Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. I’m looking to get a tuner for my 2015 5.7L SR5. What is everyone running and why did you choose that one? I’ve never tuned a vehicle before so this is all new to me. Thanks In Advance!!

Welcome Tony. Bully Dog and Dap are the 2 most common tunes. I'm happy with my BD tune.

What kind of mpg increase have you seen with the tune? Any issues with warranty?

Dap is the only one that says his tune is not detectable by a dealer, BUT you have to have it tuned in person. I went with his remote tune. I'll have to swap it back to the stock tune before I bring it to the dealer (you'd have to do that with the BD as well)., No biggie, it takes 5 min.

Minor improvements with daily drivability (torque management isn't as bad). No additional mpg. When you are trying to romp on it, that's when you will feel the tune. Shifts are crisp and a higher rev limiter makes it haul ass

Uh, mileage,,,,, increase? Not quite how it worked for me. The tuner "woke" up the throttle response and tightened up the shift points. I put 35" tires on my truck and the mileage went to hell. The tuner is kinda making up for not re-gearing. Next week new gears go in and we'll see then what happens to the mileage.
If it's all about mileage, don't change a thing on the truck and drive it like a grandpa. Then you can see 17+ mpg on the freeway.

Hahaha yeah, I did a 6” lift and put 35s on mine and the mileage dropped much more than I anticipated. Didn’t do this much damage to my Chevy when I did the same setup. I’m afraid to see what I get hauling a toyhauler. Hahaha

That's where the re-gear really helps,,,,, I hope. I've got a heavy overland trailer and with 35s I rarely ever see 6th gear. Even empty, at 70 mph, it won't hold 6th on the slightest uphill grades. You might wanna talk with Keith, @dirtydeeds. He's really helpful and knows our trucks quite well.

have you looked into getting the truck re geared? Curious what that’s gonna run. I may hit up a couple of truck shops here in town today and see what they recommend too.

I managed to get a set of 5.29 gears and they're being installed this Wed. The 5.29s are new and not readily available yet, most folks have 4.88s. The gears, front and rear were close to $1,200 (4.88s can be found a lot cheaper) and install for is around $1,500 (really expensive in this part of the country).
If you're in a state that permits, performance gains can be had with long tube headers. Not permitted here in Cali. Again, Keith would be best for advice on this stuff.

You may be able to find a good shop that's a little cheaper for the gear install. There's nothing here and I've gotta go to Salinas to have mine done. I've read about some people paying as little as 1k for 4wd install. Soop, @TRD15559 might know of a shop semi close to you.

    Absolutely look at the bullydog.

While other options claim they can’t be traced by the dealer, they also can’t revert back to stock ever again either.

The beauty of the bullydog is that you have options. You can set up several configurations for throttle, tune, trans shifting, and speed governor. It’s not just one configuration. And when it’s time to go back to stock, it safely stores then downloads the stock tune back onto your ecu.

I can send you a bullydog gtplatinum or bdx for only $380 shipped.

Can the Bully Dog adjust the speedometer for larger tires? I currently have the Hypertech in line calibrator and it loses the calibration when the truck battery dies.

My truck has been stock...Bully Dog Tuned and currently Orange Virus Tuned. If you do any towing the Gear Locking feature running the OV Tune is the icing on the cake :) I would skip the Bully Dog if I was to do it all again today.

Everything. Throttle sensitivity, tune type 4 different tunes, speed limiter, transmission shifts, gauges, reverse back to stock dealer cannot detect it. All the can tunes are identical bullydog, dap, ov tune. But bullydog is the one that change afr and igntion timing which is huge. Bullydog is like 380ish from dirtydeeds and ov tune is like 550-600 so its up to you. The only thing ov tune has over bullydog is the gear locking nothing else. You get more customization from bullydog than anyone.

I was running the premium fuel Supercharged tune with Bully Dog and it ran pretty good but went a little too lean for me under load at high RPM's. Also the trans shifting left a lot to be desired especially when the truck was cold and coming up to temperature(Yes, I tried the different shifting tuning's). I cannot speak regarding the DAP tune, But the OVTune is not what I would call a canned tune. Yes the initial base tune you receive could be considered a canned tune, however after you start providing data logs and start receiving revision's based upon your trucks parameter's(AFR, Fuel trims, timing, Trans shift points, etc...) it quickly moves into more of a remote custom tune. My set up since you asked is Tune #1 on start up, and Tune #2(towing tune) once tow/haul is activated. Gear locking is available in either tune once you move the shifter into "S" mode. I have gone through maybe half a dozen revisions post data logging and the tune is virtually complete for me unless they come out with some new feature that interests me.

Edit. OP...Again I will say that if I was to do it all again today I would skip the BD tune. Myself and others I know personally are/were less than impressed. I have no skin in this game at this point and it really makes no difference to me if you want to run a first, second or third rate tune...Do your research and talk with folks who have experience with each tune. Good luck and enjoy your truck...

Oh i cannot speak for supercharged tundras only n/a. Toyota really did a good job using the most safe power for their factory tune. Thats why tuning is difficult for n/a trying to get more power. You might get 20hp max at top end but its all about whats under the curve and torque plays a big role. I do agree ov tune might be better for supercharged 5.7 but stock 5.7 i would go with bullydog because every tuner is gonna be about the same power wise for their tune. Data logs are close to a custom tune but not really. Custom tune is done on the dyno to show power under the curve and how to improve it. Whats your afr at wot.

I have no idea currently what the WOT AFR is as I dont drive it much during the winter. Matt made one last revision last month pulling a hint of timing at WOT as my truck was just a tad aggressive and I have not logged since, or borrowed my friends portable wideband unit. Honestly man for a street driven car/truck I do not care about peak HP on a dyno, and I used to dyno tune my cars/bike's years ago regularly. Good data logging in real world conditions and quality tuning revision's based upon those driving logs mean more to me than some peak dyno number under somewhat controlled conditions. I have had my Shelby tuned this way with Lund Racing, My SVT Cobra done with Lito and now my SC Tundra with OVTune and could not be happier with the results.

Torque is a much more important number for most folks when talking about these trucks...and with OVTune's custom tuning and gear locking feature you simply have more usable torque through the gears...NA trucks included :) I already gave my Reccomendation regarding the OP's question so will bow out of this thread now. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss further and/or I can email you some of my data logs to look at.

I totally agree with you as torque goes. As the saying goes torque wins races and hp sells cars. We need torque for our 5300lb truck. I have intake, exhaust and headers and bullydog set on trail with performance shifting and performance throttle sensitivity i cannot be happier. Yes dyno with custom tuning would better or possibly ov tune with gear locking but at the end of the day its all about what you can afford at the time being. Now i got bullydog for 300 shipped and im sure theirs deals out there for other tuners like hp tuners.

You could always get obdII scanner with the torque pro app and look at your afr that way. We dont have o2 sensor we have air fuel sensor wideband. And its really accurate compare to aftermarket aem wideband.

I had put my tune to regular tune on the bullydog and i was getting like 16 to 17 afr at wot. Way to lean and pulled so much timing but i didnt really notice it while driving.
