Not a bad idea. Not at all!

I absolutely love my Ko-Ken nutgrip sockets. They really work quite well. Not cheap, but some of the best money I’ve ever spent. They’re all I use, except for when using the impact.

It only hit 70° here today. Feels great though. Low 90's and triple digits moving in starting Thursday.

Screenshot_20260310_164654_Weather.jpg We have got another cold snap headed our way (only at night) and I'm all for it.
It's been in the 70's and 90% humidity at night lately. About to drop back into the high 40's and mid 50's starting Wednesday. I can't wait. Last night I was sweating my ass off and will be again tonight.

I always liked April in Texas. 70s during the day and night or close to it.

@The Black Mamba recommended it to me, and it worked like a champ, super easy to setup. DO NOT buy on scAmazon. And note: When I just hit their website, it tossed up a "get $20 off", which would bring the price down to $49.

Our yard in Maine is greenish again. Hardly any snow left. Backyard has a bit more. But I think there's a couple inches in the forecast.

What winter? It was 50 degrees the entire time! We had one massive freeze and that was it.

The fact we didn't get one this year.

At least y'all had a freeze. We had like one night that was 25°, and it came long after the rain was gone. So the mosquitoes never got killed off. :(

Hey guys so I think I settled on making myself some rock sliders for my birthday. Sorry @JakeJake - I wish I could afford yours but I'm short on money and long on time at the moment. Mainly I just want the step function for both doors and the front part of the bed. I'll probably use 1/8" steel for all of it. I feel pretty good about the fab part of the job, but I'm struggling with ideas on what finish to use. I definitely want some grip, at least at the step areas, so I don't really want to do slick glossy product.

I've looked at herculiner - reviews aren't great on longevity. Raptor liner - seems like an investment in sprayer and such to do it right.

I've also thought about just doing a gloss rustoleum rattle can, then using Gorilla tread tape at the step areas. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gorilla-...LEmI0AXxQLVgXLarKVhIpBjF9qqkJY1RoC-voQAvD_BwE

Thoughts? Trying to avoid having to spend the money taking this to a paint shop even though I know that's the best option.

I wouldnt take it to a paint shop. They are gonna get used and abused over time and its pretty easy to touch them up as needed. And for cost and ease, I would just go with some sort of tread tape like you mentioned and be done with it. Sliders ive had in the past with a "step" didnt have any extra grip on them and it wasnt that slippery anyways.

Step plates on top of non-angled sliders are game-changers, mine can act as full running boards. Don't take armor to a paint shop or worry about powder coating. Like @oscardog86 mentioned, they'll be used and abused and touching them up isn't much work and part of the game. I think grip tape looks tacky. I recently cleaned all the scuffs and surface rust on mine and rattle canned it black, I bought some of this stuff I'm going to try on the top plates for grip:

Whats the best way to remove rungs from a ladder? Think i’m about to replace my toppers metal frame with ladder bits and bolt everything down.
    IMG_2688.jpg

Might have a blade for an oscillating tool that’ll let me cut em flush on the inside.

Steel-it is the shit. It applies easy, and has a nice finish. not quite flat and not quite satin. I'd run skateboard grip for the areas you want some traction.

I'd do a relief cut, then bend the rails downward, releasing the rung.

I can sit here and throw words at you all day long, and I still don't think it'd make sense.

The best tl;dr I can possibly offer, in one sentence format: It felt like overwhelmingly like "home", the property is virtually everything we've always wanted, and this realization and the house/land popped up at a time when we are really sick of being in an increasingly-overcrowded city, full of idiots.

Living with two extra months of cold temps, I have no doubt, will be greatly worth the California summers versus this hot swamp-ass that's gotten increasingly worse over the last couple decades. Weather is getting wildly more variable/radical, temps are escalating everywhere (yet somehow global warming is a "hoax"), and that's managed to make a lot of places up north far more habitable.

nyet. The rails are the prize. Not gonna hurt to leave the ‘bungs’. Might be able to use those to fit the bushings. Give roxanne a bit of jiggle.

Then cut the outer compression sleeve (and maybe the step tube) and collapse the step tube to free it from the sleeve. Comfirm the vertical will move away from the rail, repeat the process he whole way up the rail, and separate it.

Shit. If i cant find another aluminum ladder, maybe i’ll just run angle aluminum on the other side. 3” or whatever.

A stout shelf might help heaps. Not ready to drill the bedrails, but might move up to 8 clamps.

Awesome - thanks for all the input guys

@JakeJake - I'm gonna look into the steel-it, since you do this stuff all day. Man - I wish I could come visit the shop and have you help me bend some pipe, but getting away from the family and driving up there is a big commitment. I think I'm gonna do the notch and bend and reweld technique.

We did all our vacations to Massachusetts and Maine when I was a kid. Cape Cod and Bar Harbor mostly. It's beautiful up there. Not sure I'd survive the cold, but I see the draw for sure.
