Yes I'm mostly on flat ground here in TX, some gentle hills at most.

But even when we lived in CA and encountered some decent mountains I never went out of D. Truck seemed to downshift by itself and would rev the engine as needed. I don't think I even ever used tow-haul back then. But then again that truck was a robust 2008 with the factory cooler.

These days I use TH mode thanks to this forum but I'm still not convince that being in some 'S' range would make any difference. Seems like it's merely a cap for the top gear and nothing else.

Anyway, don't mean to derail this thread. Everyone: get yourself one of Nick's kits and sleep well at night knowing your truck is no longer compromised.

Thanks for the video but that was a very basic explanation of tow haul geared toward educating the customer on it's use.

If you carry different load, the TOW/HAUL Mode will hold down the lower gears for longer to prevent the Tundra from attempting to shift to the “right” gear. It will also adjust throttle response, pulling power, and engine braking.Jun 5, 2020

Oh, I found it on this forum somewhere. I do have pedal commander and it duplicates tow haul mode perfectly. It plugs in at the accelerator pedal. As far as pedal commander its "ok". Problem I experience sometimes is a harsh 2nd to 1st downshift while using it. Makes sense as the pedal commander changes the ratio so when I give it gas and its about to downshift it forces it quicker.

When I get a chance and time I'll connect my Techstream and have a look and see what changes when the tow haul is activated.

I run tow/haul constantly. Just prefer the way the engine and trans performs/feels.

While at it, would you mind posting your ATF Thermal Degradation Estimate value? I should have access to Techstream soon and will look at mine as well. Having Nick’s kit should prolong the ATF life and theoretically this value shouldn’t rise very quick.

I have a 2013 Sequoia with tow package. I have what I think was referred here as a hockey puck. Is that my "transmission cooler"???

If so were I to get this kit do I need to replace that with the thermostat or can I route the lines to this cooler?

    Thanks in advance.

Both the heat exchanger aka the hockey puck and the thermostat will be there working together to get the trans quickly up to the operating temperature and to keep it from overheating.

I'm in Phoenix, it's at operating temp when I start it . :p (110 right now)

When I do this do I use the lines to send the oil to the cooler?

Does your passenger side look like this when you open the hood? E.g. the ATF cooler lines? If yes, you already have the external cooler.

    It's a 5.7 After 2008 Sequoias only had the 5.7.

I'm trying to figure out if I need the plumbing and thermostat.

    Thanks

Looks like you have the thermostat. I believe you just need the plumbing and the cooler. If you don't already have it? You should in 2008

My bad but you still should have it in the 2013. You have the thermostat, are you sure there is no cooler? They stopped installing the coolers in the 2019+ Tundras.

I tried to see where the lines from the puck go but it's impossible. Is there coolant or trans oil running through there? I also tried to see the thermostat behind it and I don't think it's there.

I don't have the tech here at work to manipulate this photo and circle the area but the thermostat in this photo is right above the puck. It has little holes that you pass a pin through to pin the thermostat closed when checking the level. You definitely have the thermostat and I'm guessing you have a factory cooler. Your model year came with it.

Well shit I'm a moron! Completely got both of your posts mixed up. So that still does not explain how a 2013 Sequoia doesn't have a trans cooler when it came with one from the factory.

Happy my confused dumbass could help you in some way. :D But still surprised you don't have one given it's a 2013.

It's odd, my 2010 Crewmax has it. I checked to verify the Sequoia has the factory hitch & wiring. It's all 100% oem. I don't get it.

I'll add it and it'll be fine.

    Thanks!

Here's how the Tundra is, this was when I had the ARB installed.

I have a 2019 so obviously don't have the actual cooler......I tow quite a bit in the spring a summer and would like peace of mind. This epiphany came to me before I head out on an especially difficult stretch to take the family camping.

I am going to order the transmission kit, but noticed it requires an ATF pump in the "tools needed" section. Is this possible to do as a DIY - I wrench quite a bit and am not intimidated by the install. I would just like to now what exactly is needed before I start taking it apart. Or is this something that should be taken to an experienced mechanic?

I lack experience and found the install easy. The pumping is not fancy, just bottle top variety, but I used gravity feed with a funnel and PVC tube instead.

    This video is very helpful:

Thanks very much; definitely helpful. Does the OP still sell the entire kit? The maker of the video mentioned that he got a kit that included everything needed for the install......would like to get all at once if possible.

Availability of full vs partial kits seems to change through time. I bought the “Toyota” portion of the kit separately and didn’t run into any issues, the part numbers are all on genuinecoolingsystems.com

I recommend setting up an app with OBD to read transmission temperatures before starting the install, to make sure it is working properly.

I just installed the cooler kit (Setrab) for my 2021 Tundra! I think I did everything right but just want to make sure. Thank you in advance!

After installation, I added ~1.5 quart ATF and performed the level check according to the instruction. I drained ~0.5 quart during the checking process, resulting in a total ~ 1 quart ATF added. Does this sound reasonable to you? The truck is running just fine... Thank you!
