So this is my first post but I've had my tundra since last February.

    20160228_115207.jpg

This is my first Toyota and i ordered it and received with 3 miles on it. I added amp research steps, Truxedo lopro qt tonneau cover and line x bed. Everything was great including a couple trips to seattle but very little driving for the most part.

I then started having trouble since October 2016 when I came out to oil all over the ground.

    20160925_114908.jpg

I couldn't believe it...I only had like 6k miles at this time cause I have a work Truck and barely drive the tundra.

The dealer tells me it's the cam bucket and they would have to keep it....3 weeks goes by and I get it back. I drive it off the lot and the cel comes on. I returned it and it was just a sensor that wasn't plugged in all the way.

A couple weeks go by and I notice oil drips in my garage cause my garage is epoxy coated.

I take it in again and they say the valve cover is leaking cause they reused the gasket. So they take 2 weeks to get the part and fix it.

So now I think I'm good to go and I have made no complaints and have been patient since I'm friends with the service manager. However I start noticing oil again and now coolant. I take it back and my friend yells at the mechanic and after thorough investigation they notice a loose coolant clamp as well as the original cam bucket repair is leaking on that side and now the other side is leaking as well. They say they are going to redo both sides now.

I am now thinking WTF have I got myself into. Is this gonna kill my resale? Do I call Toyota and discuss lemon law stuff? Do I bail on this and get the 2018 asap?

Just wondering what you guys think. Anyone else have leaks like this?

If the dealer told me it was leaking because they re-used a gasket, I would already have been on the phone to Toyota.

UGH THAT SUCKS!!! I would definitely call Toyota. I had an issue with an oil leak where the transmission meets the engine block....
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/oil-leaking-from-main-bell-housing-again.5804/
See my thread above... although your leak is in a different place, you should still get SOMETHING from Toyota. Oregon has pretty specific qualifiers for Lemon law... but I would for sure look at Montana's laws.

3 times and over 5 weeks. I think that would qualify for the lemon law in CA. I would check with your state laws. Search lemon law lawyers, I believe some work for free, they'll collect from the settlement from Toyota. Wouldn't be a bad idea to talk to one before you talk to Toyota to see if you have any leverage. Good luck OP.

Bummer. You initially had a leak which sucks to begin with but was compounded by a bad service tech. I really don't think lemon law would apply here but you should def be talking to Toyota and the service manager, not just your friend. They need to compensate you in some way for your inconvenience like free window tint, free extension to the mileage services, extended warranty or something.

I agree with you guys, but it isn't so easy in Montana. His next closest dealership is a bit away from Butte.

Looks like Montanas law is Similar to CA law.

    • Be under 2 years old and have fewer than 18,000 miles on the odometer.
    • Have undergone at least 3 attempts at repair by the manufacturer.
    • Be out of service due to the defect for a total of 30 business days or more during the warranty period.

That sounds about right. I worked for Toyota when I lived in Montana. We didn't have a lot of lemon law issues, but the service manager would be all about the customer if it was returned even once.

Thanks for all the input. The closest dealer is 65 miles up in Helena.

Never thought about compensation in requesting a extended warranty.

The situation is difficult because it's a small town and everyone knows each other and my wife and I are friends with the service manager. They where already aggravated I bought the truck in denver after giving them a chance at my business. There was no comparison in price though.

I'm gonna call Toyota about it and I'll just let my friend know about my plan 1st.

I don't think it will hurt resale but if someone does their homework and search service records you may have to explain. It would have been hard for me to keep my cool. All that work you explained was warranted work and I can tell you that their service book does not call for reusing gaskets so they are billing Toyota for new parts then not using them. HUGE red flag here. Ask your friend to see itemized list of parts and labor for all your repairs. Sorry you had to deal with this crap.

I had the same issue with my 011,leaking cam towers on the drivers side. Mine wasn't leaking as badly as yours is,it would spot on the garage floor. The dealership where I bought the truck (Fenton Toyota Keene NH) ordered the parts needed, they had the truck for 3 weeks and replaced both sides. So far I haven't had any issues with the cam towers since the repair, and it has been over a year since it was fixed. I would be very concerned if my truck was leaking as much oil as yours is. I hope you are able to find someone able to repair your truck properly,it can be done.My truck had 30,000 miles on it at the time.

    None, yet....
So I don't think this is lemon law. Lemon applies to a failure that can't be fixed by the dealer which relates to a manufacturer issue. You had 1 issue that should have been easily fixed. Toyota has had FIPG issues before. The problem you have here is shitty workmanship from the dealer. I am not sure if this would technically classify as lemon law, but there should be a law in which if the vehicles goes back for multiple attempts from the dealer or has sat for a specific number of days, they can buy it back.

My advice: have the dealer contact their Field Technical Specialist(FTS). This is a Toyota rep responsible for technical issues at the dealer. He should be able to be involved and make sure an actual Toyota certified tech get out on your truck to fix it. This is a prime example of just bad work from the dealer.

I think you have been misinformed about the failure that can't be fixed thing. It is actually three repair attempts

This is taken from the Montana Lemon Law stipulations taken from here

    Lemon Law Process
    1. Notify the manufacturer. If the problem is a substantial defect or condition that recurs or still exists after the third repair attempt, notify the manufacturer by certified mail, return receipt requested, of the need to repair the defect or condition on the fourth attempt. This notification procedure is not required under the Lemon Law, but does serve as notice to the manufacturer of your intentions.
    2. If the manufacturer fails to correct any substantial defect or condition following your written notification, the manufacturer must either refund the full purchase price – plus any reasonable expenses directly incurred because of the vehicle’s condition – or provide an identical or reasonably similar replacement vehicle. If the vehicle is bought back, the manufacturer can deduct an amount for the use of the vehicle calculated based on the odometer reading at the time of repurchase.
    3. If you think you are entitled to a refund or replacement and the manufacturer is unwilling to provide either remedy, you must first submit your dispute to a state-certified dispute settlement program approved by the Montana Department of Justice. Contact the Office of Consumer Protection for further assistance

    UPDATE,

Well I called Toyota as suggested and after a couple weeks I heard back from them and they offered a 7 year 100k warranty. The truck was fixed properly by the dealer and I haven't had any further leaks at this point. Toyota was good about offering the warranty. I never got angry and just discussed the issues I was having and the concerns about the vehicles reliability.

Thanks for all the info and suggestions.

    Nice.
I had a 2015 Silverado. At 6200 miles I started having issues w it. I got towed in 5 times within about 300 miles. Every time they had it they'd change a part that the computer told them to. Next day or two I was back on a tow truck. Finally turned out to be low pressure fuel pump came apart. With the active fuel management thing there's 3 pumps.
They finally bought it back under lemon law. Was always a Chevy guy, never again.
I'm glad it got me into the tundra.

My neighbors brand new 2017 chevy 2500 Duramax started leaking oil after only having it a week. Chevy fixed it, just goes to show can't be 100% perfect everytime.
