37s and NO regear

    I’ll be needing new tires soon so wanted some real life experience opinions.

    I have 35s right now and want to go to 37s BUT regearing isn’t an option at the moment.

    how many have run 37s and didn’t regear? How long did you drive like that? Did anything break?

    if it’s too much for the trans I’ll just stick to 35s even tho I really want 37s

    Get 37s, lots of people run them without regearing. Being at sea level you don't have any power loss either, people in the mountains (myself included) run 35s all the time with enough power loss from altitude that 37s at the sea level would be a rocket :rofl: but say goodbye to 6th assuming you could ever use it to begin with. I think you'll be fine.

    I don’t have 37s but I have had 35s before with no regear. It’s not the end of the world I’d say. I look at it this way, with stock 32” tires you have the 4.30 ratio. Running 4.30s with 37s you effectively have a 3.73 rear end.

    I don’t do much of anything. Lol my truck is a 2017 with 26k miles.

    it’s mostly city. Highway is when we go on trips with the fam.

    I've never had 35s. I made the jump straight to 37s (36.5s) so I can only speak to my experience with them. It was probably 100 miles before I regeared to 5.29s. There's no comparison between the two. It was super sluggish and just felt gutless before. With 5.29s, I got the power back. The truck is responsive and utilizes 5th and 6th gears. I think it's the best money I've spent on the truck.

    I ran 37’s with no regear for over a year and it was perfectly driveable on and off road. But towing was a pig, I had to give it considerably more gas to tow heavy loads. The truck has enough power for acceleration to get you out of the way of pretty much anything even with stock gears. You’re not gonna be winning any races but it still moves if you ask it to. Uphill climbs with a 4% grade or more you’re probably gonna drop to 4th gear. And moving to the passing lane you’ll always drop a gear or two for sure. You’re not gonna break anything for keeping stock gears, the teeth are bigger than 4.88’s or 5.29’s. You’ll break gears and axles regardless of your gears depending on your driving habits and recklessness. That said you’ll be putting stress on your transmission output as it’s taking on more stress to turn the driveshaft than if you regear properly.


    After regearing, I had stock acceleration pretty much back, I can overtake on the highway in 6th gear again and I recently did a 6% grade holding 67mph in 5th gear. So yeah, regearing is worth it but you’ll be fine until you do it.

    Around town it will be fine. Mine shifts in and out of 5th gear on the interstate with 37s going 75mph. I will probably go down to a 35 when these wear out instead of regearing.

    I have 37s on stock gears. If you're not towing, its completely fine.

    I have regeared multiple offroad rigs and have exprience with the difference between stock gears and aftermarket. Tundra does great with 37s - if you're not towing.

    Honestly doesn’t feel any different from stock gears and 35” tires.
    I’m pleasantly surprised by this.
    I think a big part is moving from an E load 35” to a D load 37” and the 37” only 3# heavier per tire.

    Also my dash mpg computer gives me the same averages as I had with 35”, but with the added diameter I slightly improved my mpg :laugh:

    It was much more work to get them to fit and clear (but a lot due to 0mm offset wheels).

    Definitely significantly more sluggish from stock to 35” but the change from 35” to 37” isn’t very noticeable.

    Then you hit the tow haul button and the sluggishness is gone :burnrubber:

    I tried 35s and 37s without regearing. Hated 37s. They didn't stay on 2 weeks before I went back down to 35s. IMO, the power loss and braking were far far away from what I was comfortable with. Truck felt like a slug that had just been salted.

    Now that I'm re-geared, and running 35s, it's as though I bought this truck off the lot with 35s. Can't wait to throw 37s on it (with a brake upgrade).

    As said by @eccracer104 the weight of the wheel and tire package plays a big role in how the power feels too. I’d just look for the lightest 37” tires you can find that you like, and Mount them on light weight wheels like methods or RRWs that are preferably under 30lbs a piece. Rotating mass is a definite power/efficiency/braking power killer. Rotating mass has a real measurable effect on HP and torque at the wheels on a dyno.

    You guys must drive fast. Sluggish - sure. I was expecting a bigger hit based on everyone's opinions and likely won't regear. City, highway, and off-road have all been fine (not mountainous). My input is get better pads since stopping is more important. EBC oranges are in my near future.

    I see a lot of people say they don’t do good with towing. What are you guys towing? The only thing I tow is a 10ft trailer with 3 quads

    I'm on 37s without re-gear. It really isn't all that bad that people say it is to be. I do eventually want to get my MPG back though, so re-gear is definitely in the works for the future along with front/rear lockers.

    Well I towed a 5k load from southern UT to Northern UT and trying to hold 65-70mph in a 80 zone was tough on the truck at a 6% grade. It was going from 4th to 3rd gear and didn’t wanna up shift so it was climbing the grade at high RPM’s. Keep in mind the elevation is about 4300 ft. That one sucked.

    Then another time I was towing a 9k load and the truck took the whole on-ramp to hit 50mph, obviously I was conscious of my RPM and wasn’t flooring it but you could really feel the Tundra didn’t like the tires or gears on that one.

    Like a few others have mentioned, the acceleration isn’t the biggest issue, the brakes and towing is the worst. Braking definitely is impacted and the heavier the worse it will be so not everyone’s setup will feel the same way.

    Then speaking on gas, I was averaging 11-12 hwy before regearing. Most recently I averaged 15-16 hwy after regearing. With an average of 68-75mph.

    OP go with rock warrior wheels and 37” load C ko2’s. Probably the lightest tire/wheel combo you’ll find with 37s. I think you will be fine if you don’t tow heavy. With that combo you’ll have a lighter wheel/tire combo than 99% of people with 35s. Especially those with the 20x10s, 20x12 wheels lol.

    My dash averages 11.7-12.3mpg with adjustment nets me ~13mpg (confirmed with resetting trip odo).

    I just regeared to 5.29s. I was running 35s on stock gears and couldn't believe the shifting difference between stock gears and 5.29 gears. It feels and shifts so much better. I just put my 37s on yesterday and didn't get to test them yet, but I'm sure it will feel great, too.

    I like to tow a lot and was tired of taking off the 35s and putting on the stock wheels and tires for trips. The truck ran like crap when I would tow on stock gears and 35s, so I would always go back to stock for long trips. If you want to tow or haul anything, I would regear. If you're not doing anything serious and just want the look, I wouldn't spend the money.

    @fisherman951 i’m guessing, if you’re not able to get new gears, you’re also not in a position to swap wheels-? What wheels are you running now?
