So I have a 2017 5.7L I force. I am getting 12.5 mpg I have a 26.4 gallon tank= 330mpg but it’s saying it’s 280 why is that when it’s full? I have 49,000 miles should be broken in by now. Could there be a sensor accuracy issue? Just curious of why it’s not accurate from the math.

It keeps a few gallons in reserve that it doesn't calculate. You can drive another 30-40 +/- miles after it says empty

I've got a 2013 with 26 gallon tank. I've run 55 miles with the light on and the most I've been able to put in the tank is right under 23 gallons. I'm only getting about 15 miles per gallon. I've read there is like a 6 gallon reserve. Heck, 50 over and still 3 gallons in the tank.

    Too many, but not enough....
6 gallon reserve is accurate. However, it shouldnt be used regularly as it has alot to do with keeping the fuel pump submerged in gasoline for proper function.

I've got a 2020 with a 38 Gallon tank and average around 9 MPG and after every fill up 408 comes up on the dash but usually when i put gas in it at 1/4 tank or a little above it usually takes about 30 gallons. I want to say the reserve is around 8 gallons give or take.

Those numbers are just estimates. My fill ups say 409 consistently and I average 13.6 mpg.

Yep just estimates. I average about 75 miles per 1/4 tank, usually a bit less.

It is generally accepted the tank has a 6 gallon reserve. I fill up my 26.4 gallon tank as the low fuel light comes on. Almsot every time I get high 20 to low 21 gals before the pump shuts off.

The Toyota algorithm is an estimate at best. Calculations are done by the instrument cluster after receiving injector pulse info from the ECU, fuel level from tank sender, distance travel from ABS ecu.

Keep in mind tire sizes will effect this also. The ABS ecu is programmed to the factory tire size. Changing tires will cause error in the distance signal reported to the cluster.

My MPG on the cluster says I am getting about 12-12.5 mpg. Reality is closer to 11 Mpg from calculations at the pump. I have a spreadsheet and log every fill up.

This winter time gas blend and idling more to warm the truck up took me from 13-14 mpg in summer to 11 mpg now in winter

With my light, I struggle to hit 20.5. But don't have computer generated MPG so figure on my own. 14.5 - 15, all highway miles, but at 75/80mph. But jumping up tire sizes put a hurting on miles per gallon. But gotta look good right!

You're getting better than you think if you haven't adjusted for the larger tires.

Without extra reserve, the truck would likely have problems with fuel starvation. Think steep driveway for a second or climbing a long steep grade. Would you want to be slowly crawling up or down a big muddy hillside and run out of fuel because it all ran to one end of the tank leaving the pump pickup dry?

I had thought that the 2016+ 5.7L's all got the 38 gallon tank on every trim above the SR. No?

I've never run my tank terribly low, I wonder if my 2016 SR5 has the 38 tank or not, hmm. Running the VIN on Toyota's site confirms it's go the SP SR5 package and all that but doesn't mention the tank size.

Well, I just run the numbers from what it takes to fill and miles and come up with the average. 34.5" not too fuel efficient.

Right, but you have to account for the extra distance travelled per revolution of the tire. You're odometer and speedometer will be off by the same percentage that you increased the tire circumference by.

Ahh, true. Didn't think about odometer. but it's really small. I think drive to drive from home to work was only a difference of less than a mile over a 75 mile trip. But never crossed my mind!

+1, a 34.5 is at least 6% bigger then OEM.
