I have a 2007 Tundra 5.1L V8 4 wheel drive with 156,000 mi. Transmission appears to be slipping. Can this transmission be rebuilt or will I have to purchase a new transmission? Was told a new one would cost about $4500. Is that reasonable or can it be repaired.

Transmission can be rebuilt by a shop the other option is too get a remanufactured one.. most remanufactured ones (good ones) come with a warranty on it..

I took it to a shop and was told it needed to be replaced. Don't believe they opened it to check. Told me it couldn't be rebuilt. Not sure how they determined this. Can you get a reading that tells what the problem is?

In dealership, we do not rebuild automatic transmissions. That's not to say they can't be rebuilt, but I had a Jasper reman transmission in my Odyssey and it lasted 6 months longer than the warranty (3 years) before catastrophic failure.

With any World Standard transmissions, I start with draining the fluid and setting the level via Techstream and the check hole. I have seen this clear up many shift quality and slipping issues. If the fluid level is not correct or there are any contaminants in the fluid it can cause all kinds of problems.

That being said, we don't replace many Toyota automatic transmissions. When we do, we almost always use Toyota remans.

Do you have any explanation as to why they said it needs replaced?
