Talon’s is what I went with. Very solid.

 

I went with RCI since I wanted to add skid plates. Quick delivery, and fairly straightforward install, although for the skid plate install I had to figure out how to "manually" lower the air dam (hold "up" on the windshield wiper stick after turning off the engine - how James Bond is that?) and the mid-bolts on the two-piece engine skid plate needed to be pushed back instead of forward.

Question. Those buying plates, are you getting front and back? My Front plate is coming in tomorrow and I’m having second thoughts if I should have ordered the back too.

 

On the 3rd Gen it’s just 1 plate for your cats as post #214 above is showing.

Anything mounted in front would be a skid plate if you so choose (post #215) and anything mounted behind would be transmission protection or such armor for general off road protection.

 

Now they will just saw through the cross frame lol joking

 

Then it goes from a misdemeanor to a felony

 

Lol ya Z it would be a crazy expensive repair. Soon they will just start stealing these plates and reselling them

 

I just installed the Talon shield. I noticed it does not have a cut out for a drain plug it covers. I assumed it would be at the logo cut out but is not. How have you addressed this?

Looks like the only drain it covers is for the transmission. I had the plate off for rustproofing and that is all could see. Correct me if I am wrong please. Guess I will remove the plate when it needs servicing. At least it is not covering the plug for oil.

 

Does the Talin cover the oil drain plug or is the plug accessible?

 

+1 for talon shield. Just installed it last week.

Talon sells additional security bolts with a special key which I never seen anywhere, and I work in physical security field, and have all sorts of special security screws and keys. There's no way bad guys will simply unscrew this shield.

I was skeptical about aluminum as it's a soft metal, but this shield is beefy! Cutting 1/4in aluminum with grinder is not an option as I've read it'll clog up the cut wheel fast. So you got Sawzall, but it will be very tough finding angle to cut it off... Maybe will take an additional 10 min of loud cutting if at all possible

It will not be easy to remove this shield...

 

Just ordered the Talon. Now I just need a truck to put it on. Maybe two more weeks. I'm too old to learn patience.

 

Did you have to cut off the retention tab on TRD skid plate to do the install?

 

You can just bend it out of the way. Bends pretty easily.

 

I also have this question. I have a cat protector installed and want to do a TRD Skid plate.

 

Not sure which cat protector this is in reference to, but I have the Talon and TRD skid plate. Works fine. Just have to bend the tab on the TRD plate out of the way.

 

@GordoS: can you please comment on why you chose the RCI? and if convenient what their model or just a screenshot from their website for the ones you used? Thanks bunches

 

Thanks to both you and @4wd TRD PRO. I was able to get my Valhalla cat shield installed without much trouble. I ended up just bending the retention tab out of the way.

 

I ordered a full set of plates from RCI with their Black Friday discount. Talon’s site said “Out of stock”

 

For those wondering, the quality is very good overall. I got a batch 1 plate which has appears to have some fitment issues with the TRD pro skid plate and the square cutout doesn’t appear to align with anything. The powder coating leaves a bit to be desired. It was missing coverage around some of the bolt holes. It was also scratched during shipping. It’s not a big deal since I went with aluminum but I would consider getting it powder coated locally if you want it done.

In summary: I would buy it again but I would have skipped the powder coating and pentagon bolts. You can only use two of the bolts with TRD pro skid plate.

 

@GordoS: did you have the OEM TRD skid plate? My 1794 has it. I'm wondering if you would recommend getting the whole RCI kit which replaces the OEM skid? I'd then sell the OEM skid. Does the RCI cover the engine and transfer case well? thanks

 

You have two shields shown. One is obviously the cat shield, but I’m not sure of the other. I have the Limited OR with the TRD skid plate and looking for one Togo with it.

 

I have a 2020 with the V8. It has 4 cats.
