Hi all, just bought a used tundra. I’ve had several tundras and love the trucks. 54k mi. Certified crewmax . 4.8L.

Impeccable condition and very smooth ride but I don’t love the acceleration from a dead stop. Is this just what it is? If I time it right, sure...I can lay rubber down but it just doesn’t seem to have the “put you into your seat” kind of pickup I’d hoped for. I recently drove a buddy’s f-150 with eco boost a it was a very different acceleration. I’d even say my trade in tundra with 225k mi had a bit more but could be imagining it.

Great truck but want to ensure that this is just what it is and I didn’t get a lemon.

Lastly, does an after market air intake help with acceleration and/or gas mileage?

    Appreciate any insight.

    Dave

Aftermarket intakes are not worth the money or make any improvements. The OEM intake is a cold air intake. Just put a drop in filter in it suck as a K&N or AEM Pro Dry.

    Welcome!

I assume you meant 4.6L V8? I never drove one with the 4.6L, but I've read it's adequete for the truck, but won't put you to back of the seat. If you have tow haul mode on the, that can improve the response.

Does the 4.6L V8 have the TOW/HAUL magic button? If so.....push the beatch and.....let 'er rip potato chip.

And as shawn474 said get a Pedal Commander. I have one (5.7L) and I'll just tell you----you can set that sucker so that you just barely touch the GO GO PEDAL and she'll want to break the rear loose.

Are you old enough to remember those old 283 Chevys and 289 Fords from the 50s and 60s? Can you imagine how one of those old BelAirs or Fairlane 500s would perform with an additional ton of curb weight? 4.6L = 281 cubic inches.

Given the weight the 4.6L is powering, it needs those 32 variable-timed valves, dual OHC, sequential fuel injection, electronic direct ignition system, and 310 horsepower just to maintain that performance level (adequate) using the same cylinder displacement. :D

OP, I think you should prepare yourself for very limited returns on whatever investment you make for more power or throttle response. The 4.6L is the somewhat more economical little brother to the 5.7L. I don’t think there’s much you can do to make the former get up and go like the latter. You can make it a bit better; I just don’t think it’s going to be anything like a 5.7L Tundra.

I don’t mean to rain on your parade; just want to temper your expectations with a bit of reality, especially since your frame of reference involves other Tundras and an ecoboost.

This. It obviously doesn’t add power, but can make the pedal more responsive.

Great feedback from all and I appreciate it. Yes, I did mean 4.6.
More of a want than a need at this point and I otherwise couldn’t be happier. But also nice to punch it from time to time. :)

All, I’m considering pulling the trigger on the Pedal Commander. Looks simple enough. Any drawbacks? Particular brands better than others?

I wouldn’t want anything that might risk jacking anything up. I’m handy but not a mechanic guy and pretty ignorant of after market tweaks.

It’s easy ; has some issues sometimes but the customer service is top notch. They’ll send updates via Bluetooth. I had the surging issue and it was fixed immediately with the update

Reach out to Keith Carty of Dirty Deeds Industries. He knows these trucks inside and out. He can recommend a slew of upgrades that will get your truck exactly where you want it. MPG, Low End Torque, HP, V-8 Rumble Sound.... Keith is your guy.

There's a guy in GA selling his Bluetooth PC for cheap ($140). I'd jump on it if I didn't already have one.

If it is tuned like the 4.6L in my GX then it kind of is what it is. They tuned them weak down low. I test drove multiple GX470's and 1st gen Seqouias with the 4.7L and they had more low end grunt than the 4.6L for sure. On the other hand, once you get to 3000 rpm and above the 4.6 pulls harder.

And don't try to compare to either the 2.7 or 3.5 EcoBoost. No other half ton gas motor provides the low end kick that those do, especially the 4.6L. And if it was a 2015+ then it probably also weighs 300-600 lbs less than your Tundra.
