Just purchased a 2002 Tundra. I notices when making a sharp turn to the right or left it almost jumps or skips. Hard to explain. I made tight turns in a parking lot and it only does this when making hard tight circles. Other than that it drives fine. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

No. It sounds like there is loss of tension because it only happens when he puts a load on it. There is tension but not enough. Of course checking the fluid level is just obvious thing do. A Bad Toyota power steering pump? Maybe, but highly unlikely. Did someone tighten the rack too much? Maybe.

One way to determine if one has CV joint issues is to do what you are describing....hard right or left tight turns in parking lot. Hearing a clicking, popping or grinding noise would indicate CV issue.

I have the occasional click/pop on my steering wheel column when doing low speed small turns. Haven’t tracked it down yet as it seems like lots of work to eliminate an occasional sound.

This jumping steering wheel, as I understand it, would be annoying. Never experienced this on my 2002, but...

Maybe Sbct has power steering boogers like I had? I was doing a suck and fill at the P/S reservoir with the engine on (stupid hand model move). The P/S Pump started screaming all of the sudden! Happened to have the fresh fluid bottle right next to me so I immediately poured some in. Pump quieted. Noticed boogers in the P/S Rez afterwards which weren’t there before (caught in filter screen). Ended up sucking those out (pictured). There was three times this amount.

Maybe the boogers are clogging Steering Rack Ports? Who knows. I’m only guessing. Nobody has explained these boogers, yet.

It feels like it would be coming from the differential maybe? I have honestly never felt that before in any vehicle I have ever owned. It would remind you of turning on dry pavement with 4 wheel drive engaged but not as bad. That is the closest way I can describe it.

My first concern would be that the debris is from the pump vanes being chipped during the "cavitation" event while running with low fluid level. Since the "boogers" can be "smooshed", it's more likely they are just sludge that has accumulated over the years, and loosened into the fluid by the vibration. Vane chips wouldn't "smoosh"...I would expect them to be hard and fibrous. Probably no harm done.

It sounds like you're in 4wd. But, what does your PS juice look like?

My first step would be to check out the CV joints as @BubbaW suggested. The symptoms are not as strong because you AREN'T in 4WD; the differential end of the shaft is free.

Thanks for this. My thoughts are the same on the smooshings. Reason I smooshed them was for post-mortem analysis and was glad it wasn’t metal chips! I filled the rez faster than I could have run to turn the truck off!

Maybe this is a new ‘flushing technique’ only for the not faint at heart? Those boogers had to be causing some blockage somewhere. Better out than stuck up in there.

It definitely is not in 4x4. The power steering fluid looks of normal color.

Hmmm, my next suggestion is put it on jackstands and try to turn it then. Get a second person and look under there and see if maybe the rack itself is doing bad things or maybe the bushings are shot and putting the rack in a bind.

True, check your tie rod ends too. Take pics so we can see what's going on.

Might need new steering rack bushings? Rack slipping/rocking with old bushing looseness? Depending on visual inspection, our bushings should have been replaced by now due to their age.

There's alot of possible causes, but jacking it up and checking everything like those rack bushings, total tightness of the front end, then could be CV shafts binding. There's a fix, and you'll find, I hope this all helps. :hattip:
