Toyota care literature states...every 5,000 miles oil & filter change. I've contacted 2 dealerships, 1 won't change filter and the other won't change oil or filter till 10,000 miles.
This seems to like the dealerships are shorting the service to make more profit. I've always followed manufacturer service intervals, since they are the engineers who designed the vehicle.

Anyone have any suggestions to get them to follow the guidelines outlined by Toyota?

Find a different dealer. Or better yet - change it yourself. They don't put their sharpest techs on oil changes.

Yep, first DIY change one missing skid bolt, one non OEM skid bolt and had to use 2' cheater bar to get filter cap off. Also broke one cheap cast filter tool. Some dealers dont know FFVs are 5000 mile changes. Take it back and point out that it is FFV. It should come up on their computer when the enter vin.

I would contact Toyota directly and complain about those dealers. It's part of the Toyota Care package that is included in the purchase of your new truck.

FFV engine has oil change intervals of 5,000 miles.
NON FFV engine has oil change intervals of 10,000 miles.

My dealer wanted me to come in before 5K for the initial service. Between 4k-5k. I think I even set up an appointment when I did all my paperwork.

I use Mobil1 0W-20 and do it myself and use a Wix filter. Every 5k normal 5.7 not FFV!. To take a chance of oil breakdown when it's 100 degrees outside and your towing who goes 10k? They choose the oil, they choose the filter.

It is in the stealerships best interest to NOT change oil at 3-5k mile intervals. They want your truck to sludge up (which won’t happen until your warranty expires).

Normal driving interval change is 5k.

Shorter interval 3k miles, aka ‘Heavy Service’, is defined as:

    1) Short trips driving.
    2) Tow/Haul/4wd offroading.
    3) Long duration driving in temps over 90°.

    Change your oil yourself.

Dumb question but what is ffv? I do my own oil full synthetic every 5k.

TRD Air Filters, Front door windows tinted to match the rears. Wheel locks, Talons Garage cat shield, Tyger Automotive soft tonneau cover, WeatherTech floor mats with Tuff Skinz Custom Emblem kit, Toyota OEM Emblem Black Out kit. AVS vent covers on all four doors, Red Tundra letters on front bumper & TRD highlighted in Red on front grille. Tailgate Tundra Letters in Black.
The dealership should change oil at every 5,000 miles on your FFV. My local dealer has done it for my FFV Tundra.

It’s part of your 2 year care maintenance program so definitely take the truck back and get what is owed to you.

Your Service Manager should know about all Toyota’s at his dealership. If you still have a problem and can’t get another Toyota dealer get the managers name and contact Toyota directly and Toyota will make it right.

No thank you! Dealer I purchased from offers free lifetime oil changes along with a lifetime engine and power train warranty that covers pretty much everything (guess they assume most people don’t keep their cars for long, I will be the exception to this)The only caveat to this is that all of my service work has to be done by the dealer.

My dealer said oil at 10,000 miles. Bullshit! I always do it at 5,000 with Mobil 1. This is my 4th Toyota.

You're dealership sounds just like mine. Lifetime oil changes. First one at 5000 miles. Is it Fred Anderson Toyota?

    Non-FFV is 10,000
    FFV is 5,000
It’s that simple. If your dealer is to dense to know that I would go to another if possible. If not, show them in black and white.
I second the DIY if you are in a situation to do so.

I do 5k max oil changes as well. I couldn’t imagine taking 0w-20 oil to 10k miles. After even 3k it comes out like water. This stuff is so thin.

It’s suppsed to be thin. The engineers discovered that the thicker oil simply shears which Severely degrades its lubricating properties. They found that thinner oil fills the gaps without shearing in high tolerance engines.

That said I have been running 5-20 in my wife’s Honda for a 100k miles with no issues because it’s hot here and the 5w-20 is usually on sale at Costco!

Being an engineer doesn’t make you smart. I’ve met more engineers that lack common sense than I care to remember.
I’m sure Toyota has done their homework and they are confident vehicles can go 10,000 miles between changes. However, I would bet some of it is motivated by the free oil changes and some is pressure from lobbyists etc about oil consumption.
I go every 5 but that’s because I own a FFV and Toyota requires it and even if they didn’t I more than likely wouldn’t go much past 6,000. Everyone has to decide what they are comfortable with.

You can say that about people in any profession, doctors, pilots, etc. and people trust them with their lives. I'm glad oil change intervals aren't determined by common sense. Best thing to do is have an oil analysis done and the facts will speak for themselves for most people, but whether they want to believe it or not is another thing. No problem with changing oil sooner if someone prefers, I personally do between 5-7k on my non-FFV and all of my vehicles have lasted a long time. I agree with you it really depends on each persons own driving conditions and preferences, but modern synthetic engine oil can go 10k no problem.

I am an engineer. I do exactly what is in the owner's manual. They know more that me about this application and for me to assume my "comfort" factor or think my dad, neighbor or mechanic knows more than Toyota on this subject is ludicrous. To think that accountants, oil companies, dealers or even planned obsolescence control the oil change frequency is asinine unless you have incontrovertible proof. Especially knowing that, if the schedule is followed, this truck will go half a million miles.

Oh wait, the "it doesn't hurt anything" argument is illogical and silly too. That's like saying, "My chrome still looks fine but I will get it re-chromed because it doesn't hurt anything.

I truly don't care if people change their oil every hundred miles if they want to do so. Just don't come and try to justify it with myths and heresay.

Did I hit a nerve Mr. engineer? I don’t recall giving you any myths, heresay, poppy told me or my neighbor swears by.
If I did please post up.
And are you speaking of the same engineers that for years can’t figure out how to improve the sealant on the cam tower? Yes, all true geniuses.

Ironic that all car engineers magically discovered that thinner oil is better around the same time that federal mpg standards tightened up.

Engineers are people too. They make the best decisions with the resources available at the time. Not the perfect decision everytime.
