2019 Tundra SR5 trade to 2020 Tundra Limited Premium for $7k? Talk me into it or out of it.

    GOT ONE!

2020 Tundra DC Limited, white. Local dealer had one just in. They gave me a $3,900 difference in price. My trade was $39,800 and their sale price was $43,700. I think that's a HELL of a deal. They also are going to swap out my TRD rear sway bar and step bars on my old and install on the 2020.

Have the chance to trade in my 2019 SR5 Tundra with 23k miles for a 2020 Tundra with the Limited Premium Package with 2 miles and MSRP of $49,300. I have a 2019 Tundra with the SR5 and TRD Off Road package I picked up back in Jan 20 for $35k even with 7400 miles on it and MSRP of $42,300. It was a certified used and came with a 6yr/100k powertrain warranty. Previous owner was the KS Speedway. It was one of their pace cars and a demo and lot car so I imagine it wasn't driven all so lightly over the first 7400 miles of it's life. I've put over 15k on it and have towed our pontoon to the lake and back every weekend in the summer. Treat it pretty good overall and really have no reason to get rid of it. I owe $19k on the note. When I bought it I was kind of in a bind as I had a crazy $8,500 offer on a 2003 Tahoe that I figured was only worth $5k so I took it and this was the first Tundra I saw and thought the price was good and liked the color so grabbed it.

I didn't ask the dealer about getting a trade price on mine or sale price on the new. Told them I wanted a new loan on a new vehicle to be $24k which would essentially be $5k to trade my used for a brand new. They came back and won't budge on a $26k new note, a $7,000 difference. So is it worth $7,000 to trade a used SR5 in for a new Limited???

With the crazy price of used trucks and having a second car to drive I thought maybe I'd sell it outright as the KBB value is almost $40k. I put up and ad on FB, Craigslist, Cars.com and Autotrader.com, and priced it for $38,500. No real hits yet in over a week. If this Tundra was on the lot back in January I probably would have got it instead. It's a 2020 Limited with the premium package.

What this will get me over my SR5 is:
Higher retailing truck which should mean higher resale, $49k vs $42k.
Leather heated seats - I have cloth now. Thought I would be happy but they stain very easy.
Leather steering wheel. Stupid but I don't have one. Really miss the one I had in the Tahoe.
Climate control - dual zone. SR5 has hot/cold high/low single zone dials. I thought I would like the simplicity but I'm constantly playing with it to keep temps the same.
Remote start - Wife's Pilot, my Scag Vride and Honda Rancher take up our 2 car garage so I park outside all year. Temps are 0-100 degrees. Remote start would be a huge plus
Push button start. I'm fine with the SR5's key start
Keyless entry. With the SR5 I need to use the fob to get in and out. Limited has it where you touch the door handles to lock and unlock. Kind of neat.
Power rear sliding window. SR5 does not have one and I have to crawl back to open/close it. I like to run around with windows down so would use the a lot.
Power auto up/down windows. SR5 only has driver's side auto up/down.
Blind spot and rear traffic monitors. Never had them so not too concerned.
    Better radio. SR5 radio sucks.

I would also be getting 5 free oil change/tire rotations which are about $100 a pop.
I'd also be getting new tires on a new vehicle. My current tires have about 10k of life left and a new set runs around a grand.
I have a chip in my windshield now. That would be gone.
I have a bad 4 inch scratch over the rear wheel well. That would be gone.
Dealer will let me keep my TRD rear sway bar and all weather mats on the new truck.
Going on a day trip tomorrow to Arkansas and back. Dealer said an extra thousand miles won't matter on the trade in.
Insurance goes up a whole $48/year

I know I should sell private party because I'll get more than trading in but I can't find another Tundra with this package within 500 miles. In KS I only pay sales tax on the trade difference of $7,000. If I sold private party I would have to convince them to let me take them to a dealer and then convince the dealer to let them take the SR5 in as a "trade" and resell it to the private party buyer to save on the sales tax. If I sold it outright and didn't do that I would be hosed on sales tax, to the tune over over $4,000.

I have the weekend to think about it.

Here's what I currently drive. MSRP was $42,300.

