When it’s 90 plus degrees outside my ac on LO and max fan speed seems very weak. At night it works just fine, won’t quite ice you out but it’s pretty good.

Has anyone else experienced lack luster air conditioning performance?

I remember reading some other people mention something similar but couldn’t find the thread. I’m at the dealer right now and of course it worked just fine when I pulled in but it’s only 74 degrees outside. I’m having them check it out. Hopefully they find something.

Most A/C systems can handle about a 20 degree drop in temp from ambient. So if your above 90, you will likely be at 70 degrees plus. This is dependent on several factors, humidity being a big contributor. You will cool more effectively in a dry climate than in a very humid one.

I have played with the reculate button. It is usually on. It has been humid here but nothing like it will be later this month.

I never thought about the humidity factor. It just feels weak. My 2010 Silverado blew ice cold from day one until I traded it in on the new Tundra.

I've noticed some systems just run colder than others from car to car. Dodge Ram sucks ass when it's hot, Sierra 3500 sucks ass when it's hot, Lexus IS350 is ice cold when it's hot, Nissan Pathfinder sucks ass when it's hot, old ass 1996 4runner is colder than shit when it's hot, Tundra - I would say is on the sucks ass when it's hot list - at least until the rig warms up and you get moving.

Check your cabin air filter. Your issue sounds different as a clogged cabin air filter will usually just not work properly all the time. But it doesn’t hurt to check.

Yes. Mine is ice cold out on the highway but sitting still especially after just starting the truck it is not very cold. I think it must have something to do with the location of the condenser. Sometimes mine is so cold I have to turn down the temperature even with the fan on low. This is even out in the middle of the desert.

I live 7 miles away from work and everywhere I run to is pretty close to the house. Maybe I need to turn beast mode on and really get things spinning.

I may just come to the dealership on a hot day and see how the other 18’s perform if they don’t find anything today.

I turn mine to full fan lo temp and all windows down until I get positive cold airflow then I close all windows starting with the rear then rear pax then fronts and lastly sunroof which I tilt up and close once the heat soaking has dissipated

2018 here and the A.C. In the Tundra is even colder than the other car, which I thought " kicked ass! ".

I have to turn it down after 15 mins.

I do not have that problem. It's been really hot here in MS with humidity and mine is cold. So cold I have to turn it down sometimes.

Now it does sometimes take a bit to cool off the cabin. But I just attribute that to it being 500 Sq ft. Ha.

HVAC is weak in the Tundras and has been since 2007, common complaint if you do a search.

my 2015 AC rocks and I am in Mississippi . Sun shade are a must while parking and I have tinted windows (dark but legal) , roll the windows down to change out the air after parking etc. Start out in max (recirculate) . I have to turn mine down after a short while and I drove through the baking ass hot southern Delta this weekend .

In my experience it takes awhile to cool down even on full blast and recirculate. Once it's cooled down it can maintain it fine. I've noticed it cools down more quickly when driving the highway or constant road with air flow going. Light to light it takes longer and doesn't feel like it's blowing as cold.

    I live in Florida.

Get a small probe type thermometer and put it in one of the dash vents. That'll tell you what the output temp is. It's hard to judge how well the system is working on sunny days since the sun will heat up the dash, you, and everything else in the truck. Radiant heat can be a real problem.

    These work quite well.

That is what the tech said. I will give it a whirl. He took it for a drive and said it frosted the chrome bezels. Maybe I just haven’t driven it long enough. He said it takes 15 minutes to get peak performance. I guess I’m not use to the switch yet from my old truck that would cool me down super quick when it was set to 70.

Its been 95+ here in TX lately and I've noticed the same thing on my 2018. My 2013 didn't have this issue. I have to drive with the fan on high and recirculation on with temp on max a/c most of the time. We also have a Scion Xb and that thing will freeze you out! Funny how that little toasters a/c works better than a $45K truck.

That’s what I was thinking to. My roommates Denali pumps cold air from the start.

I hoped something was wrong but the tech said mine cooled better than spec. Of course today in Omaha it was in the 70’s and muggy when I took it in. Hopefully opening the windows and having recirculation off will help put some fresh air through the system.

Mine's cool, not as cold as some vehicles I've had/been in. Doesn't help I'm in a black box. I usually open all the windows for the first few minutes to let that greenhouse heat out. I also turn and angle the vents so the air hits me in the face, didn't know they turned when I first got the truck lol.

I rarely use recirc. When I do it is only after the cabin cools. Pulling in outside air at 95 degrees when you first crank it up is a lot better than 140 degree inside air. I thought my cabin filter was clogged a couple of days ago until I looked over and realized the selector was on floor setting.

My 2017 CM cools pretty good. I got limo tint on the back 3 recently, upgraded the drivers side tint to reflect out more heat without going darker. Max legal all the way around.

I’ve also been better about using my windshield cover when I’m parked. It hasn’t been nearly as hot in there when I load the kids into it. Since the truck hasn’t been baking the heat into the inside as much I notice it cools down much quicker, even in the Houston humidity (last week, only high 80s this week lol). After a few minutes on the freeway it’s nice and cool (I’m about 10minutes from the freeway so the 15 minute guide line others have mentioned makes sense).

I drop the back window and slowly bring it up about 1/4 of the way every few minutes while the system is cooling everything off. I leave it on circulate to encourage the hot air to rise out the back with the cold air blowing out the dash vents as well as at my feet. I usually leave it one setting off of full dash.

Last week it was hot out and I just had my tint done so I couldn’t roll my windows down for a few days. Luckily I have remote start, so as long as I remember to set my AC settings before getting out of the car it’s not scorching hot when I get in.

It does take MUCH longer to cool down than other vehicles I’ve owned, but that makes sense as it probably has twice the cabin space LOL

I turned my ac down when it was 97 degrees yesterday after 8 min of driving. So far this AC has been the coldest I have ever had in a vehicle but maybe my past/other vehicles had/have suck worthy AC systems.

Take it in to the dealership and get them to check it out. I had that problem with my 1st Gen Tundra. They had to drain the freon and fill it with new one. It got a few degrees cooler afterwards.

No issues on my 16. I use recirculation often, and auto start. I've been in temps up to 106F. I check the HVAC filter when I check the air filter.

Depending on your location, humidity has a lot to do with cooling. I would recommend tinting the windows with a strip on the windshield, also a set of vent visors "so you can leave the windows cracked open" while parked and a good sunshade never hurts. This has always done the trick living in Fla.
Your short drive doesn't help too much either, if you can try to find some shade to park under if you can, you will notice a big difference.
