For my first mod to the truck I’m wanting to add a bed cover. I’d like to be able to carry a few more items with me everyday than I can right now since I don’t have enough back seat storage. I am not a fan of toolboxes in the bed of a truck. Had one on my last one. I’d like to just lock the tailgate and roll on. I would prefer a hard top that folds back. I’m not opposed to soft tops but I just haven’t found one that I really like that’s soft. I don’t like the covers that raise up either.

I have the Revolver X4 and it's great. It a low profile cover and all you need to do is roll it up if you need to use the bed space. I had an Undercover on my Tacoma and it was a good tight fitting cover but you had to remove it to use all the bed space. A PITA! The Revolver is weatherproof and when closed looks like a solid bed cover, no seams, no sags or lumps. It is expensive though. BAK will give you a discount if you ask for it.

I have the undercover hard folding cover. I love it. I also bought a cover so I could utilize the storage in the bed and not be afraid of thieves taking my belongings.

    Welcome from SE PA!
I have the BakFlip MX4. I love it. One feature that I really like is that you can fold it all the way up so it leans against the back of the cab giving virtually full access to put tall things in the bed.
As for locking the tailgate, I'm getting the Pop-N-Lock put on my Tundra. I've heard a lot of good things about it on this site.
Good luck with whatever you get!

+1 On the Retrax. Got the Retrax Pro MX XR with the Yakima racks and it's awesome.

I went with the BakFlip MX4. I've had it for almost a year now and no real complaints from me. I like that you can close the tailgate with the cover down (can't do that on some other models). Let us know which one you end up getting.

Budget is around 5-700 I plan on saving for it after Christmas is over with. I don’t mind waiting a little while for something better

My friend has the Retrax MX. It's pricey, but it is very nice! Had I not gone with my Diamondback SE, I probably would've gone with the Retrax. The Retrax supposedly supports about 500 lbs, about 100 lbs more than the Diamondback SE (the Diamondback HD can handle 1600 lbs). I'd recommend the Diamondback, but you said you weren't interested in covers that raise up. The Diamondback raises up from each end. It can always be removed to haul tall cargo, though, but the Retrax (or something similar) can just be rolled back for the purpose.

Oh, never mind my other post. The Retrax is close to $2K.

I've had the bakflip mx4 for just under a year. Drove it recently to Oregon in both rain and snow. Had all my gear under it and all was dry. The most leakage I've got is a table spoon of water in the rear corner near the gate. It's secure when the tailgate is locked but I was a Swat guy and have been to a few schools and the Practiced a lot at getting past locks. I easily slid a coat Hanger under the cover with a small hook in the end and pulled the release cable. That being said I plan to cut a small bit of plastic sheeting and secure it in front of the release cable to stop this from happening. I don't put anything like a gun back there, but when we are on the road, it's got all our food and luggage and no issues yet. It really depends on what you're willing to deal with in the "cons" department. The roll up cover often times cost you nearly a foot of your bed where it rolls up against the cab. On the other hand this cover does fold all the way up, but blocks your view out the back window. It is a hard cover and my kids run around on it, but I wouldn't put too much on it for fear of damaging it. I have some minor dents divits from who knows what (kids) so I'm careful not to just throw anything heavy up there. I like the cover and it just came down to me not wanting to lose part of the bed with a roll up style and not wanting to spend hugely for a diamond back or whatever they are called. I don't haul stuff on top of the cover.

    Just my 2¢

The plastic cover in front of the release cable sounds like a great idea. Please post pics of when you get it done so that I can “borrow” the idea.

With my crew max I ended up with the Bakflip Mx4 as well. They had a promotion and I got the free foldable tool box which was great. I purchased on Autoanything and they proce match to anyone on internet ebay/Amazon as long as it's the same model # and they price match for up to a year of purchase. They have great customer service.

I picked up a used Retrax for $400. I really like it. No leaks, lockable, easy to open and shut.

That was about my budget too, and looked and looked everywhere for quality and good reviews and bang for the buck. I ended up getting the Rugged Cover tri-fold for around 700 through Amazon and it is sharp and is working out awesome so far. I’ve even stood on it already to clear some snow off my roof!
