I’m onto the tires now since I got the shocks sorted out. I drive ton for work 800-1000ish miles /week so gas mileage is on my mind a bit. Most likely going with ridge grapplers on either size. I’ve searched on here for good amount and some said lost ton with 295 and some said only .5miles per gallon. Difference in weight is about 10lb. Sounds pretty big to me.

Tires are going on TRD Pro wheels so it doesnt sound like I need to do extensive trimming on either tires. Prolly none on 285 other than taking front flap off.

I know most of people here loves 295 on their trucks but I know people out there running 285.

Talk me into/out of which size to get

If you travel a lot, go with the 285. You’re talking less than a .5” difference in height and less than a .5” in width. Ultimately, OD and weight play a huge roll in performance and fuel economy. The 10lb weight difference and smaller OD is a big difference that you would certainly feel if you compared them back to back.

I have 295 Toyo tires and wish I would have done the 285 nittos. They 10 pounds per tire is definitely something noticeable.

Another option is the 295 p rated terra grapplers

I had terra grappler on other truck and I didn’t like it too much. I liked Toyo AT2 but those are heavy.

I’m gonna be debbie downer here, but if you drive 45k miles a year do you really want to get bigger tires? You’re killing your mpg which will add up at that mileage.

Toyo 35x12cost me 3 mpg on the freeway.

A 295 is almost 35x11.5 which isnt far off

1000 miles a week??!! god damn i would just get a prius.. assuming you have to drive a truck why not just leave it stock to maximize fuel economy .. It’s not like you even stop long enough to admire it or go off road.. Having said all that I can only speak on my ridge grapplers in 285/70/18.bought them exactly for that 10lb saving.. love em 7k in.. great in snow and rain and quiet as hell at 80 mph.. Plus they look swiggity sweet

As long as I get around 14ish. I’d be happy. It’s fullsize truck after all. I’m not expecting much. My buddy tried to talk me into buying Colorado with diesel this time but if I’m driving truck, I’d rathwr drive something I like lol

I had Nitto Ridge grapplers in 285/70. They looked pretty good but I always thought they looked kind of on the skinny side. Went to the same tires in a 35x12.50 and I’m finally happy with the looks of it. I went from 15mpg to 13’s with the 285’s. Now I’m mid 11’s with the 35’s.

I was in the same boat and decided on the 285's. The height and width difference is minimal but the rotational weight difference is significant.

Skinny side is not something I’d like to hear. Originally I was going to get 305/65/18.. not sure it’ll clear uca with +60 offset

You can do 1.25 wheel spacers to clear the uca.

I would get 275/70’s. Its not much taller but won’t punish the mpg too bad.
Anyone who says they only lost .5 mpg with bigger tires is just silly

I went through the whole debate man lol. The pros and cons between the 285’s and 295’s. I had very quickly realized I should’ve went 295’s for what I was looking for. After a few months I stumbled across a great deal on the 35’s so I ended up going that route. The +60 offset doesn’t do them any favors on them looking skinnier. I’ve seen some pics of 285’s on like a 18x9 +25 offset that look pretty good. I’ve probably got some more pictures of the 285’s if you want

FWIW I spoke to Darren at Boss4x4 about this very same dilemma, and he told me the 285 would fit no problem but maybe need to remove the mud flaps. He said 295 would likely be too close to the UCA and may also require further trimming. This is strictly concerning the stock TRD Offroad and Pro (2017 and earlier) wheels.
However, I've seen people on this site that say they run 295's on the stock +60 wheels and have no issues. So...who knows until you try.

I like my TRD Pro wheels I just got. Going for OEM + look so no go on 9” wheels although I sort like ray 10 wheels. I have my eyes on 19 trd pro wheels too. My truck came with 20’s. I wasn’t into it one bit.

Man add me to the list of trying to make the same decision. I've got the stock trd off road rims (which I think are the same offset as yours?) And definitely want to put the 295s on them. I'm hoping with my leveling kit I can get away with them without a BMC or cutting the inside of the wheel well.

I would go with the one you like the best and not base it on minute advantages. The weight difference between the Toyo 295/70 and the RG 285/70 is 6lbs. The diameter difference is 5/16 of an inch. I went back and forth over these same two tires for weeks. In the end I simply chose the one I liked better and I'm happy I did. If you're driving a lot, these Toyos are pretty loud on the freeway. Don't know about the RG. Making the jump to a 285 or 295 is going to be noticeable coming from stock but between the two, the differences are negligible.
Edit (Trying to upload some pics but they're huge)

    Nice,

I had them on my 2016 Tacoma and when I got the Tundra they only had SR8's so I got em! I would have got the 10's if they had them at the time, :spending:
