Out of curiosity, does anyone here installed a turbocharger on their 3rd Gen Tundra?

I just did a quick Google search on this and it seems that turbocharging isn't a real viable option. There a a couple of interesting youtube vids of custom builds/dyno runs.Supercharging seems to be the best alternative.

Why put a turbo? You can get a TRD supercharger and have it covered under the factory warranty if Toyota installs it. Or just do it yourself.

That’s what I found out as well. Which is a bit surprising, since all of the other competitors now have a turbo version of their flagship pickup truck models.

I agree, but, I wasn’t interested in adding a turbo to my truck. I am only curious about turbos on a Tundra. Especially, due to the fact that all the other pickup truck manufacturers now have a turbo version pickup truck in their fleet.

The tuning options are starting to appear, bet the HPtuners option would allow a custom turbo setup

OVtune is doing a twin turbo set up for new tacoma. He has stated that he would like to do the same a tundra one day.

Just a few corrections but I could be wrong because I like beer, #1. TRD (TOYOTA) does not have anything to do with Tundra superchargers now and it is now offered by Magnuson. #2. The factory warranty ended in the middle of 2015 for superchargers but Magnuson has a 36,000 mile warranty. but if your truck has 36,001 miles on it @ install the warranty is done. (I could be wrong on that one) #3. Any ASE Certified Mechanic can install the Supercharger.

The only company that has Turbo charged flagship engines in their pickup lineup is Ford. The Turbocharged 2.7L that is a 4 cylinder engine in the 19 GM trucks is treated as a base engine option which GM stated an interview about it. Toyota GM Ram and NIssan still flagship V8s.
As for the turbo aspect of the topic I am not sure on this but I would use the Magnuson Super Charger since it has had history with the 5.7 and Toyota used it as the TRD Supercharger up until a few years ago.

My (our) 5.7L design is now 11 years old. Back in 07 I'm fairly certain the 3 Big had no standard gas turbo charged power plants. I am totally certain that the big 3 got "Woke" in 07. The new Tundra proved to be a beast spec wise all around. Not long after that Dodge stuck with their 5.7L Hemi but had to spiff it up a bit to get it to 400hp and apparently recently has added smaller displacement power plants. Ford went to smaller displacement turbo eco boost power plants. GM had the 6.2L and still does but now also went to smaller displacement turbos. I won't mention their 5.3L eco-tec. These smaller displacement power plants need to be turbo'd to achieve their HP/Torque specs. Not sure how good that is in the long run in a full size truck. I'd bet Toyota will go to a smaller displacement turbo'd power plant too. (I like saying power plant.....haha)my 3 cents

    Supercharge it!

If it is installed by a Toyota dealer it does not void your factory warranty.

True. I read several articles about Ram and Chevy adding turbocharged versions to their fleet in the near future. There is also word that Nissan will have a turbo that will share the same engine specs as that of Ram’s future turbo. It’s said that Cummins will be heavily involved with both Ram and Nissan’s turbo engines, since they already produced the engines for both manufacturers’ turbo diesel vehicles.

I am not planning on doing anything to my Tundra engine in the near future. But, am curious about Toyota’s turbo projects and currently available turbos for the Tundra just for my own edification.

Yup, you’re absolutely correct. I bought my second gen tundra in 2008 and it blew away all its competition. Things have changed a whole lot since the. I. The truck world.

Sweet! I wonder what type of fuel rating it has. I have no need for that much power, though.

I believe that they are planning to include turbo models in both gas and diesel versions standard within the next few years.

If he is successful with the Tacomas, then I am sure that he will make turbos for the Tundras.

It [the magnuson] can be installed by any ASE certified technician when I checked a few months ago for the warranty to apply.

For me, and I know everybody has their own opinions, but in spite of a TQ advantage with turbos over superchargers, I much prefer the latter...not only for simplicity, less heat issues and far less pieces to be concerned with regarding failures with turbos...but also, NO. TURBO. LAG. woohoo! Just my 25 cents viewpoint.

I totally agree with you, and I do love SC. However, as a car enthusiast, I must say that curiosity kills the cat. If a SC can give the Tundra so much hp, I can only wonder what kind of hp a turbo would create. I can bet that you, as well as, the majority of Tundra owners out there are just as curious about the type of power delivery a turbo charger would produce in our beloved Tundra.

No real curiosity whatsoever here...okay a wee bit. I might observe just for grins and cheer the team on so to speak, but the rash of current turbo small displacement engines forced by CAFE and other standards is about to have at catastrophic effect on the auto industry once they disclose that the old way of emissions testing doesn't properly evaluate turbocharged engines... they will act like it's a sudden epiphany, and once they DO, they will disclose that "they are far dirtier to our environment than thought" (THIS IS TRUE) and then the next step it so kiss the internal combustion engine goodbye...forever. It's coming, and this is their end-game. I'm not interested in playing into that. I'd rather see how a better supercharging system could improve the Tundra 5.7 better than the Magnusson AND be CARB compliant....YMMV. I suppose the 64000 dollar questions will be what is the weak spot and what is the breaking point of this engine. hehe

I’m all about the preservation of our ozone and quality of life on this earth. In the world of business and industry, there are no winners. It’s a dog-eat-dog world out here. Big fish eat little fish, and bigger fish eat the big fish, and so on. My point is that, as the world evolves, so too do the challenges that comes with it. The foot travel generation had their fair share of issues. Then, came the horse/horse and carriage generation. Who had their fair share of issues.......leading up to our generation. I firmly believe that the space travel generation will have their fair share of issues too.

If we as consumers allow businesses, and or, the government to dictate to us what we must buy and how we must live, then we can only blame ourselves for whatever consequences that may, or may not arise.

With that said, I’m sure that Tundra owners would love to have the bragging rights of having not only the best damn truck in the world, but, the darn fast truck as well. Now, bring on them turbos:bikewheelie::mudding::oldglory:
