I’m looking into picking up a “new” (used) Tundra. The most common years I’m seeing that are within my wants are 2016 and 17. Is there any real difference between the two? Either one would be a 4x4 5.7 Double Cab. I know trim level can change what comes with it- just looking into general differences (if any).

I don’t think there are much of any difference??

Did you find one of each year?

most of the changes came in 2018 then 20/21 models.

    2015 FTW!

I think the 2017 got the bigger tank.

I’ve seen a couple of each- all similar in terms of trim. I know the 20/21 got Apple CarPlay, and I assume that’s it? What’s new in the 2018? Anything worth my while, or are the 16/17/18 the same? I know newer is probably better in terms of age, but that’s not my main motivator.

My 17 5.7 has been a very solid and reliable truck.

The LED headlights are much better than the standard halogens. I would seek a truck with those, as it's pricey to add after the fact.

Go for condition over year, as there isn't much difference between the two.

2018 was the addition of the TSS package. (Radar cruise, collision avoidance, etc)

2016 was the first year the 38 gallon tank became an option but was not standard. The package it was included in varies through the years.

There might have been a new instrument cluster layout in '16 or '17? Not 100% sure.

Agree with the LEDs being far superior.

It was about $800 when I upgraded my 2017 - not cheap but also not worth spending a few grand on a newer/different trim truck IMO…

38 gallon fuel tank way bigger deal for me.

I think 2017 was the first year the exterior temp is always displayed on the center cluster.

    Both are great choices.
    I had a 17 and loved it.
I don’t believe much changed between the years you mentioned. Good luck with your choice!

I agree 100% with you. The 38 gal fuel tank is a must have. The lights are fairly easy to do, and $800 is less expensive than I thought.

The 2017 got a honeycomb style grill.

LED headlights too possibly. My '16 came with the halogens which were absolute garbage.

I guess it’s settled. The 2017 Tundra was the best truck ever made. Find one in good shape and you’ll be a happy Tundra owner.

I thought it was 2018 that got the new cluster. Seems to me like that's worth it.

To the OP, if I were buying a used Tundra, 2018 would be my choice. Big fuel tank, upgraded cluster and transmission cooler.

Yeah, I'm honestly not sure when they updated the cluster for sure.

100% agree the bigger tank is a must, but you have to check all the details on the packages by MY because they kept moving it around. It was in the SR5 Convenience Package on mine, but I think on another year it was in the TRD Off Road. That tank is such a high priority to me that I wouldn't buy one without being certain it was there.

17 was the last year you had everything in your control without any extra computers.

    Big tank.
    Trans-cooler
    No nanny
    Best of the best IMO.
But no LED lights. (Easy fix)
    Yes I have a 17... Lol

A loaded 16 would be closest without the computers so long as you got one with the big tank.

OP, if you plan to tow and you get a 2016 or 2017, make sure to get the TSB done on the integrated brake controller or get yourself an aftermarket one. The controller in my truck is good but I think they had some issues before 2018.

Lots of people do not like the Toyota Safety Sense items and refer to them as nannies. The truck can automatically brake to prevent a collision, for example.

Thanks. I assume you can’t turn them off? In that case, I better prioritize a 2017 over an 18. If I see a good 18, then I might take it (assuming all the new stuff isn’t a pain in the rear). I do really like that “new” cluster though. Thanks guys.

You can turn them off, but you need to do so each time the truck is started. I have a 2019 with them, and it's not intrusive IMO, and I love the radar cruise control.
