    Hello everyone,

    I have a 2001 Toyota Tundra. Automatic It’s a V6 Access Cab.

The 4x4 shifter is on the floor.
    (Pic attached)

I cannot shift it out of position. Some have you said you just have to pull with force…. This thing isn’t budging!

    Any help would be great.

Unfortunately I don't think I can help you but I did not know they built them with the 4WD shifter on the floor. I've always seen it on the dash next to the clock.

    I think it's maybe only a V6 option, I haven't seen the V8 with floor shift.

Drive in reverse in a straight line for 10 feet, then park it on level ground and put the transmission in neutral. Put your foot out the door and rock the vehicle a bit and try changing the 4wd selector. Usually the drivetrain is a little bound up making it difficult to move the selector. It’s much easier to do with the vehicle in neutral.

I have no advice other than what's already been said about being in neutral.

The Field Service Manual is in my signature if you need technical diagrams or anything of that sort.

If that still doesn’t work, put a floor jack under the rear end and lift it just off the ground. Start it up, put ur foot on the brake, and shift to R, then D, then R, then N. Try moving the selector. Don’t forget to drop the jack back down and remove it.

If its still jammed, the linkage could likely be the culprit. Inspect from u see watch the truck.

After trying to remove an entire engine/transmission/x-fer case in a junkyard unsuccessfully...

Which was the same engine/trans/x-fer combo as yours...

There really isn't a whole lot that I can see going wrong with that in my minds eye, but I have very little experience with a floor shifter 4WD.

So I did drive backwards a bit. Then in Neutral, I was able to move 4x4 one spot down and the 4x4 light did come on..
Now, I am beyond confused. If you look at the picture attached. It looks like the truck is in 4L as per shifter. And its resting spot is all the way up forward.

Shifter won’t move from that point. So if you look at shifter in pic. It looks like I moved it from 4L to Neutral…..

I know with my truck, I can't shift into 4L *unless* the main shifter is in Neutral. This is by design and is discussed in the manual.

Stupid question, but have you RTFM to see how Toyota wants you to use the 4WD shifter? It would make sense you had to be in Neutral to do anything with it.

I have the manual. And all info for from 2005. It was bought certified. I also contacted dealer and I would have to leave it for them to even look at it. And there will be a charge.

You shifted from H2 to H4. Move it right and up to get to neutral. Shift the trans to neutral then you can shift the xfer case to L4.

Consider fluid change now, make sure you put the right stuff in it. Chances are, what's in the diffs is gnarly after years of non-use.

Man, I would prefer to have an actual 4x4 shifter like that. I hate "magic push button" 4x4.

Agreed. I think there was someone on here that put one in theirs along with a manual.
