Hello all. I am looking to buy some new tires and wheels and I am at a cross road between 17" and 18" wheels. I want 295s or 33s and gonna put on a 2.5-3" level kit on. Is there any real difference on wheel size besides the size and a little more price for the 18s? Just wanted some opinions.

Lil more meat for the sidewall on a 17". but be careful what you're getting. It's tough to clear the brake calipers with a 17" wheel. I've heard of some that had 18" wheels that didn't clear the brake caliper. Just verify it will fit/clear. I personally like the 17" rock warrior wheels with 35s or even 37s. If i could find a nice set close to me, I'd get them and put the 35s on them with my 6" lift going on later. Some say more tire options with 17's, but there are so many options now with 18s(and 20s as well) now for tires.

I want a set of method grid mr309 titanium wheels. I have seen these on a few tundras and think they look pretty nice.

Yeah I agree. I am not a huge fan of too many aftermarket wheels but these I do like.

That is a nice looking truck my friend. What lift size is that? I am only gonna do a 3 inch leveling right now. And I like the more side wall look, plus if you're out on trails/off roading more tire is better. I am leaning more to the 17" I think.

I have 18 x 9's and had to grind some excess metal on the calipers to get them to clear. That is on a '19 Platinum. Not sure if the rotors/calipers are different thru trim packs. They were 18mm offset wheels.

I have the same size wheels and off set. Didn’t have to do any of that on my ‘19 platinum.

Could just be the wheel design. You run spacers?

Im a fan of the 17's. I like a little more tire personally. The brake caliper issue is real tho. When they balance your tires, they will have to be careful not to stack weights or anything otherwise they will rub and fall off.

As soon as the tires on my 20' wear out, I'm going to get a set of 17 Icon rebounds with a 285/70 BFG ko2's. Can't wait, my impatient ass will probably buy before my current tires wear out.

I never was a fan of the popular trend of bigger wheels and lower profile tires, but I’m getting older and more set in my ways. I noticed the TRD Pro that ran the stock class at the Baja 1000 didn’t use the 18” wheels that should’ve came with it stock. Instead, it used a set of the 17” Rock Warrior wheels to run 37s. The more sidewall, the better when going off-road in my opinion.

Having said that, I fully recognize the Tundra’s off-road limitations with its heavy weight and long wheelbase. I don’t intend to do any technical trails or rock crawling, much less any desert races with mine. But I do like the slightly added assurance more sidewall has with 17s even on relatively easy trails.

But the main thing that convinced me was my cheapskate nature, more specifically the lower cost of 17” tires. I don’t know what prices are like now, but when I was looking, a set of 4 285/75/17s were $400 cheaper than a comparably sized set of 285/70/18s (33.8” vs 33.7”). After selling my old set of 18s, I’ll come out even with the cost of 17” Icon Rebounds when it’s time to replace the same size tires again, unless prices change or I decide to go a size up.

Thats a great point man. Dont think I will be running any desert anytime soon either. I too an looking at the Icon Rebounds or Six Speeds. I will also likely go with the 17 in wheel set, but my only concern is what people have been talking about with the weight stacking/getting knocked off by the caliper. I usually purchase the "lifetime tire balance" at Firestone bc after using twice, its more than paid for itself.

Nothing to be concerned about because it's as simple as saying, "don't stack the weights and place them closer to the edge of the rim". Wasn't too terribly hard on me just then and im not even out of breath from doing so! :):D

Nice! Thats kinda what I figured. I do live in the South. Things get done a little different around here, ha! Appreciate you.

Do you have any experience with either of the Icon wheels, Rebounds or Six Speeds? Know anyone with them in terms of issues?