Here's what an extra $7,000 would get me. MSRP is $49300

Just remember the 2020 does not have a transmission cooler. That's if you tow a lot.

Your post needs clarification. How much are they giving you for trade in?
How much are they selling you the truck for?

Maybe some? I have a 2020 that has a trans cooler. Was listed under the “tow package” or something like that when I bought it.

It's not the trade in or price of the new that matters to me. It's the balance of my loan. My new balance will be $7,000 more. So they could have given me 40k on the trade and charged 47k on the new one or given me 33k on the trade and charged 40k on the new one. Only thing that matters is the difference between what I owe now and what I will owe if I get it, $7,000 more.

Sounds like you are paying 7k for leather, auto climate control and a shark fin antenna.

Unless you are totally loaded, this sounds like a total waste of 7k

It's some kind of "cooling puck" thing now rather than a legit cooler.

These are oversimplifications. You detailed the issues with your current truck (tires, scratch, etc.) and listed the upgrades you like in the Limited. Try figuring out how much those upgrades would cost to add to your current truck, the cost of repairing the issues with your truck, then go from there. Yes, $7k is a lot for the upgrade but the new features may make it worthwhile to you personally. But you might be able to add all of those upgrades for less than $7k and have a paid for truck that much sooner.

$7k more than your current loan balance or $7k more than the original loan amount? Don't forget the monthly payments you have been making since buying the SR5. That adds up to quite a bit.

My 2 applicable cents. I didn’t want auto climate. Was actually bummed to see the 20 pro I wanted had it. Now I’d never want to be without it. Auto 72 on a hot day, Auto 76 when it’s cold. It’s just like being in the house except I don’t have the wife trying to go cheap with the thermostat!

Op will be gaining resale equity on the back end in the future, so the 7k isn't wasted on just the upgrades.
Plus, he has a brand new truck that hasn't been rode hard on the track.
If the 7k plus interest over the life of the loan doesn't hurt your family's budget I would jump on the deal.

    .02 given :hattip:

The words “equity” and “vehicle” should never be used unless talking about a true classic from days past.

You can add remote start for around $4-500 (Fortin w/2 way remote), leather seat covers and seat heaters if you want them for about $1,000 if I remember correctly (Clazzio), New tires as you said for about $1,000. Get the chip in the windshield filled...its something like $60 a chip. You can wrap the steering wheel if thats your thing with a faux leather cover for something like $100 too, again if I remember correctly. Add another $1,000 or less (depending on how big an audio guy you are) to do a new head unit and a sub......You won't get dual zone climate....but you're into it maybe say 4,500-5,000 total....if you want to spend that much. That's better than 7k....but thats just me. I have an 08 with 140k and love it. Did remote start with long range remote and it will run for 30min vs the 15 min cutoff from factory toyota. It also won't shut down when you open a door like OEM toyota. Love it in the winter. If you want all those features and don't want the hassle of doing it yourself or having someone else do it / paying for it....then you can trade in and get the limited. Your money sir, do what your gut and wallet say yes to...and its still a Tundra so wohoooo!

Agree, I should of said resale value.

Still, with the upgrades he would be gaining plus the higher resale AND not owning a truck that spent 7,400 miles on a track o_O

Done deal in my book, IF his budget allows of course.

I’m not one to upgrade vehicles but in this case you already have a fairly low balance on your current loan and the market is super inflated so I think this is a good move for you. I had the opportunity to buy a 2016 with 25k miles and the price I was going to pay was considered “average” trade in on NADA. The brand new one cost me right at 7.5k more for the same vehicle. Get the upgraded features and have the piece of mind of a new truck that you can put the dings in and know what to expect. This is a no brainer.

Also, it looks like you upgrade to leather, power seats on both, auto climate, sonar and cross traffic, power rear sliding window, I think.

You can get all those done aftermarket, but not factory quality with warranty

At the end of the day, It's all if is worth it for you.

I would do it. For 7,000 bucks you have a brand new truck with more goodies.

7k will get you a nice shed. Move the ATV and the Scag. Get a real remote starter for your truck, and some nice seat covers.

now if you wanted a Crewmax or something, that would be a different story.

SR5 has everything a person needs in a truck and nothing they don't. Save the $7k for paying off your current truck and modding it.
