Hi I’m new to the forum just trying to get advice. I ordered and purchased a 2021 Tundra Platinum 4x4 crewmax in June this year and in October I started getting an abnormal clicking noise from the engine. Long story short it was at the dealership for a bit over 2 months and they replaced the engine for a failed bearing on the piston rod. I got the truck back and in under 24 hours I had to send it back. Now they’re saying it’s the cam shaft actuator that went bad. I spoke with a Toyota rep today and she basically told me to file a lemon law claim. I want to keep my truck but I’m very skeptical of the dealerships workmanship and don’t want to keep having to take the truck back for repairs. Any advice? Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear the difficulty you are having with your Tundra. I would heed the advice from the Toyota rep and file a claim so you can get your funds back and look for another truck. Sounds like you’ll have ongoing problems with this individual truck.

The problem I have with that is the current state of the vehicle market, supply chain, etc I’d be cash in hand with nothing available for purchase

    Sorry bout your misfortune.

Can you put it on Toyota Corp. to help find you another 2021 Tundra?

Good suggestion… ask the Rep if they can help find you another truck.

Or start taking to another dealership if you're concerned about a specific locations craftsmanship. It's possible that the original issue was misdiagnosed.

Lemon law is a fairly long process, be patient as much as possible. Get up to speed on the law procedures for your state and get an attorney involved if you get a run around from Toyota. Best of luck.

This may suck, but here’s my dad advice. Take the refund, walk away. Find something reliable that will hold its value (almost everything will right now). Wait for your truck, it will be there, not next week, month or even a year but it will be there. Spend your money on what you want, on what you need. Don’t panic and overpay because you want something new that’s not "yours".

What dealer is the one in question for ‘poor craftsmanship’?

but agree with others, after rep/dealer to locate you another 2021

I had this happen on a 2002 Mustang Gt. It made a real bad rattle at 2000 rpm under light load. It was assumed to be out of spec piston to cyl clearances.

They swapped the engine. Same exact thing.

They then changed the engine timing a bit at the driving conditions (cold, light load, 1st gear) and noise went away.

Longer story...but the car ate window motors like candy, and needed a rear diff job in under 12k miles. I was on good terms with dealer and they let me swap straight over for an f150.

Typically when something like this occurs, the dealer tech will work with a company rep (field service engineer or equivalent) and they decide some troubleshooting efforts. if these don't uncover an easy solution they jump right to swapping the engine. The send the engine back to the factory for a warranty teardown and analysis.

In your situation if the same noise persists in two new engines then clearly the engine isn't the issue. There is no way your luck is that bad that two consecutive, brand new off factory floor, engines were defective.

If the cam shaft phasor actuator is bad there should be some tell tale engine codes set. Kinda skeptical.

Other noise sources are loose brake lines along the engine "firewall".
    Fuel injectors can be noisy.
Toyota overhead cam engines are in general noisy engines.
Need to run the engine without the belt to rule out front end accessory drive components.

What are the conditions for the clicking noise?

    idle only?
    Any engine lights?

Thanks for all the advice. So I did contact Toyota and requested that they start the process to replace the truck. According to the rep it’ll take 30-45 days to review my case and give me a response. I’ll let ya’ll know what happens.

No indication of their intentions that’s what the 30-45 day wait is for

    Just a quick update:
According to the techs at the dealership the cause of the clicking noise was a failed bearing on a piston rod.

I have been in contact with Toyota and they were kind enough to work with me and provide me with a replacement truck. The downside is that I purchased the 2021 to avoid the new power train and with the way things worked out I’ll end up with the 2022.

Stay away from the 2022. Let them work the bugs out first or you will getting rid of one problem truck for another!

So… have you decided what you are going to do? Have them fix the 2021 and keep it or go for the newer 2022?

I have a 2021 Crew Max ran into a guy at my local Home Depot. Guy loved the truck (had a F150 before) and has not had an issue with the Gen 3 Tundra. Looked like a very nice truck in MGM from my perspective.

The trucks were side by side and my 2.5 Gen Tundra was noticeably larger than the 2022 version. Could be a good thing or badd thing depending on what you really want.

I also have an intermittent ticking noice from my 21 with 7K miles. Guess I will have the dealer check on next oil change.
