I’m looking to get into a tundra and found a new 2021 that has been sitting waiting on a recall. Is 2021 build quality live up to 2020 and previous years. I keep hearing build quality issues on 2022 tundras and other brand trucks(f150 etc) and didn’t know if it is the new design issue or more the sign of the times and material availability and should look for a pre- Covid era truck

I have to say I am very happy with my 8/26/21 built SR5. Is yours waiting on a steering rack?

My 2021 has been solid so far at 10 months ownership and 6k miles, built 6/21. Only recall notice I had was for the steering rack (which I was not affected by) for trucks built or that had a replaced steering rack between 8/21 and 10/21. There also appears to be a service campaign for reprogramming of the system that automatically calls out to 911 during an accident - something along the lines of dispatch couldn't hear anything from inside the truck during the call. I haven't called the dealership about it yet.

One thing that makes me very happy is that the interior has ZERO rattles or creaks - to me that says quality. I've pulled a bunch of trim and all the door panels out for the various projects I have done and noticed little foam pieces and rubber rings around many of the fasteners and contact points to stop rattles. Our 2020 Highlander had various plastic interior trim pieces creak and rattle from day one, which was pretty disappointing but I'm getting old and sensitive about stuff like that.

I have heard concerns about "COVID era" manufactured vehicles but I haven't seen anything that has concerned me yet.

Haven’t bought it yet, I can’t justify paying 40 for a 1-2 year old truck with 50k miles and have been back and forth on getting a new 22. Every time I feel like pulling the trigger I see another post about rattles, sensors going bad or alerts popping up about needing to go to the dealership. I found a new 2021 that the dealer hasnt sold yet because they said it has a recall on it and have been waiting on parts for months but wanted to ear from other people with 2021 before putting a deposit down.

2021 had/has less issues than the 2022 due to the new design and all the QC and tweaks, fixes needed on the new model. And if you think 40K is too much for a 2021, then 2022 pricing is going to be disappointing. You will be in the 50-70k range depending on that trim and options to want.

    Too many, but not enough....
Bought my 21 December 29, 2020 and have had 0 issues in 16k miles except I have gotten to know the attendant at my nearby gas station a little too well...

21 also has a halogen headlight recall if you are looking at an SR5. Used market is kind of crazy, I would go 19 year model so you don’t have the shark fin on top. Makes for a tight fit if you plan to lift the truck and still fit inside normal size garage

Bought my 21 Nightshade March 21 and now with 10k miles. Battery blinker light came on like 3 months ago. When I got to the dealership it went away. Everything checked out. Other than that I'd take my 21 over 22 any day.

If you found a new 2021, you better snap it up or wait for the 2023 or 2024 model to avoid new design glitches.

Bought mine Nov 21 and took delivery in Dec 21. My build date was Oct 21, and I've had no issues other than the recall notices (PS rack did not affect me) and the other recall is a software update for the Connect system.

I would say the 21 is not going to be inexpensive (in comparison to previous years), and the Gen 3 will be worse... So, buy what makes you happy and don't worry about what the rest of us think. I'm not trying to be rude, but you have to make a choice between better gas mileage, newer tech, body style, etc. of the gen 3, or go with the older (classic if you will) v8, tech and body style.

All trucks are hard to secure at this point, so go after the truck you want and make it happen if it is within your means...

I bought my 2021 in April 2021, a little more than a year ago. No problems. I love it.

I did exactly that in 2021 when I got my 18, I will never regret it.
