Couple question about the hard tri-fold tonneau cover ordered through the dealership for a 2020 Tundra TRD Sport (5 1/2’ bed).

    1. Does the tonneau fold against the rear window to allow full bed access?

    2. Does Toyota make these themselves or get them from a 3rd party vendor?

    Thanks

    1. No. you loose one of the 3 sections of the cover.
    2. very high quality made they are the RuggedCoverII. full metal on both sides with some insulation board inside. also... the LED lights on it are dumb...

Hmm that’s kind of disappointing, might be a deal breaker for me, it would be really nice to gain full access to the bed when needed. I wonder why they call it a tri-fold if it only folds twice?

Forgot one more question, do you still have access to the sliding bed rail tie downs?

Hey I was just at the dealership yesterday picking up my new Tundra and noticed another one which had the tonneau installed, it looks like the tonneau might be a little small as it barely covered the bed side walls, maybe 1/2" coverage max, also the rear never overlapped at all, do you get much water in there when it rains?

I have the OEM RuggedCoverII on my 2019 1794 Crewmax. I had the Rugged Cover (I bought it aftermarket) on my 2016 Tundra Limited Crewmax as well. It is a solid no-nonsense cover that is easy to remove if you need full bed access. Water leakage on my 2016 was minimal (usually just at the corners if water was sprayed on it during washing). I've had no leakage yet on my 2019. Depends on your requirements. You have full use of the bed rails with the Rugged cover, but you lose access to the bed stake pockets. Most of the ones that allow access to both cost much more. I don't need the bed stakes, so the Rugged works perfect for me. If you plan on using a rack, then the Rugged is a bad choice. That said, I highly recommend the Rugged cover. It's rock solid and will last for years.

Is there any difference buying the oem one and the premium rugged cover aftermarket?

I think they're the same. Toyota doesn't even re-brand it, it still says "Rugged". They probably just mark the price up more. I got mine thrown in at cost because they made me wait too long for service when I had the tires swapped out...that's the only reason I got it through the dealership.

I got the Rugged on my 2016 with the truck and it is still doing fine. In the past I always had good luck with Extang. They have a tri fold that will fold twice in any direction including opening back and front at the same time and looks easy to remove and carry.
    Good luck with the search

I live in Canada and got the OEM hard tri-fold, mine was re-branded, basically a Toyota sticker, it didn’t say Rugged anywhere on it but looks very similar. It was an extremely poor install from the dealer, basically got home, removed it and reinstalled properly. The rubber trim all along the side rails was folded under and pinched creating gaps where water could get in, also one of the side rails was missing the end cap so water could enter the bed there as well. Dealer ordered end cap and promised to call when it arrived but that was over 2 months ago and haven’t heard a thing.

Aside from the poor dealer service and poor install I would rate the cover 3/5 stars.

The main problem with it is the latching mechanism, it’s awkward to close it and securely latch. The latch bar is located about 10” forward of the rear of the cover so it takes quite a bit of force to latch it securely, you pretty much have to slam it shut to get the latch to catch, the latching mechanism secures both the rear and middle panels to the bed so I’m thinking that is why the latch bar is positioned so far forward.
This problem forces you to close the tonneau before closing the tailgate so you can ensure that it is latched securely, then when you close the tailgate the rubber trim at the rear corners will occasionally fold over and allow water entry. I had to trim the rubber at the rear corners to mitigate this but it still happens on occasion.

    Pros:
    Attractive appearance
    Very durable

    Cons:
    Poor latching mechanism
Difficult to close and latch securely
Poorly thought out rubber seals and gaskets

Wow thank you for explaining all that, I’m now debating buying an over the rail type cover, I know it won’t sit flush but might be another option to look at.
