Not sure why Toyota didn’t include the oil drain door in the 3rd gen ones…I have a set also and get concerned that one of these days the oil tech’s at the dealership will strip one of the bolts, round out the heads or something of that sort while they are servicing the area.

After installing Talons Cat skid plate shield I cant imagine a thief looking under a truck that has one of these types of shields saying they want a challenge. The shield is legit and looks pretty impressive under the truck. Not my truck, but tristans video shows one being installed, im sure its been posted before

BTW I went and got a Talons unit. 1/4" alum, covers what you need and nothing more. Couple that with an RCI skidplate and its good.
I would have went with an RCI transcover put they want 150 extra for wings that cover the cats. The Talon unit is the same thickness and does the complete job.
Saved me a few bucks too.

Bilstein 5100's, Morimoto gen 2 XB headlights and fog lights, TRD sway bar and skid plates. Nothing else needed!
IMO the question of whether or not to use steel or aluminum comes down to how much you perceive you need to protect the underbelly. Steel is obviously stronger, so if youre doing gnarly trails I would opt for steel. I personally dont do crazy difficult trails, and the strike to my underside is usually fairly minimal, so I chose aluminum. Not really for technical specs, but more for price. If you are doing true crawling, I would suggest steel. If youre a weekend warrior, I like aluminum.

Weight of the plates makes a difference aluminum will be lighter. Less concern about corrosion with aluminum.

Provides good protection against hitting the oil pan and losing the engine.

With my other vehicle I had a 1/4” thick aluminum plate on it and hit a chunk of ice that fell off a truck on the highway. Dented the plate and pushed it up to touch the oil pan. Later I took the plate off and straightened it best I could and reinstalled it. That plate saved my engine that day.

I think it is more about protecting the drive train in any situation.

I came across this in the news today:

7 trucks were flipped on their sides to provide better access to the cats! This happened in Puslinch Ontario at some sort of a set. They used a piece of equipment on set to flip the trucks.

I am not too sure how the cat plates will hold up to this type of aggression.

I guess the moral of the story is don’t leave your backhoe parked next to your truck!

If you can flip a truck without anyone caring I doubt a cat plate is going to matter. Maybe they would taking it with them so they can recycle it.

Only way to stop this madness is to go after the guys buying the old units from the crooks.

Good luck. They're overseas. Everyone thinks it's the local scrap yards buying them from meth heads, but that is a tiny fraction. When they bust the rings they're finding hundreds loaded up in cargo containers to be shipped out. It's organized and not local. You could shutdown every scrap yard on the continent and it wouldn't make a dent.

Picked up a Valhallas Shield (https://valhallasshields.com/) while I was down in Houston for the weekend. Got it painted, and will be installing tomorrow AM.

I can’t speak for the other products mentioned here but this far exceeded my expectations. High quality and finish all the way around. And for a better price! Highly recommended this to anyone here looking. And no I’m not getting paid to post this. Just want to give credit where credit is due.

Talons are 1/4" Plate. Not bad for the price. I purchased one recently and got it in less than seven days.
    Lucky? Maybe.

The RCI trans-shield covers the area and then want an extra 150.00 for these wings to protect the cats.
Gets more expensive than some other ones. Do love their aluminum front skids though. Great quality.

we have a hole for the oil drain plug.

The Oil filter is up above the cross member. I was able to reach around the plate and get to it as if I was going to remove it.

An oil door was not going to really help due to the location of the filter above the cross member. Any oil is going to pour right on that cross member and make a mess. Toyota did put a little catch pan under the oil filter that you can run a hose to to help reduce the mess.

Here is a photo showing the oil filter. You can see the little plastic catch pan and nipple below it.

Like i said, unless you use a hose to drain the oil from the catch can you are going to have a mess regardless due to the nipple being right over the cross member.

Another point is our skid plate is a two piece design, so 4 bolts and you can take the front section off, and have all the room in the world to work.

I am about to install this Talons garage cat plate. I ordered the security bolts, but I have been reading in other forums that some people are buying longer separate bolts for the connections up front that connect the cat plate and the stock TRD skid plate. What has been your experience installing these? Again, people are using longer bolts because they need to get the two plates, cat plate and TrD stock skid plate flush with each other. I don’t want any rattling or rubbing underneath there.

The Talons shield is designed to attach under the TRD skid and the supplied hardware, including the security bolts, do that just fine. The Cat shield is mainly held by the 3 longer bolts in the frame, 2 in the back, one in the front. Then the other 2 smaller bolts hold the TRD skid in place. Those 2 bolts go through the Talons shield into the threaded TRD skid mounting holes. I just did this install last week and it is a piece of cake. You don't need any different hardware than what they provide. See post #27 and on down in this thread.

when you state that you should remove the stock TrD skid plate off before installing the Talon, do you mean fully removing the skid plate, or removing the back two bolts and letting it hang down to sneak in the Talon cat plate?

TRD skid needs to be fully removed. First, you need to remove it to bend that tab down so that when you reinstall it over the Talons shield it will sit flush. And second, the TRD skid needs to be out of the way so you can install that Talons shield right front hanger bolt through the frame. With the TRD skid in the way you can't get in there. Some of the other lighter duty cat shields apparently don't have that bolt. But you need it with the heavy duty Talons.

Follow my instructions... remove the TRD skid, install the Talons loosely on the 3 provided hanger bolts (I got the security versions), then temporarily install the 2 bolts into the threaded holes in the frame where the rear skid mounts. For this you can just use the original bolts from the TRD skid if you want. Snug them up to locate the Talons shield where it needs to be and then fully tighten the 3 main hanger bolts. Then remove those 2 smaller bolts and reinstall the TRD skid using the optional provided security bolts in those 2 holes through both the TRD skid and the Talons shield. The TRD skid actually provides better security by concealing the front Talons shield hanger bolt.

One thing to keep in mind... the TRD skid needs to come off for oil changes so if you use the security bolts in the 2 holes at the rear of the skid make sure to have the special bit with you when you go for service if you don't do this stuff DIY.

Lot's of great posts in here and wanted to add mine. I installed my transmission skid plate / cat cover from @Talon2006 Talon's Garage and really like it. I did the powder coated steel which is currently on sale as their powder coating is a new process but mine is flawless. Shipping was 3 days and $35 dollars and arrived very well packed. I have an RCI engine skid plate in powder coated steel and the quality is just as good. There is not difference between the two in quality. I would have bought both from Talon's but didn't realize how crappy the Toyota "off road skid plate" was on my $3k premium trd package. My non-trd 3rd gen tacoma had a steel skid plate FFS. I live near RCI so I quickly grabbed an engine skid plate from them but am super pleased with the Talon's product as well. Highly recommend!
