Anyone attempted to remove the chrome side panel trim (running along the bottom center of the front and rear doors) on 2018 and up Platinum? Wondering if it's just adhered to the body with adhesive or if there are trim clips holding it on and some sort of pre-drilled holes in the body...

Not sure I want to tackle removing the door panel to find out and thought I would check here first to see if anyone has attempted to remove it. TIA.

It's just double sided tape. You can use a pry tool or a dental floss. Pry tool is easy but you have to be extra careful.

The chrome piece looks to be seated inside of a black trim piece. So you're saying I can pry off the black piece (carefully) and then buff off tape residue or adhesive?

You just made my day if that's the case because I got a quote to get it color matched to the car and whew!

I dechromed both the Sequoia and Tundra. It's not like the cats in the before the 90s. Everything all badges are just stick on.

No, you might have some color variations between the exposed paint and non exposed paint.

I removed the Platinum badges and had to some slight buffing, but I'm talking about the strips pictured below. I'm not sure what year they were added (I think maybe 2018 when they changed the headlights and hood shape). You can tell the chrome is seated in some sort of black channel. I'm not sure if the channel is attached to the body with some sort of adhesive or if there are holes drilled thru the body.

@Roman Is this secured only with tape?

I doubt you can just remove the chrome and have it look good, my bet would be that the chrome is welded to the black part. So if you remove the just the chrome there will be holes in the black, which would look not very nice.

And Toyota at times loves to put alignment holes in the panels for the moldings. I would try and remove from the passenger side first, and see how it goes. If there are holes, then you can retape the mldg and reinstall it. And not have to look at it every time you get into the truck.

**** Never mind about the holes in the door panels, just looked it up, and they are a dealer option, so the are tape/glued on. ****

It doesn't show in the diagram, but there is only one part number for the door shell. Should just be held on with adhesive.

Thanks for all the help guys. The striper were indeed held on by adhesive strips. An hour and several blisters later... The strips have been removed and the area cleaned and ready to buff. Will post a picture of the finished project. Extremely happy that I didn't have to pay to get them color matched. The Sequoia looks MUCH better without the chrome strips.

After a quick buffing with some polishing compound you can’t even tell they were ever there.

Damn, I am soooo glad my 2018 Platinum didn’t come with those. It would have been a deal breaker

**EDIT** just seen you have a Sequoia. Glad to hear you got it off ok

I was going to suggest a heat gun, dental floss, and "goop" to remove the residue..

I've used fishing line to remove the smaller emblems. These were a little tougher. I actually ended up using a wooden shim to and some slight prying with the opposite hand to split the two strips of adhesive tape holding the strips on.

I don't unfortunately. You pretty much have to destroy the molding in order to get it off. It's a very thin metal-ish material and when you pry it off it bends, warps and creases all to hell.
