Nah, Sid said he wanted to recycle it all so we just chucked em in the corner.

So i know the Serra sale is on, trying to see if OEM is reasonable. Maybe it's just me, but I get lost in there easy, I even punched in my VIN.
I can get to figuring out what THEY call the part, but I still have problems. And I'll have to find all the plug seals, bolt gromets etc...
Plus this "fitment not available at this time" does not help this retard.

Looking for some Toyota input, just not of the Tundra type. My grandparents got a 2020 or 2021 (gotta confirm year) highlander last year. They got it with about 44k on it and it's now at 64,9xx.

I drove it yesterday and I heard the noise my grandmother was telling me she was hearing, it sounds like if you had a supercharger but the sound changed based on wheel speed instead of engine speed. It happens from about 25mph to 55 (though you can always hear it if you really listen) If you let off the throttle it goes away completely.

I didn't think too much of it but I figured I could do some internet research and come to a conclusion. Unfortunately the conclusion I came to is that a bearing in the transmission goes out and requires full transmission replacement to fix.

Its just 4900 miles out of warranty of course so hoping maybe toyota will still repair but it seems unlikely. There is a TSB for this but it doesn’t extend past the normal warranty period. (TSB LINK)

The dealership they bought from allegedly included some sort of extended warranty but unsure if that will cover or not as I'm not sure the details.

A call to Toyota corporate may be in order depending how things go. Haven't taken it in yet or anything just running everyone through the situation to see if anyone has dealt with anything similar. I got them in a Toyota for the reliability and of course this is how it goes.

If you let off the throttle and it goes away, it's not wheel speed related, but perhaps driveline speed related? Can rule out engine pulleys, belts and the like if it is not engine speed related. That leaves you with transmission output or differential perhaps? I would try to better isolate the noise to get a better idea of where it originates. Only makes the noise when driving correct? May need to be on jackstands or a lift to have the vehicle stationary, but in gear with wheels moving to pin it down. Superchargers whine, so I'm assuming a higher pitched gear whining sound?

Read on in my post, I know exactly what the issue seems to be just from doing some reading online. I can link some stuff. I googled "2021 highlander whining sound while accelerating" and found quite a few cases on it. Seems like a relatively common issue that I wish I had read about before-hand.

    https://www.torquenews.com/1084/my-...w-transmission-and-now-65k-theres-new-problem

    https://www.toyotanation.com/thread...-issues-which-year-highlander-to-buy.1787635/

Stuff makes me feel like I'm the guy that didn’t read about Tundra's having rusty frames and I just bought a rusty frame example.

Can call Serra and give them the VIN and they can provide the part #s.

Think this is what what fit on 2003 AC 4.7L:

Cylinder Head Cover Gasket Right Hand
    Part Number: 11213-0F010

Cylinder Head Cover Gasket Left Hand
    Part Number: 11214-0F010

    Spark Plug Tube Gasket
    Part Number: 11193-50010

Got this since it is cheaper and includes bolt and washer:
    90080-10330 Bolt (with washer)
    instead of this: 90210-07011 Washers

    Fipg Oil Pan
    Part Number: 00295-00103
    (different than trans FIPG)

    Also got this:

    Ventilation Valve Sub-Assembly
    Part Number: 12204-50030
(PCV Valve - screws in so no grommet)

IIRC total cost in April 2024 with 25% off was about $89 ($70 if don't include the FIPG and PCV).

There's a link in the master sticky thread to the @shifty`post on parts and process that is helpful:

Weird. My computer doesn’t always load the full message sometimes, and I haven’t figured out why. Refreshing usually makes it load all content. But sometimes pictures, or a whole second half of text just doesn’t populate on first click. Anywho, that stinks about the transmission bearing, which was one of my suspicions based on symptoms. Hopefully some pleading to the dealer or Toyota will be gracious enough to repair under warranty as it is a known issue with a TSB. Has she reported the noise previously to a dealer?

It just started in the last 1000 or so miles. My grandfather just ended up in a nursing home so there's been a lot of change lately. Was thinking the highlander would be one thing to count on.

It’s funny for a large company to require people to goto work on Friday but everyone works from home. Must be because 80% of the workforce has it off being a 9/80 Friday.

    What's a 9/80 Friday?

You mean companies still let people work from home?

My brother only works work from home jobs, and I think he wonders why he keeps getting laid off.

9/80 is where you work 9 hours Monday- Thursday for 2 weeks and use that extra 8 hours to take every other Friday off. A lot of companies are doing it. We’ve been doing it for over 15 years.

Small update: took it to the local dealer, they did confirm it is the TSB transmission issue. They are going to try and get Toyota to cover, if it isn't covered it would be around $7500. That's a hell of a bill for a 4 year old Toyota. Should have known to stay away from the covid built units.

Gotcha. Yeah, nothing like that at my job. They wouldn't allow it. If you have to work over, then it sucks to be you. Can't work extra on certain days to leave early another. They say comp time doesn't exist.

They were contacting me on my days off telling me stuff needed to be done, so I'd drop whatever I was doing, remote in, and take care of whatever it was. I finally got them to stop doing that though so now my days off are actually days off.

For the record, I'm a software developer.

So if you have a family emergency and have to leave early, you have to use your PTO/vacation time instead of working late another day to compensate? That sucks.

Correct, but worse than that was I was regularly working from home 3 to 4 hours on my days off without getting that time back.

Sys admin here, I understand your pain. I've been lucky and usually had unofficial comp time for after hours work, especially all nighters. Still I'm all too familiar with doing the 8 hour shift with a couple hours padded on before and after being in the office.

Damn. You should look into the world of contracting if you haven’t already. Get paid for every hour worked and usually at a much higher rate in lieu of company provided benefits (so long as the contracting company has a decent health plan to offer you).
