I recently installed the bilstein 6112’s (too setting) and threw on some TOYO MT’s 295/70/18, cut the skid plate to avoid rubbing and all is good with no problems in 2WD, but when I put it in 4x4 a grinding noise comes from the front drive side.. some people on past forums said could be traction control but was wondering if there’s any other possibilities. Thanks.

Sounds like you need to visit the dealership. That’s what I’d do.

Sound like a locking hub issue to me. Not fully locking. Does the Tundra use electric or vacuum for the hubs? not sure.

Sounds like maybe the CV got extended during install and is not seated properly

That wouldn't be influenced by 4x or not, that would be all the time.

This is what came to my mind.

How does the angle look? Is the boot scrunched together?

Curious about this too. All my hub vacuum issues on my Ford started when I leveled the truck. Maybe related, maybe not...but could be the same issue here.

From what I have researched toyota doesnt use locking hubs. One axle is disconnected between the wheel and the differential and the other disconnect is at the transfer case. The axle disconnects with a shift fork type design.

My ptevious truck was a 2010 f150 and the only issue I had with the 4 wheel drive was a bad vacuum check valve causing low vacuum to one of the hubs. It took me quite a while to diagnose, but only a $12 check valve to fix!

Yeah, had to look it up myself. Axles spin but the front drive shaft does not until both actuators are engaged (one in the front diff and one in the xfer box). I would look to see if any thing happened to the actuators (visual) but sounds like a CV joint.

So I ended up taking it to my local Toyota to have them tell me the passenger side axle is snapped at the joint. That did not sound right to me because the issues would be worse if it was actually snapped, So I ended up taking it to my wife’s dealership and had the master tech look at it there to tell me the tires were rubbing on the sway bar and just need wheel spacers to avoid hitting the sway bar. Would the wheel spacers really solve my problem? Thoughts?

Is the noise constant when in motion or tied to steering wheel input? If you can hear the noise going straight down the road that second diagnosis would be incorrect. Not saying you aren't hitting the sway bar but you would only hear the noise while the tire is making that contact, not the entire time you are in 4x4. You should be able to see contact marks if the noise is associated with tire rub.

Yea agree with the above post. If there was contact to sway bar, 2 or 4wd should make no difference. There is a sway bar relocation bracket kit available that moves the swaybar forward slightly to gain clearance, but im not sure that's the problem.

So I just got done with my appointment at tire Rama and they lifted it and finally cracked the case. So what’s happening is that my bilstein 6112 kit did not come with differential spacers and the differential bolts which I need because right now my cv axles are sitting at an unorthodox angle which when 4x4 is engaged it is pressing against the knuckles and the spacers/ bolts will put the angle back to normal. Thoughts?

Well the diff drop is simple and cheap, so no reason not to start there and see what happens. How many miles did you drive with it grinding in 4x4? From what I've read, the CV axles don't last very long when they are under that much stress. Keep an eye on the CV boots to make sure they aren't torn or leaking.
