mph.

35 and up, heavy kevlars, etc is a different story.

If reliability is your priority, stay away from monster tires and tall gears. Unless your willing to do it properly and professionally. If I had to, 2inch old man or adjustable shocks and 33 tops.

    Just my. 02

Yes 75mph with 4.88 ill be at 2180rpm. Its either 4.30 or 4.88 but cannot decide. But thank you for your opinion.

I essentially re-geared from 4.30 to about 4.60 when I installed tires that are .59" shorter than stock, rpms are a little higher and mpg is a little less. Get up and go is noticeably better.

Well technically 4.10 is more for fuel not towing. But 4.30 is meant for towing hence thats why its called towing package but anyway ford uses a very high rear end like 3.33 or 3.73 but its not all about rear end. Its about transmission gears. And ford, chevy, ram all use a low gear so thats why they can afford to go high in the rear end. And we have a very tall 6th gear 0.58. Even a slight grade with 200 pounds it will downshift automatically. So guys whats the pros and cons of using 4.88 gears with stock height tires... In reality it takes more effort to my tire than a normal stock tire because i have more friction with the ground because my tire is 12" wide instead of 9". So everything comes into play...

I agree, it's relative though. My Rubicon had 4.10 for 32s and I bumped to 4.88 on 35 mtrk. I kicked ass on the street and when all the doors and roof was off but was a pig climbing up Californias Grapevine on I5.

The tundra has the power that the jeep didn't... But jeep didn't put 4.10 for fuel economy when others were 3.73
Hell...my old jeep, 3.73 was the upgrade..

Domestics want mileage and will have ridiculous gear sets that almost belong in cars..

4.10 on 32s would work great. Highway it would be ok too, just a tad high if you speed. It just depends on the application and the intent.

Totally unnecessary and a waste of money. But you do you.
