New member here, so bear with me... I have a 17 (Wife's) and 16 tundra. 17 rear diff scrapping sound --- rotor (OEM rotor) grinding against e brake back plate.... no obvious rust, diff gear oil looked fine, no play i could feel, and no grinding sound when truck is in drive on the lift.... but spin axle by hand n hear a clear gear tapping sound (poor explanation, but have video .. too big for upload)... dealer states limited slip on tundra is reason for sound.. no issue!! My issue is my 16 has 20k more miles n sound is very different! Thanks for any insight

If your truck is stock, it doesn't have a mechanical LSD. Your auto LSD works through the braking system to mimic a true LSD. Maybe the ring and pinion/ bearings inside the diff are making noise, but it's not probably not the "limited slip" making noise.

It could be the Pin inside the diff backing out and making contact as it rotates. As stated, the factory rear is not an LSD. That pin is the weak point of the otherwise big and strong 10.5” diff. I’ve heard a lot of 1 wheel peels can cause it to back out over time. The solution is to install a real LSD unit like a Powertrax or Auburn, or a locker like an Eaton/Harrop or ARB.

Good copy... I knew not true LSD, BUT don't know details of how it mimicked LSD. Therefore, sounds like I should upgrade or check pin? Have yr or 12k left on warranty, so I was hesitant to pull.

    Thanks

Did replace rear rotors n brakes.. they were close n noise increased to turns left n right ... rotor e brake area is .03mm deeper than stock. Scrape cause n sound, which I assume was rear axle bearings going. Seems not to be case? Having that diff milled... praying sound goes away!!
